Wow, this is a telling little light shone into the anxious masculinity that defines the conservative "revolution". (Via.) Apparently, Brett Favre teared up at his retirement press conference, an understandable action considering the high emotions that have to be flying as you end a career as prestigious as his. And Laura Ingraham, who knows her audience very well, decided this was a good opportunity to call Favre a woman.

"All these years, and I didn't know there was a woman quarterback in the NFL."

"Brett Favre...we're watching this in the studio, obviously retiring from the NFL, great quarterback, handsome 38-year-old man, he gets up there and he does this press conference that was frankly one of the most embarrassing things I have ever seen."

"That's a great message for young boys. 'Get up there and act like a girl and start blubbering like a baby."

Then, in her best impersonation of a crying toddler with its favorite toy taken away, she wah-wah-wah's while uttering in a mocking tone, "It's about me, it was never about me, but it is about me, bla, bla, bla" before returning to her regular voice and stating, "I could not believe what I was seeing."

Unfortunately, the reaction from too many sporting outlets has been, essentially, "Nuh-uh! He's earned the right to cry a little without having his masculinity taken from him. And you're not a woman, so there!" Which really isn't probably going to hurt her feelings, because clearly she doesn't think much of women to consider it an insult to call someone a woman.

What the Yahoo sports blogger is buying into is the concept that masculinity is a fragile thing, always in danger of being infected by the feminine and immediately perishing. It's this fear that drives so much of what's fucked up in our culture, from war-mongering to date raping, this sense that masculinity has to constantly be shored up, lest it disappear completely.

From Stephen Ducat's indispensable book on the subject, The Wimp Factor:

It suggests that being biologically male is not sufficient to confer or sustain masculinity. Instead, it must be asserted through repetition, words and actions. The everyday vocabulary and common-sense notions of gender remind us that in the majority of patriarchal cultures, the most important thing about being a man is not being a woman.

As you can see, the idea that masculinity is fragile and has to constantly be shored up is accepted not just Ingraham, but also the sports blogger who offered that Favre had some kind of masculinity bank, and he'd saved up enough to afford this feminine indulgence.

In order to be a successful right wing talk show host, you need to build up enough fear in your audience to keep them tuning in, but you also have to offer hope of some sort, or at least an ego boost, so they get regular rewards as well for tuning in. Considering the masculinity obsession, what this amounts to is telling a non-stop story about how American masculinity is dying under an onslaught of feminist and liberal do-goodery that infects one with the vagina from the inside. Make your listener feel his dick is likely to fall off any minute. Even better, obsess about the dicklessness of young men these days, as if to say to the listener, "You have put up a successful show of masculinity your whole life, but now your son is going to swish around, limping his wrist at people and everyone will know that you weren't really a man all along because your sperm couldn't even make a 'real' man." Sow these fears, but also give the listener reason to feel superior, by telling him that even though America is being "feminized", he's been a tough enough man to continue the hard process of having no real feelings outside of anger, hating women, hating foreigners, etc. If you can strike the right balance between fear-mongering about masculinity and ego-boosting, you'll get your audience.

You can see both how Ingraham is a real pro at this, and how there was no way to pass up picking on Favre. The story is just too easy to fit into the model. You have the story about how the feminine menace is growing all the more powerful, turning even that icon of masculinity Brett Favre into a woman, a real "Invasion of the Body-Snatchers" moment. You have the "your son will grow up queer and then everyone will know you were shooting woman sperm all along moment" with the fear-mongering about how your boys will see Favre cry and decide that they can go just be women.

But the listener is not given complete reason to despair, because the underlying message is a big ego boost. "My god, what a manly man he-man you are! You're even manlier than Brett Favre, because he's up there crying and you're not.* You know that beating Favre in the Manly Olympics is like getting the automatic gold." Of course, you can't hang your man gold on the shelf and call it a day. The Manly Olympics are perverse games, with every day starting brand new, and automatic revoking of your manhood credentials should you ever decide to sit one out. Or that's what they hear. Everyone who plays in the Manly Olympics is to scared to find out what happens if you decide to just quit and find better things to do with your time.**

*Never mind that he's up there and the listener is not. Fantasy manhood is just as good--ask any warblogger who won't dare actually sign up to serve in Iraq. **You're happier and live longer, and your dick is still perfectly serviceable and you can even have more fun with it now that you own it instead of letting it own you.

There are a few reasons to cry

The real problem is a person who doesn't know about sports commenting on a sports figure. It's alright to cry when: you've won/lost the big game; you blew your knee out (effectively ending your career); or when you retire. That's about it.

If Brett Favre had been crying for the million people our country has killed in Iraq, then yes, the radio fans would agree that Favre is a woman. Ironically, it would also make him more qualified for president than any of our current contenders.

This perverted culture is the cause ( or one of the causes) of so much that is wrong in this world:
Religion
Domestic Violence
War
Homophobia
It needs to go away and women need to run things.

what's the difference? I have cried. I also could kick your ass. ask my 2 sons if they think their sister is a "girl". she could always kick the youngest one's ass and came close to kicking my 29 year iraq war veteran's ass on several occasions. she scared both of them. so, get a life

Aren't human beings clever monkeys.

The American education system needs a huge makeover. Forget the emphasis on reading, writing and math skills. Our children need to learn how to live generously, with empathy for all and the kind of personal responsibility that translates one's concerns into carefully considered action. A little training in how to think wouldn't go amiss either.

Our government's actions are all too often spectacularly violent and deadly (what kind of mind was able to dream up "shock and awe"?) and all too often our commentators are cowardly and irresponsible.

That said, let's stop blaming the individuals and examine the fear-based system into which they slot.

Laura Ingram would have been further appalled

had she been paying attention throughout Favre's career here in Wisconsin, she could have scathingly upbraided him other times too. Like when he found out his wife had breast cancer and he was scared to death he may lose her. While that would have given Ms. Ingram lots of chuckles, she could have roared with her inane glee when Favre "played a game for his dad" the day that he died. Of course he had no business getting emotional when his brother-in-law was killed in a tragic accident on Brett's farm, so I agree Brett is a big baby.

Thank heavens the leader of her party is a he-man. Your not going to find him shedding a little tear for the horiffic mistake he made by sending our young men and women to die and be maimed in a senseless, war. Or, by golly, other human tragedies on his watch like the hundreds of thousands of people let down by the handling of Katrina and Rita. If "W" cried everytime he had reason to cry in these last 7+ years, he would be a blubbering mess. Sure glad he's a one tough fellow. Maybe its good to be clueless.

I will have to see if Ms. Ingram's radio program is on any of my Wisconsin stations. I'm afraid I haven't been able to find her and can see now I and the men in my family are missing out.

Favre's tears didn't show that he's a woman, it simply showed that men also cry. I suppose that's something that never occurred to Ingraham, possibly because Ingraham is neither a man nor a woman.

When Brett hung 'em up, he said it was because he's just mentally worn out, tired beyond caring. And I'm sure one of the things that made him that tired of it all, even though he could still play at a remarkably high level, was this kind of discussion. Laura Ingraham couldn't possibly be more boring.

Who cares what Laura Ingraham thinks? She's just another pathetic voice of the right wing sound machine, which has been and continues to be discredited everyday.

Laura deserves a good slap for such a sexist remark but I'd not waste good skin or energy on such an unworthy excuse for a woman.

This is the kind of thing that reinforces the idea that being a woman is "not as good" in our culture as being a man. It's just like saying someone "has balls" as a compliment and calling someone a pussy (or lacks balls) as an insult, calling men "ladies" to make fun of them, showing them being sensitive or "wimpy" in comparison to how "men acting like men" should be, and having people like Huckabee assert that it's god's mandate to have wives obey their husbands.

If someone said that crying made a sports figure seem "like a black person" or any other ethnic or racial epithet, there would be an uproar. But somehow, it's still acceptable in many quarters for femininity to be used as disparagement. It's just as ugly, just as prejudiced, and just as ignorant to insult women as it is to insult any other group.

The cult of masculinity has many facets, but it is likely that many of those who support the "male is better" notions have deep-seated insecurities. Men who are doubtful about their own worth need to feel that "at least" they are better than women. Women, like Ingraham, who buy into it probably also have self image problems and prefer to suck up to the "superior" gender in order to prove their proper allegiance.

It's sad, really. If it were not so essentially destructive, it would be more pathetic than anything else. But as it is, the idea that it's better, more important, or otherwise superior to be masculine than feminine promotes war, violence, and a multitude of ills designed to keep the balance of power right where it is.

... who buy this nonsense from fools like Laura Ingraham. What is the shortest verse in the Bible? "Jesus wept". Find it. It's in the Gospel of John. Oh, let's not forget the Garden of Gethsemane, where he wept while praying. So, now, according to Dr. Laura (who has a nice nude spread on the web, by the way), Jesus is a woman!

Oh, an also, for the Jewish religious -righters, didn't David, "a man after God's own heart" weep at the death of his friend Jonathan and his son Absolom? So, I guess, according to home-wrecker and porn queen, Dr. Laura, David was a woman as well!

Further proof that these so-called religious right folks don't know a damn thing about the book they supposedly believe is the word of God. I left evangelical Christianity BECAUSE I read the Bible... especially the Gospels (which contain those insignificant red words from that weeping woman, Jesus).

the alleged "feminization" of 'Merkuh

Who is Brett Favre?

Every time I hear the claim that America is being feminized, I think 'what do people mean by this phrase?' I'm sure there are some who express this in the most sexist and chauvanistic manner and meaning possible, but I think many people, being essentially 'Merkaan (i.e., "lazy"), really mean "risk averse." How risk aversion gets gendered female is beyond me. Maybe it's just because I hang with risk takers in general, but I have never understood this characterization.

The whole damned idea is just fucking stoopid. We don't need any more 'Merkaans, we need human beings, capable of empathy and engaging risks (without genderizing risk).

A man who cannot cry has no empathy. A male without empathy is a dangerous beast without a soul. A Celtic proverb says, 'never trust a sword to a man who cannot dance.' Similarly, a man who cannot cry is not worthy of anyone's trust.

There is a documentary "Tough Guise" and the caption is maybe "violence and the crisis of masculinity in America? EXCELLENT film. It's very well thought out and really shows the problems with our culture. It puts forth in world culture, men being violent is just the way men are supposed to be and that the only acceptable emotion for men to have is anger. I've never understood why having feeling for other people and some level of vulnerability is scorned instead of being hailed as having humanity.

As an old fan of the packers, I mean way back, Bart Star. I am now lucky enough to live in a saner place across the waters and now I know it for sure. America is sick. As someone who practiced the martial arts for many years I can say with no hesitation the men I practiced with were the gentlest kindest men I have known and if EVER i needed backup it would be from a kind, nice guy. WHY? because they are the toughest. Why does America continue to let wind bags on the media, when it's clear to the vast majority of the world they, well, not only do they not know anything they are exactly why the world is turning against America.

Any athlete, male or female, who has gone through as much hell and exhaltation with the same bunch of friends for so many years understands why Mr. Favre would cry. A team experience is about as close to a true brotherhood as a combat tested military platoon. Anyone who wonders why Mr. Favre would cry obviously has been so self-centered for all their life that they really don't classify as a functional social creature. A person like that needs to run, not walk, to the nearest shrink to get their mind put back together and become a socialized human being, not some sort of emotionally twisted mental midget.

...with genuine emotion. I'm not a Packers fan. I genuinely don't like the Packers. But I love Brett Favre.

Laura Ingraham did what right-wing talk show hosts always do -- say too much about something they know almost nothing about.

Best thing to do with her and all of her ilk is ignore her. Imagine the power all such talk show hosts would have if everybody just ignored them? They would wither away and die. Isn't that what we really want?
