Sell-out "Bush Dog" Dems Roll Over, Play Dead

Posted by Booman, Booman Tribune at 3:52 PM on April 10, 2008.

It's worth noting who voted how in the latest attempt to check the White House.

Nancy Pelosi pulls a fast one on the Bush administration.

The House adopted a rules change Thursday that freezes the Colombia free trade agreement by waiving a requirement that Congress act on it within 90 days. The rule passed mostly along party lines by a vote of 224-195 with one lawmaker voting present.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Congress and the White House must first enact policies to help the faltering U.S. economy before approving the Colombia pact. "We should certainly do more for our economy before we pass another trade agreement," she said in remarks on the House floor.

Pelosi just changed the Fast Track trade authority rules in the House so that she is under no obligation to put the Colombia trade bill on the calendar. She has many motivations for doing this, but here's one of them:

...Democrats have argued that President Bush broke years of precedent by submitting the trade agreement to Congress without first receiving approval from House and Senate leaders...

...Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.), chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, said President Bush "forgot" to consult with his panel before crafting the proposed deal with Colombia. "Let's give the House more time to facilitate an atmosphere to allow the members [to] know what's in the bill," he said.

It's instructive to look at the ten Democrats that voted against Pelosi:

    Melissa Bean (IL)

    Dan Boren (OK)

    Allen Boyd (FL)

    Jim Cooper (TN)

    Robert 'Bud' Cramer (AL)

    Henry Cuellar (TX)

    Baron Hill (IN)

    Nick Lampson (TX)

    Tim Mahoney (FL)

    Jim Matheson (UT)

    John Tanner (TN) voted present.

Every one of these Democrats, excepting Tim Mahoney, is a Bush Dog Democrat, meaning that they voted in May 2007 for supplemental war funding with no strings attached and that they voted in August 2007 to give the president unprecedented warrantless wiretapping abilities. Mahoney escaped a designation as a Bush Dog despite capitulating on the war funding because he opposed the NSA power grab.

It's not clear why the same group of Democrats would be pro-war, pro-Soviet style domestic surveillance, and pro-free trade, but there you have it. Any way you slice it, these are terrible representatives. Rep. Cramer is retiring, and most can argue that they represent conservative districts, but I think it's worth a phone call to these folks to ask them why they can't support the Speaker and why they continue to vote like Bush's lapdogs.

I don't know much about most of these Reps, but Melissa Bean is a democrat representing an extremely republican-leaning district in Illinois. So, the question is, is she selling out her party? Or is she simply voting her constituency? Again, I can't comment at all on the other nine, but it does get to the question about what these people's jobs are supposed to be. Are they supposed to represent their party or their people? Bean chose to go with her constituency. Does that mean she's a coward concerned about her own reelection? Or does that mean she's doing her job? I don't have an answer to that question, but it's not as open-and-shut as Booman implies here. She has divided loyalties, as she's supposed to given her district.

Send $9 to Gretchen Clearwater to help her unseat Baron Hill in Indiana's 9th!

Bush dog democrats must go. Voter registrations are up dramatically in Indiana due to the presidential primary. Progressive candidates need your help to get their message out.

Bush and The Republican fascist party loves and wants to help anyone that murders trade union representatives..

At this rate that would mean more union reps. will be killed this year over last year..

Over 600 workers and farmers have also been murdered by the Columbian governments death squads..!

Columbia's human rights record stinks..so does Bush's which is why he belongs at the Olympic inauguration with the other murdering tyrants..

Also the positive effect of this deal for our economy is being much over blown by the Republican fascist party..!

Democratic Divide

At this time, there is a division in the Dem Party between the New Democratic Party of the Clinton administration, and traditional progressive Democrats. I think anyone who follows politics is aware that the "Clintonian" Democrats work very much in unity with the Republican Party. We'll sometimes hear some "token grumbling", but they carefully ensure that the worst of the reactionary Republican policies are enacted, whining to the public that there was simply nothing they could do to stop it. This has happened time after time. As a party, they take good care NOT to obstruct the right-wing agenda.
