McCain Camp Denies Iran/Al Qaeda Gaffe, But Look at the Video!

Posted by Ali Frick, Think Progress at 5:10 AM on March 19, 2008.

A CNN video shows that McCain repeated the inaccurate claim twice during one press conference, bringing his total number of "misspeaks" to three.
Lieberman Corrects McCain on Iran

Today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said that Iranian operatives are "taking al-Qaeda into Iran, training them and sending them back” — despite the fact that Iran is a Shiite nation and al Qaeda are Sunni fighters. Responding to reports of McCain’s factually inaccurate claim, the McCain campaign released a statement attempting to paint the senator’s fundamental error as an isolated slip of the tongue:

In a press conference today, John McCain misspoke and immediately corrected himself by stating that Iran is in fact supporting radical Islamic extremists in Iraq, not Al Qaeda -- as the transcript shows. Democrats have launched political attacks today because they know the American people have deep concerns about their candidates' judgment and readiness to lead as commander in chief.

The fact that McCain made identical remarks on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show as well makes it clear McCain did not simply “misspeak.” What’s more, McCain corrected himself only after Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) “stepped forward and whispered in the presidential candidate’s ear.”

UPDATE: Fox News aired footage of Lieberman correcting McCain during today’s press conference. It's to your right

Update: A video by CNN shows that McCain repeated the inaccurate claim twice during the same press conference, bringing his total number of "misspeaks" to three.

He's a 72 year old veteran with many health problems who suffered torture whilst a prisoner in Vietnam.
He should be headed for a VA retirement home not the Oval Office.

Where's the Media Coverage of THIS . Well in my paper it was buried in a side column on page 13 .
The sheer Audacity of the McCain camp to claim it was a slip of the tongue and he corrected himself IMMEDIATELY is pointed out quite well in the article showing how he had espoused the same flawed logic on a radio show and ONLY corrected himself AFTER Holy Joe whispered in his ear . Incidentally THEN just WHAT country was he referring to ? It makes NO sense for it to be IRAQ since he spoke of leaving Iraq for training and returning to Iraq . Perhaps he meant our staunch Allies the Saudi's the ones who provided 19 of the 911 hijackers and who recently responded to Bush's request for help on oil prices with a BIG FU OR maybe it is Pakistan another ally which seems incapable of controlling the radical Islamists in the nothern tribal regions AND oh yes murdered the best hope for a democratic Government .
Of course WHAT this revealed is the John McCain does NOT know anything about our enemy . He is totally IGNORANT of the fact that Al queda is Sunni and Iran is Shia and these guys have despised each other for centuries .

McCain's JOB right now is to bolster Bush's claims that Iran is INTERFERING in Iraq, as justification for invading Iran. The plans have been in place for years and Bush keeps trying, like the boats attacking our battleships incident, but he's so desperate his outrageous claims keep being DISCLAIMED. The republicans have ALWAYS used the tactic of repeating a lie until it's such common "knowledge" that millions believe it. In almost every speech McCain makes, he STILL, makes the comment "We're in Iraq BECAUSE THEY ATTACKED US ON 9/11."

we've had to endure with the current "Decider" - remember? Truth doesn't play any part in this. You tell people what you want them to believe, repeat it ad nauseum, the media chimes in with the "new truth", and the people come to believe it.

Just like there was no link with Saddam and Al Qaeda. Just like there were no WMD. Just like there was no plot for Iraq to buy yellowcake uranium from Niger, or aluminum tubes for centrifuges. Tell the people the lie enough times, it somehow morphs into the truth.

McStain = the same old bullshit.

Was McCain's "correction" to say that it's actually islamic extremists that Iran is exporting to Iraq any more accurate. Has he or anyone produced evidence of this?

... he was a war hero. Wait a minute: he got himself shot down, didn't he? Some war hero. Probably spilled his guts under torture, which explains his forgetfulness. Man, what a great presidential candidate he is.

He's practicing the anti-Iran rhetoric. Don't worry, by the time he gets into office, he'll have it down.

Within the next 2 years, the U.S. will be actively bombing and possibly invading Iran - regardless of who's sitting in the oval office. Yes, Obama and Clinton have their eyes on the target, just as much as McCain.

Why? It's quite simple: because Israel feels threatened (even though they have the best trained and supplied military and the largest stock pile of nuclear weapons in the M.E.).

Everything we do in the M.E. is for the oil companies, military industrial complex and Israel - you, me and all U.S. citizens are their punk ass bitches.

Wake the f@#% up sheeple, am I the only one who sees this?!
