Conyers: 'If Bush Goes to Iran, He Should Be Impeached'

John Conyers just finshed up a panel with John Cole and Christy Hardin Smith at Take Back America with words that were heartening to everyone made just a wee bit uneasy by the recent retirement of Admiral Fallon and the implications it might have for war with Iran:

"If Bush Goes Into Iran, He Should Be Impeached," said Conyers.

Conyers also said that with regard to FISA, the House was going into conference with the Senate. That the Senate wanted to give retroactive immunity to the telecoms, and that the House is saying "let a judge decide." But he also made the point that it wasn't just the Republicans who were the problem:

"There were about seventeen Democratic senators that bought into that business. We need to straighten them out," he said.

Christy also noted that if the White House said the telecoms did nothing wrong, they certainly issued some indemnification letters -- and that the legal departments at the telecoms would never have signed off without them.

So where are they?

First, after Bush attacks Iran is too late. Bush should be impeached before the damage (even more damage) is done.
Second, I don't for one second think that Bush would be impeached even if he attacks Iran. Sorry, Conyers, but you words and your promises of conditional impeachment, as they always do, ring hollow.

The White House’s propaganda campaign laying the groundwork for military action against Iran now dates back over six years—to Bush’s 2002 State of the Union address in which he designated Iran as a founding member of the “axis of evil.” Since then, this drumbeat has waxed and waned as other concerns and obstacles—including Admiral Fallon's leadership—have often commanded center stage. Now, with the Bush administration well into its final year in office, a renewed push and a shorter fuse should not surprise us. My 3-minute YouTube video entitled “Forewarned Is Forearmed: Bush On Iran” is available HERE. It offers a brief chronicle of the president’s public warmongering and demonization of Iran.

So, you mean John Conyers has finally found a reason to impeach Bush? If we invade Iran? So that's the "line in the sand?"

How utterly pathetic that he has ignored all the other reasons that he should have begun impeachment hearings in January of 2007! Bush has done more than enough already to warrant impeachment! Why this change of heart, when before, he said impeachment was off the table?

This smells of an election year crock to me. I used to have respect for John Conyers. He killed that over a year ago. It's empty rhetoric now. Shame on him for not acting when he had the opportunity.

My opinion is much the same as other posters. Conyers as Claude Rains. Conyers as Righteous Dude. Conyers as Typical Politician Gasbag.

Show me the money baby.

Invading Iran is reason for a revolution, not an impeachment. You had that chance. Go back and hide under Pelosi's skirt.

You want impeachment do as I do. The DNC calls, I say no impeachment, no money. They send contribution letters, I write on them, no impeachment, no money and send them back. If enough people do this they'll impeach righ now. No money is something they understand.

If Bush Goes to Iran, He Should Be Impeached

The qualifying phrase is not necessary! Bush should be impeached. He should be impeached, if for no other reason, to keep him from going into Iran.

I know this comment is redundant but when I read the headline my first thought was that Conyers is the master of the fucking obvious (and that he is about 3years too late).

John Conyers is once again threatening impeachment? Didn't he threaten impeachment last year and the year before and the year before that? He's going to impeach Bush AFTER gas reaches $10.00 a galleon at the pumps because Iran has retaliated by taking out all Persian Gulf oil? After our Air Force and Navy have joined our Army and Marines in being destroyed by our stupid war policies. Does the term TL2 (too little too late) ring a bell? I don't believe Conyers any more and I don't trust the current Congress to do the right thing EVER. Sorry John, you have no longer got any credibility.

I'm an angry Independent who's been waiting for IMPEACHMENT for several years now. The election of November 2006 brought great expectations for FINALLY bringing some justice to Washington and IMPEACHING AND PROSECUTING these LYING THIEVING WARMONGERING GOP BASTARDS that put us in Iraq.

WRONG.

You dems out there have proven to America that you're nothing more than spineless wimps too wrapped up in politics to do the right thing and IMPEACH this IMBECILE in the White House along with ole "5 deferrment" Dick.

SHAME ON YOU DEMS!

if you rape me and then kill me viciously, I am so going to have you arrested and brought up on charges. yeah, gasbag, that strategy ought to work just great. have the Dems all grown allergic to having a spine? how many of them would even follow through if this grave delay in harsh justice actually took place? I fear the eventual outcome would only be a bunch of crowing fools going see he wasn't guilty ever never ever, haw haw. not exactly worth the bother.

We shouldn't rag on John Conyers for his statement about Bush being impeached if he invades Iran. I do agree Bush and Cheney should be impeached NOW, to prevent any more evil deeds and high crimes. But let's take Rep. Conyers' statement as a small step forward -- take that, Ms. Speaker! Maybe from here, he'll become a little more brave. Let's flood him with e-mails and phone calls in support, and ask him to honor Robt Wexler's request for hearings on Cheney. It is up to US to keep pushing all these people -- and thanking them when they do the least little good thing!

open letter to congress

18 March 2008
OPEN LETTER TO CONGRESS
IMPEACH OR ELSE
I hereby pledge that for the rest of my life I shall not vote for any member of the Senate or House of Representatives, Democrat or Republican, for any future public office if they have not taken a public stand for impeachment of the Bush-Cheney gang before these war criminals have left office. All of our elected Representatives and Senators have taken an oath of office that they will defend the Constitution against both foreign and domestic enemies. Under these circumstances, with the crimes committed by this group against our Constitution and crimes against innocent civilians, not to bring impeachment proceeding borders on traitorous action. When our very form of government and our Constitution are under threat, there can be no more important business for the Congress to attend.

The crimes of Bush and Cheney in the abuse of human rights and international crimes of torture, murder, and illegal detainment are well known. They have manipulated our country into a war under false pretenses that has cost thousands of lives, those of our own citizens as well as innocent civilians of other countries. They have alienated our allies by spurning international law. The Republican Party must bear responsibility for the actions of this administration and the Democratic Party has become complicit in these crimes by their continued financial support of the war and their failure to institute impeachment proceedings. All who do not make a stand for our Constitution, that so many brave Americans have given their lives to defend, should be voted out of office as unworthy to serve. If our elected representatives do not act on this critical matter they leave an indelible stain on the American psyche and our reputation among the family of nations that time will not wash away. The Constitution does not say MAY be impeached, but Article II, Section 4 says, “The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States SHALL BE removed from Office on IMPEACHMENT for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors. Therefore, I cannot vote for those who do not uphold their oath of office. Their failure to uphold the Constitution for which they took an oath borders on treason. If any of these people, who have failed to fulfill their duty to protect our Constitution, choose to run for public office again, I shall not vote for them, but will vote for the best qualified independent who pledges to truly represent the people and I encourage others to do the same.
