Mercenary Pariahs

Mercenary-for-hire corporation Blackwater Worldwide isn't feeling the love from the San Diego.

Via TBOGG, I see that Blackwater can't find love anywhere in Southern California:

San Diego officials will challenge Blackwater Worldwide's permit for an indoor military training facility in South County, saying the public didn't know about the plan.

“Residents deserve to know when a facility like this is approved – before it is approved,” San Diego City Council President Scott Peters said.

The North Carolina company received a permit in March for a training site in Otay Mesa, an industrial section of south San Diego, shortly after abandoning its controversial proposal to build a larger facility in Potrero in East County.

The city Development Services Department granted the permit without public hearings. The site was already permitted for a vocational school, and city staff members decided Blackwater's training of Navy personnel qualified. The facility will have a shooting range, a simulated Navy ship and classrooms.

Brian Bonfiglio, a Blackwater vice president, said the opposition seems to originate from anti-war sentiment, not animosity toward the facility itself.

If that's so, then we are seeing a major sea change. San Diego is a super military town. If it's gone "anti-war" then you can pretty much guarantee that it's over for the pro Iraq crowd.

I don't know if it's actually true that San Diego is anti-war, but I think it's pretty clear that just about everybody is anti-Blackwater. This is an unAmerican company made up of war profiteers who have no loyalty to anyone but their own bottom line. The soldiers fighting over in Iraq on their third and fourth tours for peanuts certainly aren't crazy about the preening jackasses who make their job more dangerous.

These mercenary "security" companies do not adhere to American law and they don't answer to the American government. They are a very dangerous step toward a privatized military that answers to no one but its owners. The problem is that the rest of the world will hold Americans responsible for what they do and we will all pay the price.

it was made clear to me by my C.O., that mercenary work was illeagle... of course that was during the Clinton admin.

I'm extremely curious as to when the laws changed.

Paul Bremer gave them carte blanche in Iraq

and I guess they figure they are given the same considerations here in this country. Bremer is the one who gave them immunity in Iraq, told them they were not under military jurisdiction, nor Iraqi jurisdiction, but that they were immune from any prosecution, answerable to no one - they could do what they wanted to do without fear of any consequences whatsoever.

It was a great victory when Potrero told them "NO!" they couldn't build their "training facility" at the old chicken farm they bought there. Now San Diego. Blackwater thinks that because they have been able to run around, up until now, with impugnity, answering to no one, they can always get away with it. Glad to see the people of Southern California are giving these mercenaries a reality check! Somebody needs to.

How long do you think it will be before Cheneybush steps in and threatens those California politicians with God-knows-what and Blackwater gets what they want? Not long, because he's a lameduck and wants to do as much mischief as possible before he's out of office.

It ought to be clear by now, even to the lame-brain, that he's not going to get the precious legacy he believes is his entitlement. So, to exact revenge on us ungrateful grassroot Americans, he'll do as much damage to us as he can. Blackwater will just be the start of it. Nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah.

Any state that has is short of money, has open space and a poor, rural, Deer-hunting-with-Jesus mentality to inhabit it.

I totally agree with your post! I am "awake", as you say, to the fact that we DO NOT need Blackwater or any other military employed by our government other than our own Army, Navy etc. These people are thugs who have supported the unlawful actions of our current president who is a war criminal!

Down with Blackwater

As an active member of the "Stop Blackwater" movement which successfully defeated its attempt in Potrero Ca. and who is now opposing its incursion into Otay, I'm pleased to see comments in opposition to Blackwater anywhere.

These mercenary groups have been allowed to grow without the scrutiny of the areas they've infected. I hope, with articles like this one, the citizens will realize the danger these mercenary groups pose to a free nation.

As to the legality of an armed bunch of civilians running around the countryside, no one, that I know of, has ever made the case for the legality of private military armies in the United States. It is my contention that their very existence could be contested in court.
