Anti-Gay Lawmaker Predicts a Violent Backlash Against Gays Seeking Civil Rights

My, my, these bigots are getting bold. Oregon recently passed legislation that prohibits housing and employment discrimination based on sexual orientation, but there is a repeal effort under way, and one of the three lawmakers leading the charge is State Senator Gary George (sen.garygeorge@state.or.us).

The local LGBT publication Just Out, managed to snare an interview with George, and he had quite a lot to say about the uppity homos. A snippet.

Just Out: What sort of special rights do you feel that the Oregon Equality Act offers?
George: First off, I thought that was a fabrication of definition, in the sense that you gave special rights, it picks out another group, a lifestyle group, and says hmm, you have all these protections. The main thing that bothered us with the whole bill was the fact that here we go again, adding one more class of people that need to have special rights.

Just Out: What if an employee is fired because of his/her sexual orientation or gender identity? Isn't the Oregon Equality Act in place to guard against such discrimination?
George: As an employer, I don't wanna hear about it. This workplace is for work purposes. My advice to the gay community is SHUT UP, just don't talk about it. If you walk around talking about what you do in the bedroom, you should be on the pervert channel.

Just Out: What is your reaction to the recent murders of out gay youth in Florida and California?
George:Obviously murder is murder, there's no excuse for that. Here's what I'm saying, I think we're seeing a backlash, in other words if you push me too hard don't be surprised if I react. Gays will tend to react violently if people are oppressive toward them. If gays are oppressive toward straights, then you'll see a violent backlash. You're going to have a point where these groups develop and say I'm tired of these special privileges.

Jesus. These are truly hateful people. You have to wonder what this man would do if he had a child who didn't' fit gender norms, or was gay/lesbian. This man is justifying the tragic deaths of people because of discomfort some have with extending basic civil rights to a group of taxpaying citizens. This is sick.

As Blender Lee said, "civil but firm messages can be sent to Senator George at sen.garygeorge@state.or.us."

Being Gay, and out, I would pity the frustrated homos that seem to fill the GOP, if they weren't so dead set against the rights of their betters.

By betters, I mean people with a higher capacity for self honesty, integrity, and compassion. Functioning adults with the guts to be who they are and come out.

I had always wondered what the pathetic losers and babies who lack the character to come out were doing with their wasted lives. But now I see they have a special club, a club you can easily join if you possess absolutely no integrity, and want your whole life to be based on transparent lies-

yes, its the GOP- the gayest bunch of guys ever to frequent the rest area bathrooms of our highways and airports. The bravest bunch of draft dodgers ever to cheer for the troops.

Come out, or shut up, you bunch of public restroom loving self loathing perverts. I know that you can't tell homosexuals from child molesters because you yourselves are usually both. Those of you who are not pedaphiles are still so loathesome that you must pay for sex, cause no one would ever give you a blow job just cause they like you. The rest of us don't have to pay, just like that rotter Bill Clinton! Sex without paying? What's that all about?!

Those of us who can deal with the complexities of adult relationships have already come out, and are now free to mix sex and love. What a burn for all the GOP closet perverts. Must be a kind of....hell BWA HA HA!

There are little kids on the playground with more courage. But of course, this is what one expects of an bunch of unrepentant draft dodgers, embezzlers, and criminals.

Chicken shit Cowards!

That men with overt hostility towards homosexuals are usually dealing with repression of their own homosexual desires. This guy is just one more latent example. Oops. Did I say latent? I meant blatant. Freudian slip. Sorry. Nice to know that Larry Craig has tapped someone to follow in his footsteps and take such a wide stance against homosexuality.

I live in Oregon, but not in his district.
We've had more than our share of homophobic nuts. Everytime we defeat some horrid new homophobic proposal, another nutcase opens his mouth and spews more hatred.

You can write to him and express your views. His government comment site is:
http://www.senatorgeorge.com/contact.html

My email to him said:
"It's your government, and it's up to all of us to help preserve our precious freedom!"

This is what your site says. However, from what you said recently about gays & lesbians not deserving equal protection in housing & workplaces - you might want to amend that saying to:
"It's your government (unless you are gay or lesbian), and it's up to all of us to help preserve our precious freedom!(except for those gays who have the audacity to expect equal protections)"

You say: "As an employer, I don't wanna hear about it. This workplace is for work purposes. My advice to the gay community is SHUT UP, just don't talk about it. If you walk around talking about what you do in the bedroom, you should be on the pervert channel."

Are you also going to say to hetrosexual folks - "Just SHUT UP, just don't talk about it"?

Why is it OK for straight people to talk about their relationships, or how "hot" they think their girlfriend or boyfriend is - but not OK for gays to even mention the person they are dating or living with?

As a fellow Oregonian, I am ashamed of your comments.

pfft! If gays are oppressive toward straights, then you'll see a violent backlash.

My Email to Senator George

Senator Gary George,

As an American, I am shocked and offended at the intolerance and bigotry your words in JUST OUT magazine display. I am referring specifically to your justification of the murder of boys in California and Florida because of their sexual orientation. You were quoted as saying:

"Gays will tend to react violently if people are oppressive toward them. If gays are oppressive toward straights, then you'll see a violent backlash. You're going to have a point where these groups develop and say I'm tired of these special privileges."

I don't know how many gay people you know, but several of my friends are gay, and I can attest that none of them have ever acted violently despite the sort of discrimination that they contend with from narrow-minded thinking such as yours.

As a straight man, I am disappointed and dismayed by your attempt to create a simplified Us vs. Them dynamic. People who identify themselves as gay/lesbian/transgender and transsexual are in no means limited to that label, despite your reductionist language, Senator. Like you and me, they are people with multitudinous personalities. Those in your state are your constituents, and they are Americans. Finally, they are human beings.

We all deserve rights to help make our lives worth living. To react against someone who you do not even know on a personal level is foolish, and as an elected leader of your community, it is irresponsible. To react violently towards someone because they are not exactly like you--or to justify those violent actions--is primitive, dangerous, and cowardly.

Please do better.

Sincerely,
James Suffern - Brooklyn

Yeah, I've been suffering terribly from all the gay oppression I've had to deal with. The gays are very sly about it. They oppress me in such a subtle, sinister way that I never even notice it. I experience no actual effects from it, you see. But that doesn't mean it's not there. I'm a ticking time bomb.

No one is innocent of discrimination, including those who are discriminated against.

Lets be honest, male homosexuals typically treat male bisexuals the same way male heterosexuals treat male homosexuals.

If he'd been talking about discrimination against those whose sexual orientation is paedophilia instead of homosexuality many of you would be supporting him and you wouldn't be calling him a bigot but rather a responsible and respected member of the community whose ideas should be enacted into law. In fact, he'd hardly be considered controversial at all.

Bigotry is bigotry, but some forms of bigotry are more in fashion than others.
