Bush: Iraq's Resurging Violence "a Very Positive Moment"

It's hard to see what Bush sees as positive.

Violence continues across southern Iraq today, as radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr is threatening to end his crucial cease-fire by calling for the “downfall of the U.S.-backed government.”

In response, the administration has gone on a desperate PR blitz to label renewed violence in Iraq as “byproduct of the success of the surge.” “It's "what critics have wanted to see," said White House Press Secretary Dana Perino, calling it a struggle led by Iraqi security forces.

Today — as rockets rain down on the Green Zone and two American soldiers died — Bush cast the activity as a “very positive moment” in an interview with the Times of U.K.:

[Bush] backed the Iraqi Government's decision to “respond forcefully” to the spiralling violence by "criminal elements" and Shia extremists in Basra. "It was a very positive moment in the development of a sovereign nation that is willing to take on elements that believe they are beyond the law," the President said.

It's hard to see what Bush sees as positive. The explosion that burst an oil pipeline in Basra today? Tens of thousands of Shiite protesters in Baghad? A kidnapped “civilian spokesman for the Baghdad security operation?”

In reality, the violence is undoing the very goals of Bush’s surge. Iraqi forces aren’t trying to restore “the law,” as Bush thinks, but are trying to do the opposite — suppress its political enemies before the October elections, historian Reidar Vissar noted. Most ironically, if U.S.-backed efforts “succeed,” Iran's hand in Iraq will be strengthened. IPS’ Gareth Porter explains:

The Badr Organisation and the ISCI had always been and remained the most pro-Iranian political-military forces in Iraq, having been established, trained and funded by the [Iranian Revolutionary Guard] from Shiite exiles in Iran during the Iran-Iraq war.

Bush’s comments are reminiscent of former White House Press Secretary Tony Snow’s remarks last June, casting skyrocketing violence across Iraq as “things moving towards success…signs of success.”

UPDATE: Bush today: “It also shows the progress the Iraqi security forces have made during the surge.”

because it gives BushCo some imagined justification for never pulling our troops out of Iraq. The administration never designed an exit strategy because they never intended for us to leave.

A by-product of the so-called successful reduction of violence, by the surge, is a renewed increase in violence. Is anyone else as friggin confused as me??????? That's kind of like saying that a successful reduction in crime has a by-product of creating more crime.

what metrics can be applied for this president, never mind the Iraq Aggression (I use the term 'aggression' deliberately because I don't want for a moment to forget that the United States, my country, provoked this mess).

I mean, failure is success in that sure the violence in Iraq has fallen, but what he has neglected to mention is that tends to happen when a certain level of homogeneity is reach in various neighborhoods. Also when certain factions are–essentially–brought off, peace results.

Oh, but what a curious and perilous peace it is, as the mortar attacks on the Green Zone and continuing civilian and military deaths illustrate.

Our economy is essentially sound, President Gas says, yet home foreclosures are through the roof (the very same roofs that are no longer over many people's heads, that is) and Bear Stearns (an prime motivator of this mortgage mess) is being brought at firesale prices.

But things are so dandy that most of us are going to get rebates of $300 or so.

I don't necessarily think that Naomi Klein was thinking about the Bush Administration in particular when she wrote The Shock Doctrine, but it curiously seems to embody everything negative in her book.

For months now there has been much talk and many threats from the current administration about bombing IRAN. Like any government that is so openly threatened with attack you can bet IRAN has been preparing to respond to such an eventuality. The normal response is, of course, retaliation.

If the U.S. bombs, IRAN will want to kill any and all Americans it can find. Where are the closest ones? Right across the border in IRAQ. The IRANian armed forces and every IRANian who can carry a pitchfork will come screaming across the border with the singular intent of killing Americans. Whatnis the size of the IRANian army, 500 thousand strong, maybe more?

Simultaneously, every U.S.-hating IRAQi (Mahdi army, Baathists, civilians who have had a family member killed or beaten by American soldiers, terrorist, nationalists, etc.) will see this as THE opportunity to get rid of the invading infidels. They will crawl out from every rock and out of every spider hole and toilet with guns blazing. Our 130 thousand troops will have the IRANians invading from one side and tens of thousands of IRAQis in our midst fighting us, placing our forces in a militarily untenable position.

Conventional weapons may not be capable of stopping the onslaught quickly enough to prevent our troops from being overrun. If that’s the case, tactical nukes will be used. If we use nukes the Bolshevics and Chi-Coms will know the U.S. is crazy and a danger to them and may attack us. If this plays out, the world will be back to square one. Let’s hope the next time we are smarter.

Alternatively, to preempt such a self defeating scenario AND open the way for an attack on IRAN, we take out the Mahdi militia first.

that the surge is a success. Can someone tell me why the media is not criticizing Bush for lying?? Oh yeah, that's right, the mainstream media is the fourth branch of government and probably the most consverative branch outside the executive.

"Iraqi forces aren’t trying to restore “the law,” as Bush thinks, but are trying to do the opposite — suppress its political enemies before the October elections...."

The only surprise in this statement is the assumption that Bush actually believes his own BS. I am constantly amazed that even Bush's most vocal critics have an underlying assumption that Bush doesn't know what he's doing.

"...[Bush] backed the Iraqi Government's decision to “respond forcefully” to the spiralling violence by "criminal elements" and Shia extremists in Basra..."

Bush didn't "back" anything... Bush ORDERED it to be done! Don't think for one second that this was something the Iraqi government came up with on their own!

The pretext is being set. Bush's next move? Attack Iran.

For Bush to say the Iraqi government needs to "go after those who think they are above the law" is really the pot calling the kettle black. He's the one who thinks he is above the law. The positive thing for him in the Iraq war situation is that it's going exactly as planned. War is great to business and allows all his corrupt cronies to make millions from the war. They con't care that people are getting killed in the process. If you agree, then you will want to see the video film "ZEITGEIST MOVIE" which can be found and watched on the web. Part two and pt. three are all about 9/11 and the war as well as manipulation of world money supply be few select corporate elite. Do yourself a favor and be informed and watch "ZEITGEIST MOVIE".

because I am a woman, but where is Laura Bush?

Women, especially wives (if they are smart) of men in the public, try to help their husbands keep from making a fool of themselves and looking stupid and embarrassing the family.

Surely, being a former liberrian, Laura must keep herself informed, to keep her intellect. Otherwise how else she live with George and not go stark raving mad.

In the quitness of the hour, one would think that she could tell George that he comes off looking like a true idiot everytime he opens his mouth in public.

Indict, Imprison. It's time. It's way past time, and if someone doesn't get a handle on the pickled-brained, testosterone-poisoned asshole, who's so far removed from reality he reminds me of Humphrey Bogart in 'The Caine Mutiny', there may be nothing left for us to save. The bully is running the schoolyard, but because his daddy owns the schoolyard, nobody seems to be able to do a thing except sit by and bitch about it by the billions. What can a country do when the bad guys are in control? The only legal thing we have left; Impeach, Indict, Imprison.
