Lou Dobbs Almost Calls Condi Rice a "Cotton Picker"

Woohoo! Lou "fear of the Brown Menace" Dobbs unleashed a torrent of spittle about race -- and he doesn't like the fact that Condi Rice brought it up either (join the Freepi, Lou!). You see, Lou doesn't see a problem with race relations in this country -- he feels the problem people have talking about it is the fault of those "cotton-picking" people. Watch the video to your right.

"The reality is, this is the most socially, ethnically, religiously, racially diverse society on the face of the earth," Dobbs said. "Now, Wolf, we don't make enough of that in the national media. We listen to some idiot say you can't talk about race."

Then Dobbs tripped over his words, as he declared, "Not a single one of these cotton...[stammering]...these just ridiculous politicians should be the moderator on the issue of race."

As Josh Marshall said:

As someone who's done some TV I certainly know that all sorts of things can come out of your mouth when you're ad-libbing. But in this case, when Lou Dobbs is railing against African-Americans like Condi Rice and Barack Obama for having the temerity to say that race is still an issue in America and the first adjective that pops into his head to describe them is "cotton-pickin'", we think it deserves a little tweak.

Digg!

big deal. he was at least culturally sensitive enough to catch himself before he did say anything that might be seized upon (think the use of the word 'typical' by obama) as a sign of his racism, although this article would suggest otherwise.

pfft! loaded words. that's quite telling about our history in this country.

.....despicable's.

I've lost my temper at our current politicians, I'm also guilty of calling them names.

I started with Jackasses, but then realized that was partisan hackery. I've since settled on "Congresscritters" and "Asshats in DC-Land".

No offense to any group that might--in a real or perceived fashion--feel that their particular skin pigment deposition represents a demographic that is more or less likely to go to a tattoo artist and demand a butt-topper be stenciled in above your plumber's business.

Dobbs has a barely concealed, condescending attitude toward black people and toward women. Last week, he was interviewing Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy (who is a black female) about the Detroit mayor case. Worthy came across as direct, tough and fair, just like prosecutors are supposed to be. Dobbs seemed astounded that a female prosecutor, especially a black one, could be that competent. In so many words, that's what he said. Later, he wondered whether the mayor and his girlfriend/co-defendant (both of whom are black) would be able to find a jury willing to convict them in (largely black) Detroit. To her credit, Worthy looked at Dobbs like he was merely a fool rather than a bigot.

I'm not for being overly politically correct...but really, using "cotton (pickin)", in this context...is very close to the N-word. There's no mistaking what he was going to say, and biting his tongue just proves how close under his white skin his racist attitudes lurk, when he's not scripted. Is he a typical white person? Pretty intense if it is. As for Condi's comments, I was surprised and impressed with her analogy to birth defect.

Wait a cotton pickin' minute

Its disingenuous to say that he was going to call Condi a "cotton picker". It is clear that he was not trying to demean her or Obama as lowly slaves.

The reason he caught himself is that he had the sudden realization that if he used this particular "harmless" phrase in this particular context. it would pull back the skin of his argument by revealing that. YES we still have language that we consider "harmless" that refers back to our history as a racist/slave owning nation; and used thoughtlessly, has the power to be truly offensive.

These are not the burdens of a colorblind nation.

That while he seems to think everything fine this comment would have come off as really racist, weather he intended or not.

This points to the fact that the thing he is angrily denying: that there is still lots of scars of our racist past. And vindicates those whom he was denouncing: primarily the recent comments of Rice and Obama.

It was a beautiful moment actually, like his mouth, refused to accommodate the incongruous angry/feel-good crap he was sputtering. Even his own body doesn't want believe it.

It's interesting to note that Lou Dobb's wife's maiden name was none other than SEGURA, for God's sake! His KIDS therefore have Hispanic heritage. (You married her, Lou: Therefore you should keep your mouth SHUT! You look ridiculous and you're embarrassing her and your unfortunate kids!)

This guy is clearly a NUTJOB. If I were Mrs. Dobbs, he'd be living in a 1970's era PINTO at this point!

Dobbs, something you wanted to say?

Was there something on Dobb's mind? Was he about to say cotton ball? No. Cotton swab? No. Cotton candy? No. I give up, what the hell was he going to say? At least he thought it over as he was just about to say, Cotton Club? No, that wasn't it either. Damn. Do we have race problems in this country, yes. Do we have to work on them, yes and we have to work on them hard to realize there is one race, the human race. Openness and knowledge and education of cultures and people are the way to start so open the damn door and walk through and leave the closed mind behind. Cotton ball, oh wait, I said that already.

Seems like the new strategy for dealing with racism is to deny it exists and then call anyone who talks about it a racist. Not only Dobbs but many who comment on this site.

It doesn't come to your mind if you don't already have a penchant for it. when was the last time, especially if one is emotionally involved, does a brand new phrase come to one's mind? not hardly ever.

Obama has brought us all back 40 years!
More anger will come from all this! Our world had progress, proof is Iowa!!! But now he had to try and divert everthing to race when it was really about hate! He has brought out Anger that was dying and now has reserected. How Sad! How Horrible!!!
No excuses no one should call people names but this has not happen for years..but no Obama had to bring that Race Card by supporting the Hatred Wright vomited towards America and all will let loose, Whites Against Blacks the country in a turmoil! My God we had laid all this to rest as best as possible. We were prgressing, blacks, whites, asians, latinos, working together, friendships and now we are going back 40 years...Obama will bring us despair!
