Americans Life Expectancy Goes Down

Posted by Brad , Sadly, No! at 10:13 AM on April 25, 2008.

If we have the "best health care system in the world", why are people dying needlessly?

I’m so glad America provides the best health care in the world:

For the first time since the Spanish influenza of 1918, life expectancy is falling for a significant number of American women.

In nearly 1,000 counties that together are home to about 12 percent of the nation’s women, life expectancy is now shorter than it was in the early 1980s, according to a study published today.

The downward trend is evident in places in the Deep South, Appalachia, the lower Midwest and in one county in Maine. It is not limited to one race or ethnicity but it is more common in rural and low-income areas. The most dramatic change occurred in two areas in southwestern Virginia (Radford City and Pulaski County), where women’s life expectancy has decreased by more than five years since 1983.

But hey, Hillary Clinton is a closeted lesbian with a scary laugh and Barack Obama is a stealth Muslim who can’t bowl, so there’s no way they can fix this stuff.

More:

The phenomenon appears to be not only new but distinctly American.

“If you look in Western Europe, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, we don’t see this,” Murray said.

Yeah, but I bet people in those dumb countries don’t have as many iPods as we do.

The next time some wingnut says to us, “What, do ya want socialized medicine like they got in YURP???” everything in this country should answer “Hells yes we do!” Because after another eight or so years of Bushian policies, we’re going to officially become a third-world nation.

Bush Does NOT care about Americans

MILLIONS of Americans are dying on a regular basis because of lack of health-insurance.
But King Bush says there is a line he will not cross, when he vetoed expanding SCHIP.

Hey, the president is "just keepin' us safe", I guess.

While you're cherry picking, here's a quote from the author. You know, the guy who contributed something to the public besides conjecture and yellow journalism:

"This is a story about smoking, blood pressure and obesity," said Majid Ezzati, of the Harvard Initiative for Global Health, a co-author of the paper.

Not that the conclusions by the study's author's should have any undue influence when teh bogger has a bone to pick with the little redneck who whispers in his ear* about everything that's wrong with...oh, yeah: "Yurp".

Clever.

Is it dishonest to take a slice of scientific research, run with your agenda, and imply that factors you've just spun--on the spot--out of whole cloth are the explanation?

By god, I blame the I.D. movement; our bogger is probably a victim.

*I'd make an appointment to get that checked out. T'aint nachural, partner.

Best health care?

Anyone who think the USA has the best health care in the world is sadly mistaken.

We have one of the WORST systems, but the public relations machine keeps people fooled.

We're dying because obviously we DON'T have a good health care system. It's good for the insurance companies, but terrible for everyone else.

that not only has our life expectancy taken a dive, we are also now the shortest people of any modern industrialized country.

We used to be tallest. And height is a determining factor in the overall health of a nation's people.

And it's only just begun... the bad news will keep on coming. National Health Care is the only solution to what ails this country.

What's the fuss here about healthcare

Isn't that what we vote for year on year, 'cap'itilization. Any capitalist know what that means, it means you allow others to screw others on your behalf so you won't feel so bad when you get screwed. Grandma, thanks for hitting the nail on the head, but I fear you got one thing wrong. We already have national wealth oop's I meant health care. You got dough you can get anything you want. But you sure are right about the dog and pony show we get for PR, finest equipment in the world, but not for your ordinary Joe jane or baby schmoe. We also have the worst healthcare for kids, and we have not even touched Ed. Something stinky in someone's idea of paradise.
