Contrary to General Petraeus's testimony, members of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) attest that the major destabilizing force in Iraq is the ongoing U.S. occupation. What's more, U.S. troops are being commanded to perform acts that directly violate their moral codes and the rules of war, making a positive outcome exceedingly difficult to achieve.

Less than one month ago, over 100 veterans and active-duty soldiers who served in Iraq and Afghanistan shared their eyewitness accounts of the occupations at Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan. Their testimony illustrated how the ongoing occupation of Iraq is resulting in the dehumanization and abuse of the Iraqi people, the destabilization and breakdown of the U.S. military, and the emotional and physical injury and damage to thousands of U.S. troops. Testifiers gave firsthand accounts of being ordered to raid the homes of innocent Iraqis, physically and psychologically abuse Iraqi prisoners, and indiscriminately shoot at civilians.

"Petraeus continues to repeat the administration's talking points while ignoring what the soldiers on the ground know: the Iraq occupation is not working," said Kelly Dougherty, a former Military Police Sergeant in Iraq and Executive Director of IVAW.

Why doesn't anyone challenge him on implying Iran is a threat?

The last time I checked, Iran hasn't invaded any other country in centuries. Why does anyone believe they would invade Iraq? Hasn't the US demonstrated what a bad idea that it?

Most ridiculous piece of television I've seen this year.

As I stated in another post yesterday, the Dems were embarrassing yesterday during the hearing. They were completely uninformed about Iraq, about the facts on the ground, about everything. (The Republics were worse, but we have come to expect that of them. They are only interested in towing the party line. They didn't disappoint.) And it showed in the questions they asked. With very few exceptions, the questions were overly simplistic and ones that played into the propaganda Petraeus and Crocker wanted to give. It was a dog-and-pony show. It was appalling.

How is it that we that frequent this site are better informed about the facts surrounding Iraq than our elected Senators? What a sad commentary on the state of our government.

Petraeus and Crocker left Capitol Hill with exactly what they wanted... moving the goalposts yet again until the "magic" month of September. At which time they will "re-evaluate." The same old shit. They could have saved themselves a trip and just played the tapes from last year! Nothing's changed.

TV news and congressional hearings on the war are much like their counterparts on TV, the soap operas.

Neither are factual. Neither are real. Both fool much of the public.

Lights! Camera! Action!

Thank you Rep. David Scott (D) GA...

I've been watching the "Dog-and-Pony Show" in the House this afternoon, and I must send kudos to Rep. David Scott (D) GA.

In his time allotted to question Gen. Petraeus, he made some statements that needed to be heard. He spoke of the "elephant in the room" that the Gen. and this administration would love to "gloss over" and that is the physical and mental toll this war is taking on our service members. He talked of visiting the hospital in Germany where the US wounded in Iraq are treated, and the grave misjustice being done to these wounded and returning vets. He talked about the fact that they don't get the care and attention they need. He talked about the toll on the families. He talked about the fact that our military cannot sustain these numbers. He talked about the fact that over 20,000 men and women serving in Iraq are on their 4th deployments! He talked about the fact that no one in the Department of Defense, or in this administration, wants to discuss the HUMAN TOLL when they talk about the war. It's only mentioned in numbers. Not human lives.

For any of you who are represented by David Scott, you should be proud that he stood up for the ones that we are asking to do all the sacrificing in this debacle. He spoke for those who would otherwise have no voice, yet who are making all the sacrifice in this war.

Glad someone said it.

What every Iraqi knows

Acutally, while the U.S. is the worst thing that could ever hapen to Iraq, Iran is quite the best. Iraq's re-unification with it's parent nation would boost its economy ( almost over night)as well as re-establish its educational and professional foothold. Few Iraqis would oppose such a move.
