I'm all verklempt today over the woes of these people. Will they never get a break? Tucker's dad is going to have to step up the fundraising, or Scooter might have to give up his country club membership!!!

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby was disbarred from practicing law in the nation's capital on Thursday.

The former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney was convicted last year of lying to a grand jury and federal agents probing the leak of the identity of a CIA agent, Valerie Plame Wilson.

"When a member of the Bar is convicted of an offense involving moral turpitude, disbarment is mandatory," the District of Columbia Court of Appeals wrote in its opinion, which is posted on its Web site.

Jane Hamsher @ FiredDogLake:

Kind of seems like some old time military "cashiering ceremony" is in order with a formal parade, where they call the miscreant out and break his sword and force him to leave.

I guess we'll have to settle for future disbarring in New York. Sets a nice precedent.

Update: Court order here (PDF), courtesy AZ Matt.

"When convictions on more than one count are involved, disbarment is mandated if any one of them involves moral turpitude," the court added.

Last July, a court sentenced Libby to a 30-month prison term. President Bush later commuted Libby's sentence, calling it "excessive."

Disbarment is just a slap on the wrist with a big fluffy cotton ball, given what Libby did.

I must say, it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. However being disbarred doesn't mean the criminal won't be practicing law in DC. Cheney would probably still hire him and just say "So What" when questioned about it.

....absolutely no one at 1600 had anything at all to do with such a horrendous thing!! Hmmm, now who could possibly want to cause the murder of an actively under cover Female Agent? Can't think of a soul that might not give a darn about murdering others, unless it's about 1.2MN or 4000 even, anyone?????

Libby has a very fine back account. I doubt that he'll have to relinquish any amenities. And you might recall that his defense was paid for by those of lesser wealth. In ancy case, he will no doubt end up in a very lucrative postition in a think tank (even if he does not demonstrate thinking ability) or some such position of influence.

Maybe someone will step on him with great force. Do you remember that some right Repubs called him a "patriot" at the time. God forbid if this louse has anything to do with the safety of this country. String him up!
