Make McCain Condemn Country Music

Posted by Roy Edroso, Alicublog at 4:23 AM on April 25, 2008.

If Obama is responsible for the nefarious "rappers", then why isn't John McCain responsible for country music?

I predicted they'd go after Obama for Richard Pryor. They're getting closer. After a detour -- Malcolm X? Blogger, please! -- Human Events' Evan Gahr goes after "Obama's Other Jeremiah Wrights," namely Ludacris and Jay-Z. After tittilating Human Events readers with some expurgated lyrics, Gahr says:

Obama thus far has equivocated on rappers. He has criticized their language, but adamantly refused to denounce the whole sordid genre as the unique cultural problem that it is.
Suppose we apply this root-and-branch approach to country music. From the old murder ballads through the works of modern-era superstars, we can see a normative attitude toward drink, drugs, and violence against women. Many country songs promote alcoholism, loyalty to anti-social homies, and brawling. Even the female stars are getting in on the act, a sure sign of social breakdown.

Yet John McCain has failed to denounce country music. Maybe Gahr can persuade him to appear in an appropriate venue -- Gilley's, perhaps -- for a Sister Souljah moment. I would advise him to bring plenty of chicken wire.

...what with Url in desperate need of being shuffled off the mortal coil

But seriously, Knoxville Girl, adopted from an Old English ballad? Maybe we should get all the candidates to denounce Beowulf, what with the blatant promotion of dismemberment, rationalization of violence against mothers, and none-to-discrete use of hallucinogens--Beowulf drowned while swimming toward what he only THOUGHT was a dragon. ;)

On an equally important note, I nominate someone to find out beyond a shadow of d doubt whether the American Flag lapel pins many candidates wear was made in China.

I swear, the issues that some people pick demonstrate their own...issues.

Now why would the Right-Wingers be picking on Obama about rap?
Hmmmm... Why not pick on Obama about classical music? Maybe the Wingers should chastise Obama over the fact that Obama has yet to denounce punk rock.
Oh, I get it. It is because Obama is (half) African American, isn't it?
Naahhhh. It can't be THAT reason. Wingers aren't cocerned about RACE, or anything, are they? Geesh, now I've heard all.

...and, while there are instances of great musicianship and clear, positive lyrical imagery, and notwithstanding the fact there are GREAT people out there who DIG Country music; the NEW country (since Arbitron started actually COUNTING C&W record sales in the 90's and discovered a GIANT market) DOES encourage antisocial behavior in many ways, from the fascination with giant/fast/wasteful machinery, to blind, violent, patriotism, to a certain female singers' rant on jealous, violent destructive rage at a bad relationship (instead of just walking away).

There have been rumors of CIA participation in the Country Music scene for a while, too. Makes perfect sense if you want keep recruits for the Empire's Army coming in. If you read Kipling and history, you can see that the cannon fodder for the British Empire came from the working classes...the "Tommy Atkinses". We DID learn our craft from the Brits.

Keeps white, blue collar people divided (easier for Capitalists to exploit), and keeps people buying cheap junk (more exploitation), and too busy working to think. An old story updated for America NOW.

Sometimes I wonder if those old underground racist singles by "Johhny Reb" will surface during this election campaign, perhaps in a diluted form in New Country. Wouldn't put it past McCain OR Hillary to stoop low...

The idea that Obama should in some way be responsible for Rap music's more repellent elements, or the only candidate required to denounce them, is blatantly racist in nature.

It would be equally ridiculous to nail McCain for Country's dark side (which I understand is the writer's point). Unfortunately, it's that lizard brain that this appeals to, the same brain that so many rely on in their daily navigation through life.

Most Americans are never exposed to the most radical, racist music that falls under the genre of "Country", but they get a glimpse of Rap's every time some blinged out ride with tinted glass and a trunk full of sub-woofer pulls up next to them at a stop light.

I don't know which would make more sense, banning public exposure of bad Rap, or facilitating the exposure of the worst elements of underground Country. Maybe someone could organize a "music" festival (ala Woodstock) where only the worst of both worlds are displayed. I'd like the pay per view rights on that puppy. It'd make the WWF look like a kindergarten milk and cookie brak.
