Air America talker Randi Rhodes, a longtime hero of mine, has flipped from rabid Hillary Clinton supporter to even more rabid Clinton-basher in recent months. The network has suspended her because, as shown in the clip above, she called Hillary Clinton a "fucking whore" at a private, non-Air America event in San Francisco on March 22.

What the clip shows, more than anything, is that news people should avoid attempting stand-up comedy. Which is not to say she didn't have the crowd laughing as she called Geraldine Ferraro a whore; Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Dick Cheney racists and anti-Semites; and then dropped a combo f-bomb/'ho-bomb on Hillary.

Here's the official statement from Air America:

New York - Air America has suspended on-air host Randi Rhodes for making inappropriate statements about prominent figures, including Senator Hillary Clinton, at a recent public appearance on behalf of Air America in San Francisco which was sponsored by an Air America affiliate station.

"Air America encourages strong opinions about public affairs but does not condone such abusive, ad hominem language by our Hosts," said chair Charlie Kireker.

Obama supporters see a conspiracy:

Brian Maloney questions the timing: "Consider this: the incident occurred two full weeks ago, on 22 March. What explains the delay in her removal? Certainly, there wasn't a public controversy to deal with, almost no one not in attendance that night even knew about it." He notes that Kireker is a Clinton supporter and that Rhodes has made even more outrageous statements about the likes of Mitt Romney without repercussions.

Rhodes has suggested the suspension is a breach of contract, and says her employers have "damaged my hard won excellent reputation in the broadcast industry."

This is why liberals are no better than conservatives.

Forget about the right to say whatever a person wants to, if its not politically correct, suspend or fire them....

Is it really shocking and news when someone calls a politician a whore? Aren't they pretty much all whores?

I used to listen to Randi until I came to realize that the most important thing to her seemed to be her own ego. She is rude to people who don't agree with her, and she is rude to people who agree with her. I believe she is just as much a jerk as many of the people she attacks. After a while you come to see that it's all about Randi, Randi, Randi

Randi Rhodes is a very funny lady, and in a stand-up situation, she can be raunchy as hell. But that is a different situation from her program on Air America Radio. She would never use that kind of language on the air, I'm sure of it. On the air, she has always done her homework, tells the truth, and makes beautiful sense. And she can really give it back to the neocons when they call in. She's fearless in the way that all too few progressives are bold enough to be. I still think she's terrific. And as for Hillary, she's out of control and saying anything these days. Just making stuff up. "Whoring" sort of says it about her, no?

I love Randi and I hadn't realized that the incident was a couple of weeks ago . This certainly seems odd .
I remember Randi earlier seeming to be more impartial in the Clinton VRS Obama campaign but I think she became more and more disenchanted with Hillary as Clinton became more strident . The of Surrogate Ferraro to raise the issue of race and the none too subtle references to Rev Wright all spoke of
a scorched earth policy . It certianly appears
that she would prefer McCain to win if SHE can't . The other day someone actually suggested that she might pull a Lieberman and run as an Independent . I am not sure I agree and YET ?
Actually at one point I was considering voting for her over Obama but not so now . He has shown coolness underfire and more importantly seems capable of creating an entirely NEW dynamic in politics by drawing in many heretofore uninterested voters and his use of the internet for fundraising may be a way to free us from the corrosive influence of big money backers . All that being said were she to get the Nomination I would vote for her OVER McCain for the simple reason that the Country can NOT afford a third Bush term . WE must take steps to stop our slide into oblivian
We must stop the borrow and spend Republicans whose solution to all problems is CUT TAXES especially on the WELL to do and Businesses and whose ultimate goal is to NOT tax any money earned from Money . We can bail the greedy wealthy out as in Bear Stearns rescue
but we can NOT ask THEM to help pay for the bail out NOR can we RESTRAIN the business of Business

EVEN IF Hillary Clinton is not a fucking whore, what Randi said was INFINITELY less offensive that what Right Wing talkers say EVERY DAY and ON THE AIR.
Why aren't THEY suspended????

Another four or more years of Clinton does not appeal to me either. BUT we must move ahead and get rid of this corrupt, dishonest administration and stop committing vebal suicide.

We have a statesman in the wings, Obama is his name.

I was apalled when I read that someone let alone a woman would use such venom to speak about a candidate for president.

Perhaps Ms.Rhoades is unaware of her own history as a woman. Has she ever seen Ironjawed Angels? My own grandmother was one of those women who marched in the streets to gain the right to vote. She was jeered and probably called names similar to the language used by Rhoades, the words came from men who were trying to keep us all barefoot and pregnant, who wanted to keep us in our place, who felt that we should be seen, preferably in the kitchen, and not heard.

I don't know how old she is but I remember being one of those women who felt why is it that the only opportunities for women were teaching, nursing and secretaries?

The young women today seem unaware that when women with the abilities of Senator Clinton became a lawyer many while hired by law firms were religated to the position of clerk or secretary, making the coffee.

Without women like Hillary and others Ms Rhoades would not have the opportunities she has today! Wake up young women one of the roads that we have been going down has divided us. Many woman don't understand that when we deminish each other you deminish all of us.

And that's exactly where the males, many of whom are republicans, want us. The line will become see we told you so.

We should all be standing together encouraging Hillary on!, not because she's a woman but because she is one of the most qualified candidates today.

There are too many politicans who if they don't get credit for the idea don't support it. They need to build their base of power. They need to be seen as "the one". Many of them have been members of the most exclusive boys club in the world too long. They are more interested in themselves and evening old scores than they are in making real change for American people.

Perhaps one of the reasons the firing of Rhoades took so long is that it seems perfectly acceptable to beat up on a woman even by another woman. Of course it is not acceptable, no should it be, to be racist even against a woman, ie Imus. The real question is why is Hillary hating fair fighting?

Perhaps because the Republicans have been doing for so long. Why do the Republicans hate Hillary?, Perhaps because the assistance she provided on the House Judiciary committee in laying the groundwork for the impeachment for Richard Nixon! The case was so strong that it resulted in the resignation of a President because he knew he was doomed! And the Republicans have been dividing this country into us and them ever since!

To those young women who say "She should have left him!" Well she might well have but we were raised in a different time, we have raised you differently. We have raised you to be anything you challenge yourself to be and provided you with the legal means to insure your opportunities! Your Welcome.

Also I remember a post-presidential interview with Pres. Bill Clinton. He stated that Hillary might have left him but when the Congress drew up impeachment papers Hillary knew there were NO grounds for impeachment. Perhaps some of you understand the Mother-bear syndrome I'll yell at my child NOT you! Remember they have spent a lifetime as public partners in service to America, why should she walk away from that and probably someone has loved for a very long time. Remember don't judge someone till you've walked in their shoes.

Making change is more than words, without action good ideas and fancy speeches are just fancy flights of thought.

The problem was the WØRD Randi used... & the temerity to have used it about a woman who... truly IS worried about "the black man breaking into HER WhiteHouse. (Thank you, Stephanie Miller, et al.!)

HOW FREAKING PRECIOUS ARE AMERICAN POLITICAL CANDIDATES??
seriously.

Does AAR reserve the right to APPROVE COMEDY SCRIPTS for their on-air talent appearances??

F*CK - the movie that dare not speak its name: A documentary on the expletive's origin, why it offends some people so deeply, and what can be gained from its use.

I was reading The Kitchen Readings while I was in Cuba last month... there is an amusing commentary in it about how HARD it was to manage HST into a video interview & how... he DOESN'T feature in a documentary talking about the McGovern Campaign... but DID make it into *this* documentary...

ON ANOTHER NOTE: at the time of the AAR announcement...
there was only ONE YouTube copy of Randi's event... but WAIT A MINUTE... what an INTERESTING User Account... that's just brand, spanking new, isn't it???
Certainly the account holder has a lot of videos, but ...
to a suspicious mind, the account was very recently opened & smells like an opportunistic hit-job...

The REAL reason they fired Randi Rhodes is...
Posted by: Quannah on Apr 4, 2008 9:18 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
the fact that the owner of Air America, Mark Green, is a HUGE Hillary supporter. He's been on MSNBC quite often lately defending Hillary and slamming Obama. He's a partisan.

That is the reason.

Randi Rhodes has a good show on Air America, and Mark Green has eviscerated what used to be a great leftist radio network. What happened to Sam Seder? The Young Turks? Chuck D? Seems Mr. Green only wants certain people on his airwaves, and it doesn't include anyone who's opinions differ from his own.

Rachel Maddow... better watch your back! You could be next!

"...she called Hillary Clinton a "fucking whore" at a private, non-Air America event in San Francisco on March 22..."

and then...

"...Air America has suspended on-air host Randi Rhodes for making inappropriate statements... at a recent public appearance on behalf of Air America in San Francisco which was sponsored by an Air America affiliate station..."

So, which was it? Was it a gig for Air America or not? It doesn't much matter to me be. Just would be nice to know which one it is.

I USE TO LISTEN TO RANDI RHODES DAILY ON AIR AMERICA. ABOUT TWO MONTHS AGO SHE STARTED TO GO OFF THE DEEP END. HER HATRED FOR HILLARY IS BASED OUT OF JEALOUSY.
SHE WAS STARTING TO SOUND LIKE BILL OREILLY. SCREAMING AT CALLERS WHO LIKED HILLARY AND THEN JUST CUTTING THEM OFF THE AIR.
HER CALLING THE FORMER FIST LADY A WHORE IS EQUIVALENT TO REFERRING TO OBAMA WITH THE N WORD.
I HOPE AIR AMERICA FIRES HER ASS.

I totally agree with what Air America did with Randy Rhodes except they should go one further and FIRE her completely. I am for FREEDOM OF SPEECH, but Ms. Rhodes has gone way past the line. Over the past few months I could not believe some of the VILE things that come out of that women's mouth on 1310 AM on my radio. It finally got to a point that when she was on I would quickly switch the radio channel because I could not stand to listen to her rantings. She would just go on and on and on--especially about Hilary Clinton. I know Hillary has faults, but so does Obama. We have just scratched the surface with Obama and all of his inter tangles in the Chicago area. I just want everyone to picture in their mind and do a good mental picture -- Reverend Wright giving his G-Damn America Sermons in the Rose Garden, and William Ayers & Family living in the Lincoln Bedroom, and Razko after his trial in Chicago roaming the halls of the White House. He would probably try to sell the land the White House sits on. America has only seen the tip of the iceberg with Obama and I am really afraid of what is under the tip that would not come out until it is to late. All I can say is WAKE UP AMERICA Obama is the Pied Piper and leading us RATS to the Ocean. At least with the Clinton's -- we know all about them. I just think Hillary is a real fighter and will fight for every American, and she will not go down easily. Anyway -- back to Randy Rhodes -- She should not be on the Air at all. Everyone I talk to that listens to Air America has told me the same thing -- they change the channel when she is on. Also some of my friends have said they have completely stopped listening to Air America because of Ms. Rhodes. The women makes your ears want to fall off. Air America do not give in -- dumping her will get many of your loyal listeners back. Ken from Michigan

...you are talking about.

If Hillary is NOT selling her body for money to the highest bidder, then Rhodes is out of line.

If Rhodes is talking about the fact that 89% of Clinton's money is coming from Wall Street, then, albeit a crude way to put it, there is truth to what Rhodes says.

Of course Obama gets 67% of his money from Wall Street.

So, it is just a matter of who is the bigger whore for the corporate fascists.

It never seems to amaze me how freedom of speech is becoming harder to find. If Rhodes said this on her program that would be one thing, but while doing a bad comedy skit that she needed notes for is another. Where does her right to say what she wants start (even if badly)? In a private conversation? At home, alone in her shower?

The right wing can spew all the bile they want with no repercussions...oh f%&k it you know the drill.

I have to admit, I was a little concerned with Randi's egotistical ways lately, but much more importantly someone HAS to start telling the ugly, non-PC truth, and all of it. How did we ever allow them to dumb us down to the degree that science and facts are blown off in favor of sound bites and hate speech? After the fascist process of candidate distillation, we are left with 2 corporate rockstars and a weak Ronald Reagan impersonator. Every candidate who dared speak the truth and challenge the power elite is gone baby, gone. Please, Randi, go team up on the same network that Mike Malloy is with and start interviewing some leaders from Architects and Engineers for 9-11 Truth, Pilots for 9-11 Truth, Veterans for 9-11 Truth, Paul Craig Roberts, David Ray Griffin and many more true patiots. You can use Griffin's latest book "9-11 Contradictions, An Open Letter to Congress and the Press" as a guide for your discussions. It contains no conspiracy theories, only factual contradictions within the Bush regime's official conspiracy theory taken from mainstream press reports since 9-11-2001. And it's shocking.

If liberals want to see REAL change in America, let's just pry the heavy lid off of the issue of 9-11 truth and we'll get justice you never thought possible. Cheney and all neocons need to be behind bars forever, this is the issue to put them there and they are scared witless.
