St Patrick's Parade: Gays, KKK, and Neo Nazis Need Not Apply

Nothings says Happy St. Patrick's Day like telling Gays and Lesbians to step aside, which is why, since 1991, the New York City Saint Patrick's Day Parade has excluded "the gays" from the festivities. But before people get their shamrock-pattern panties all up in bunch, you should find out why having gay-free Gaelic activities is so important.  John T. Dunleavy, Chairman of the New York City Saint Patrick's Day Parade, explained "If an Israeli group wants to march in New York, do you allow neo-Nazis into their parade? If African-Americans are marching in Harlem*, do they have to let the Ku Klux Klan into their parade?"

Now, whatever you think about the gays, you have to admit, Dunleavy is on to something. Because, of course, long before the Nazis eliminated 6 million Israelis**, and the KKK  terrorized thousands of blacks in Jim Crow South, the gays starved one million Irish to death, during the great potato famine, stealing the staple crop, in a sinister plot to make the most fabulous rosemary-infused potato shallot souffle ever.

* Do the African-Americans have to keep their parade within the confines of Harlem? Or do they forfeight their right to a KKK-free rally once they step below 125th street?

** I'm using the Dunleavian interpretation of "Israelis" in which Israelis signifies Jews.

It's always nice to find out that things are not done out of spite. Not everything makes a negative statement. This is the oldest parade in NYC. There are many other ethnic parades and celebrations. Just about everyone is covered. The city does an outstanding job of recogninizing the diversity and allowing people to march and be proud. No need for hard feelings. Thanks, ANNA

"If an Israeli group wants to march in New York, do you allow neo-Nazis into their parade"

The is no "jewish" parade in NYC, thier an Israel day parade, so the statement when understood in context makes sense.

The parade itself is organized by a catholic order, you know the pesky thing called the first amendment that allows freedom of associations (also the reverse, disassociation), additionally, it prevents the city from meddling in the affairs of the church.

No, the city is not endorsing religon here either, as the Parade organizers pay the same fees as everyone else.

Victim #001 of 9/11 was an Irish Catholic *gay* priest. It is completely shameful that the march continues to ban GLBT contingents and then compares gay people to the KKK and Nazis.

From Wiki:
The Rev. Mychal F. Judge, the Fire Department chaplain who died in the rubble of 9/11, was, and still is, one of the most widely loved Roman Catholic priests in New York City's recent history.

Judge was born Robert Emmet Judge in Brooklyn, New York the son of poor Irish Catholic immigrants from county Leitrim.

Upon hearing the news that the World Trade Center had been hit by hijacked jetliners, Judge rushed to the site. He was met by the Mayor of New York, Rudolph Giuliani, who asked Judge to pray for the city and its victims. Judge then rushed to those lying on the streets to administer last rites. Judge then entered the lobby of the World Trade Center north tower, where an emergency services command post was organized. The south tower collapsed and debris filled the north tower lobby, killing many inside, including Judge.
