Right Wing Pundits Use Obama Speech as Excuse for Their Most Illogical Racist Rants

How is Obama "pandering to ethnocentric special interests" just by accepting Richardson's endorsement?

It’s always the downside of any major discussion — someone ends up saying something that doesn’t make any sense. In light of Barack Obama’s speech last week on race in America, we’re apparently in the midst of a national conversation of sorts.

I get the sense this is one conversation in which Lou Dobbs deserves to be interrupted.

On the March 21 edition of CNN’s Lou Dobbs Tonight, host Lou Dobbs introduced his program by announcing: “Tonight, Senator [Barack] Obama wins the endorsement of the nation’s only Hispanic governor, Bill Richardson. Is Obama pandering to ethnocentric special interests again? We’ll have complete coverage.” The subsequent report by Capitol Hill reporter Jessica Yellin did not include a discussion of whether Obama is “pandering to ethnocentric special interests.”

Later, during a panel discussion with Washington Post New York bureau chief Keith Richburg, New York Daily News columnist Michael Goodwin, and Democratic superdelegate Robert Zimmerman, Dobbs asked: “Are each endorsement, are we going to hear, as white Americans, as black Americans, as Hispanic-Americans, I mean, is this going to be part of what is the group and identity party in this country? Are — is that not — is it just — I mean, just tell me, is there some sense that the Democratic Party is being overwhelmed by its own sense of group and identity politics here?”

I’ve read the transcript, and watched the clip, and I’m still don’t have the foggiest idea what Dobbs is talking about. Obama is “pandering to ethnocentric special interests” by accepting the endorsement of a governor? I don’t seem to recall Dobbs asking similar questions when Obama was endorsed by, say, Virginia Gov. (and white guy) Tim Kaine.

And why, exactly, would Dems be “overwhelmed by its own sense of group and identity politics”? Because Richardson is a Latino?

I’m afraid I’m a little lost.

For that matter, is it me, or have conservative media personalities been pushing the racial envelope a little more than usual lately? Pat Buchanan’s intolerance was unusually apparent this week in his syndicated column:

…America has been the best country on earth for black folks. It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known.

Wright ought to go down on his knees and thank God he is an American.
Second, no people anywhere has done more to lift up blacks than white Americans. Untold trillions have been spent since the ’60s on welfare, food stamps, rent supplements, Section 8 housing, Pell grants, student loans, legal services, Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credits and poverty programs designed to bring the African-American community into the mainstream. […]
We hear the grievances. Where is the gratitude?

And Rush Limbaugh, predictably, is spewing his nonsense.

“I have a question: I wonder how white college students at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, are feeling these days.
“I wonder if they are nervous walking down the street, and they see a couple of black boys dressed in baggy clothes with their hats on backwards swaggering toward them. I wonder how they feel. I wonder if it makes them fear that they’re going to be shot in the face for their ATM cards and their PIN numbers. Obama, do you think there might be reasons here rather than this being inbred?”

A national conversation on race would be far more encouraging if conservative media personalities had intelligent things to say.

Conservative media personalities and intelligent discussion? That's an oxymoron, with emphasis on the moron, of course.

While it is not true to say that all conservatives are racist, it certainly is true that all racists are conservative.

Why Obama's Speech Was Unconvincing
By Ed Koch

Barack Obama's speech last week addressing his 20-year relationship with his radical pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, was very well done, yet unconvincing.

Obama sought to explain that relationship and why he could not end this close association, despite the minister's hate-filled rhetoric. He said, "There will no doubt be those for whom my statements of condemnation are not enough. Why associate myself with Rev. Wright in the first place, they may ask? Why not join another church?"

Yes, those are the questions that people are asking.

#######

Senator Obama in his speech acknowledged that the rantings of his minister are "inexcusable," but stated, "I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother - a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe."

Before we discuss his grandmother, let's examine the impact of Rev. Wright's statements on the Senator's two daughters. Nothing says it better than a song from the musical "South Pacific," to wit, "You have to be taught to hate and fear...You've got to be carefully taught." Few dispute that Rev. Wright's sermons are filled with hate.

Why didn't Senator Obama stand up in the church and denounce his hateful statements or, at the very least, argue privately with his minister? It was horrifying to see on a video now viewed across America the congregation rise from the pews to applaud their minister's rants.

Now to Obama's grandmother. There was a time spanning the 70's to the mid-90's when many blacks and whites in large American cities expressed the same feelings on street crime held by Obama's grandmother. Indeed, Reverend Jesse Jackson made similar comments in 1993 at a meeting of his organization, Operation Push, devoted to street crime. According to a November 29, 1993, article in the Chicago Sun-Times, he said, "'We must face the No. 1 critical issue of our day. It is youth crime in general and black-on-black crime in particular.' Then Jackson told the audience, 'There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery. Then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved....After all we have been through,' he said. 'Just to think we can't walk down our own streets, how humiliating.'"

Isn't that exactly what Obama's grandmother was referring to? To equate her fears, similar to Jesse Jackson's, with Wright's anti-American, anti-white, anti-Jew, and anti-Israel rantings is despicable coming from a grandson. In today's vernacular, he threw her under the wheels of the bus to keep his presidential campaign rolling.

For shame.

What is it that I and others expected Obama to do? A great leader with conscience and courage would have stood up and faced down anyone who engages in such conduct. I expect a President of the United States to have the strength of character to denounce and disown enemies of America - foreign and domestic -- and yes, even his friends and confidants when they get seriously out of line.

We were seeing the emergence of Obama republicans, similar to the Regean democrats.

There are many, the Clintonites and the Republicans that are very uncomfortable with this.

This would include some of the far left of the democratic party.

Obama has an amazing intellect but beyond that he has, in such a way that people can feel it, a deep respect for all.

He resists efforts to demonize anyone. While all of us have a tendency towards this demonization it is to a large extent a political maneuver and gets in the way of knowing what all of us need to know in order to make better decisions.

It is necessary to call something what it is, it is important to know things, and notice how people have behaved, like the noticing of the Clinton's behavior this election cycle. It is equally necessary to make decsions about what one can support and what one can't, but it is unneccessary to make a demon out of anyone in order to be able to do this. The extrapolation that this is necessary appeals to our weaknesses not our strengths.

The reason for these things is that those who are peddling them know that white america still fears a backlash from black america. We also can be a little uncomfortable with anything that actually gets in the way of our priviledge.

We are ok with equal rights as long as we are relatively sure that african americans are systematically queueing up at the end of the line.

It is astounding to me that Mayor Koch didn't bother to listen to more than just the sound bites of Rev. Wright's sermon before blasting away with his own racism. It is just as surprising that Koch's aging brain has apparently lost the ability to think beyond reactionary and simplistic thought processes and can now only tow the right wing mantra that anyone mature and honest enough to acknowledge any of the ill deeds in America's history must therefore hate America. But then again, Mayor Koch is not known for thinking before expressing his opinion.

Conservatives: Incapable Of Truth Or Reason

America needs a discussion on race relations. But what we DON'T need is for conservative asses to put in their two-cents (which, ironically, is worth MUCH less than two cents) on the issue. Are conservatives capable of saying something that isn't completely racist and just plain wrong and the total opposite of the truth (on ANY issue, not just on race relations)?
I doubt it. I really do.

Obama is the "White Noise" MSM uses to Jam Real News..!

If you don't understand the specifics of ethnic and racial identification in the Democratic party as well as gender then what are you doing writing on a political site..?

Few realize that on our last census there were no less than 126 divisions and sub divisions of American..126..!

Now for some that might be fine and dandy but for me it's crazy stupid wrong and does not seek or act to unite us as a people and nation but only promotes division..

Now this is by no means Obama's fault far from it but while you seek to fault Lou Dobbs for his sensitivity to ethnic division and sub division and it has gotten to the point of sub sub divisions here you are misguided..

Dobbs seeks to see as do many mature somewhat educated Americans to end these divisions and special considerations which divide us and breed resentment..

I know this outside of the activist realm many Americans especially older and more mature Americans feel that there is no one for the to vote for when they consider the issue to Illegal Immigration, not the 2 million per year legal immigrants but the up to 2 to 3 million per year more who enter our nation illegally..!

They can't vote for Obama or Hillary or McCain..they have no voice or representation or hope thereof..in seeing our nations borders and who enters it ever coming under any real control and they see how towns and wages are deteriorating..shrinking or frozen..stagnant at best..

Now I for one am of the school which not only espouses but knows that:

The More We Differentiate, the more We Discriminate..!

That is why the issue of race becoming as Ocham's Razor in this race for the sake of some sort of ideological purification will only further fracture and divide Democrats and act to cause many of those Independents to not vote for Barack Obama..!

the best thing about Obama's candidacy for me at least was that race was not an issue..that's progress that his race was no issue and it truly was not..

I was an Edwards supporter and still know Edwards was our best hope for real change and someone who wanted to take on the corporations much more and Hillary of course, or Obama are willing to do..

When Obama said he wanted Republicans in his Cabinet was when my worst suspicions about him were confirmed..!

He's Bill Clinton..He's a Judas Goat..same as Hillary only worse slicker and allows voters through his vague platitudes to attach they Hopes and Dreams on him he let's those yearning for change real change to project upon him what they need to believe..

I also do not think of Richardson as A "Hispanic" oh there's that Hispanic Richardson, He's Hispanic you Know isn't that amazing a Hispanic can speak intelligently or act so American..what stupidity for me Richardson besides being incredibly accomplished and intelligent likable decent is for me a fellow American why can't we just be Americans..?

Well so I know now his race crap which I am so tired of will never end until the Democrats lose as they are well on their way of doing the election..

I am resenting Obama more everyday the more I hear about him the less I like him I am sick of Obama this Obama that and it's all fluff..

Obama is the "white noise" the media is using to keep the real incredibly important issues real crucial issues and hard news out of the American people's view or consideration...

i wish you had mentioned that mr wright s comments, when taken in the full context of when he spoke them, do not sound nearly as strange or unusual as they do standing alone as the MSM presents them.

I'm am so sick of hearing all those oh so sincere right wing pundits talk about race. You'd think they would have moved past this issue as the Senator addressed it last week. I turned on Fox just to see what those losers had to say and they make me sick. Not a word about the fanatics backing McCain or the mind slip about who Iran is training. Nothing but Reverend Wright all day all night. I couldn't watch for more than a few minutes without fear of losing my mind. Sean Hannity is the biggest toxic bag of gas ever. If he has one fair and balanced bone in his entire body it's news to me. He and everyone of his ilk are a bunch of stupid, uneducated, unintelligent racists. They wouldn't know anything about civil rights or being a good Christian if their very lives depended on it. I think most Americans are tired of the old racist rhetoric coming from the right wingnuts. We are looking for something beyond the stunted groupthink coming from Fox and the rest. The reason Obama has had such an impact on the campaign and on the dialog is because we're ready for it. We want change and hope and Obama, more than any other candidate I can remember voting for, can give us that. I think the right is scared to death of this and that's why they will use all the mean, untruth, racist rhetoric they have in their arsenal to keep the White House. They certainly can't keep it just by backing McCain. I think it's absolutely reprehensible of them to try to destroy the hopes of most Americans by ruining the life or rep of the only person running a truly honest and uplifting campaign. They would have us all feeling hopeless, afraid and adrift. It's the only way the can retain power.

They (right wing conservatives) will keep up this pounding until they convince everyone that Obama is not fit for the presidency. They did it to Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton (with markedly less success), Al Gore, John Kerry, Hillary Clinton - and now it is Obama's turn. We can only hope this time they fail to manipulate Democrats against their own candidate? This despite the God-awful showing of the Republican congress (since 1994) & a Republican President (since 2000). When will our peers wake up to see how they have been manipulated? What more is needed to reveal the bankruptcy of their dogma - that their strategy is class warfare on the upper middle class on down?

A national conversation on race would be far more encouraging if conservative media personalities had intelligent things to say.

Not every issue has two sides. Far too often, the Republican side of an issue is greed so obvious it doesn't have legs with average Americans. So the Cons attack Democratic candidates and issues on the most specious grounds. With slick, expensive ads, they manage to manipulate Americans against their own best interests through repetition and the appearance of class and style in their messages. Our peers are so foolish.

by a racist statement... or series of statements... by Lou Dobbs, whose stock in trade, day in and day out on his moronic program, is all about his racist rants about "illegals"?

He's a professional racist! That's how he earns a living!

What would be TRULY shocking is if he didn't utter racist rants throughout one of his programs.
