McCain Gaffe: It's "Common Knowledge" That Iran Is Training Al-Qaida...Oops

Posted by Ali Frick, Think Progress at 12:06 PM on March 18, 2008.

Considering he had to correct McCain himself, does Lieberman still insist that McCain is "almost always right on the big issues in foreign policy"?

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has spent a majority of his presidential campaign trying to convince voters that he is the most qualified to tackle foreign policy issues:

I would believe that my knowledge and experience and background clearly indicates that if the phone rang in the White House and I was the one to answer it, I would be the one to best address a national security crisis. [3/3/08]
I have the most experience of any presidential candidate when it comes to foreign policy and advancing our national and economic security priorities around the globe. [1/29/08]
On matters of war and peace, I offer Americans my experience, my personal familiarity with the tragedy of war, [and] deep involvement in all of the national security issues of the last two decades… [11/18/07]

Of course, McCain’s supposed prescient understanding of foreign policy has been proven faulty over and over. Today, as the Washington Post’s Cameron Barr and Michael Shear report, McCain further undermined his claim to be the best qualified on matters of foreign policy, when he repeated a mistaken claim that Iran was training al Qaeda fighters:
Speaking to reporters in Amman, the Jordanian capital, McCain said he and two Senate colleagues traveling with him continue to be concerned about Iranian operatives “taking al-Qaeda into Iran, training them and sending them back.”
Pressed to elaborate, McCain said it was “common knowledge and has been reported in the media that al-Qaeda is going back into Iran and receiving training and are coming back into Iraq from Iran, that’s well known. And it’s unfortunate.” A few moments later, Sen. Joseph Lieberman, standing just behind McCain, stepped forward and whispered in the presidential candidate’s ear. McCain then said: “I’m sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not al-Qaeda.”

He made the same assertion on right-wing Hugh Hewitt’s radio show last night.

The “common knowledge” McCain cites is simply false. Far from working together, Iran and al Qaeda represent opposing sides in the Iraq civil war. Al Qaeda is a Sunni Muslim extremist group, while Iran is ruled by Shiites, where they make up 90 percent of the population.

McCain, the so-called foreign policy expert, is confusing reports that Iran was aiding Shiite insurgents in Iraq — one of the groups that virulently opposes al Qaeda. Even some aspects of those reports have been disputed.

Considering he had to correct McCain himself, does Lieberman still insist that McCain is “almost always right on the big issues in foreign policy”?

That's what we want, McCain's hand on the button when he has a senior moment.

"McCain then said: 'I’m sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not al-Qaeda.'"

And your point is? I mean, come on, McCain, you personally funded the Contras (i.e., armed extremists known to violate human rights laws in pursuit of terrorist activities) even as the majority of your colleagues in Congress acted to make doing so illegal. Surely you haven't forgotten. Why, it was not long ago that convicted criminal ollie North endorsed your run for the presidency in part because he recognized your support for what became known as the Iran-Contra scandal.

Pot, kettle, black. . . .

just like that Taliban - al Qaeda - ISI thing...it gets really complicated when western intelligence agencies (esp. MI6 and CIA) start creating "terrorist" organizations and filling the airwaves with propaganda.

Sen. McCain would do well to sit down with Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed and Michel Chossudovsky if he wants to know the true history of terrorism in the middle east and central Asia.

Wouldn't hurt AlterNet if they contacted them, either.

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.

Now it is common knowledge that McCain doesn't know what the hell he is talking about when it comes to the middle east.

Confusing Shiites and Sunnis is like confusing the Catholics and the Protestants in Northern Ireland over the last century. If you don't know aobut that and who stands where in that area, then you don't know what you are talking about and you will be nothing more than just another dangerous buffon.

In a sane world... even in a moderately sane world this would cost McCain the election and all credibility he ever had. This isn't just a minor lapse in memory or clarity. This is a demonstration of a total lack of a grasp of the real dynamics of the region.

I don't trust anyone with our security who doesn't even know who opposes who in the middle east.

Because I just don't know where to start.

Suffice to say that he is the biggest - and most successful - liar in American politics.

How much attention has been paid by the MSM to his vote against outlawing waterboarding recently. Considering how much fawning attention they paid to his "independence," "maverick status," "principles" (He wouldn't know a principle if it bit him in the ass.) and so on, you would think they would cover the biggest sellout of his career. UH UH. Might miss out on the next barbecue at the ranch.

No more mention of his lobbyist whore - most MSM types thought it was unsporting somehow to even mention it - even though it involved actual corruption. Much better to cover Spitzer's hypocrisy - even though it involved no corruption, he stepped down, and McLiar is still running. Convenient timing there.

Even his Rethug colleagues hate him. Why? Is it because he is such a "straight talker?"

No! Because they know he likes to make lots of noise about popular issues they would rather keep quiet like banning torture or not cutting taxes so much for the rich - but he will fall in line in the end and vote just like they do - but will get credit from the press as a "man of the people" anyway. His record (when he bothers to vote) is one of the most conservative - but not one voter in ten actually realizes that.

Here's hoping Obama rubs his face in it.

IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT MCCAIN IS TALKING UP MORE WAR AFTER SIX GODAWFUL YEARS DURING WHICH THIS COUNTRY HAS BEEN BANKRUPTED. DON'T EVEN ASK ABOUT THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE NATION--EVERYTHING IS GOING TO HELL IN A HANDBASKET WHILE THE BUSH-CHENEY REGIME GOES ON WITH ITS BUSINESS AND CHINA ARMS ITSELF TO GET READY FOR THE TAKEOVER. I AM GLAD THAT I'M 77 YEARS OLD AND WON'T BE HERE MUCH LONGER--BUT I'M SORRY FOR MY CHILDREN AND THEIR CHILDREN AND ALL OF THE OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE THAT ARE GOING TO HAVE TO FACE THE FACT THAT THEY ARE LIVING IN A THIRD-WORLD COUNTRY AND THAT THEIR PARENTS' GENERATION ALLOWED THIS TO HAPPEN. BTW--THINK MCCAIN WILL PICK JEB BUSH TO RUN FOR VP?? YAY GOP!!

How many of what stripe make up Al Qaida?

What little I know is that the number of foreign fighters in Iraq' Al Qaida could be as few as 1,500 members. Total fighters could be from 5,000 to 11,000 and the Military veterans say many of these are Iraqi criminal elements.
McCain uses the term Al Qaida as a "be very fearful" GOP reflex word. The fact that he doesn't know that they have a zilch to do with Iran just means he got caught up trying to string his fear words together.
It would still be interesting to know how many of what stripe actually comprise Al Qaida in Iraq.

Lieberman is the new Cheney?

So it seems. Lieberman is following McCain around telling him what the Powers want him to say, and not say.

We've seen this before: Cheney with his secret staff (unnamed) and with unprecedented power for a vice-president needs a successor to carry on the secret agenda in 2009. Why not Lieberman? After Lieberman visited the descending McCain two months ago, McCain's campaign was reborn; he got the word he is the Power's choice (by default).

The secret government continues next year, with McCain or with Obama in the puppet's chair.

These are the words of Thomas A. Nagy

If you really thought this country couldn't do worse than Bush/Cheney & cohorts, try to imagine
a McCain/Leiberman ticket. Leiberman's raison d'etre is to do whatever he can to furthur Israel's interests, and would easily prod McMain's addled brain into launching an Iran confrontation. This is the guy who doesn't know the difference between Sunni and Shiite.
