Ferraro Fiasco: the Ex-VP Nominee Claims "They're Attacking Me Because I'm White"

Posted by Pachacutec , Firedoglake at 9:12 AM on March 12, 2008.

Daily Kos has uncovered a quote from 1988 where Ferraro made the same dismissive racial remark about Jesse Jackson.

"Racism works in two different directions. I really think they're attacking me because I'm white. How's that?" -Geraldine Ferraro

There's really not much more to say about this that has not already been said elsewhere, but I just wanted to pile on a bit, as it's gotten beyond disgusting. Ferraro's unrepentant comments are beyond the pale and the Clinton campaign should take serious, serious crap for keeping her on the campaign finance committee. This kind of unreconstructed, race blind idiocy (at best, blatantly ignorant racism at worst) needs to be called out by Senator Clinton, personally, in my view.

OLBERMANN: I can't then, without having you here, let you have an opportunity to vocalize your thoughts on what Howard Fineman was reporting about the comments today, the second set of comments today from Geraldine Ferraro, implying that the Clinton campaign is repudiating her and firing her from its finance committee because it doesn't mind this idea of Barack Obama being an equal opportunity hire being out there, you know, without Senator Clinton's name directly on it.
MADDOW: For anybody to be saying that Barack Obama is only where he is because he is black, that black men are so privileged in America, that that's the only thing that explains his success, because he's otherwise unqualified, which is the implication of her comment, would be absolutely offensive, more than regrettable, from anybody commenting seriously on the campaigning. Honestly, you know it would be.
But for this to come from somebody who's an official part of the campaign, and for the campaign to not disavow that person and distance themselves is--it's an incredible decision and it therefore does make us question whether they are doing it on purpose for some reason.
OLBERMANN: Yes, if we heard this from Robert Novak, if we heard this from Glen Beck, if we heard this from Bill O'Reilly, we'd be appalled. I don't think we'd necessarily hear it from some of them. I'm damming them with faint praise.

Yup.

UPDATE: The Ferraro story has continued on the morning news shows. Ferraro has said she is "absolutely not" sorry for her comments:

"I am sorry that people think this was a racist comment," Ferraro said in an interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer on "Good Morning America."

She continued:

"David Axelrod, his campaign manager, has chose to spin this as a racist comment because everytime anybody makes a comment about race who is white _ he did it with Bill Clinton, he was successful; he did it with (Pennsylvania governor and Clinton supporter) Ed Rendell, he was less successful; and he is certainly not going to be successful with me," Ferraro told CBS' "The Early Show." "He should have called me up ... He knows I'm not racist."

Obama referred to Ferraro's comments as "slice and dice politics" on the Today Show:

"Part of what I think Geraldine Ferraro is doing, and I respect the fact that she was a trailblazer, is to participate in the kind of slice and dice politics that's about race and about gender and about this and that, and that's what Americans are tired of because they recognize that when we divide ourselves in that way we can't solve problems," Obama said on NBC's "Today" show.

Digg!

After McCain is elected president, we will look back on Geraldine Ferraro's comments as the quintessential moment that defined what turned out to be a referendum on racism and feminism in America.

Perhaps former President McCain will make some mention of it in his memoirs.

john edwards was a good-looking/photogenic, charismatic, good speaker with a great message who is a white male. do you see him still in the race? when whites of either pary support a white person primarily because of that person's race, it is considered racist. why isn't it racist for blacks to be supporting obama because he is black? obama's campaign is attempting to have it both ways by relying so heavily on black support but denying that it is about race. as ferraro said, racism goes both ways. having said that, i will vote for obama in the fall if he is the democratic nominee because i believe that either he or clinton is preferable to mccain. i will not respond to partisan attacks implying or stating that i am racist because nothing could be further from the truth. also i will not respond to extreme partisan pro-obama comments because i have said i will support him in the fall if he is the nominee.

She is sacrificing the votes of ANYONE with a brain that is not a racist! They are SO offensive I don't believe they have ANY CLUE just how badly they are shooting themselves in the feet. Seems as if it is getting worse by the day.

Talk about cutting off their nose to spite the face. What goes around comes around, karma, it will come back to bite them and we have to make sure it does!

We have a long time to the convention or the general by most 'ordinary' people's standards. Most of us live breath and bleed politics, 'sane' people DON'T! LOL!

We ABSOLUTELY MUST keep calling the DNC, the leadership of the House and Senate, democratic leaders across the country need to hear from us! and the MEDIA. She is attacking ALL OF US! Any attack against Barack or Michelle is an attack against ALL of us!

MSNBC, ask for the comment line, phone them LOTS: 1-212-664-4444

Democratic National Committee, ask for Howard Dean, phone, phone, phone: 1-202-479-5100

United States Senate, ask for Sen. Pelosi's office: 1-202-224-3121

Senator Pelosi announced she is giving her Super D vote to Barack. She said it is because Clinton endorsed McPAIN's 'lifetime of experience' at Obama's expense but Pelosi got VERY LITTLE press, I heard it ONLY ONCE, fleetingly. Endorsing McPAIN at the expense of the other dem nominee, same reason the dem leadership should toss HillnBill OFF the ticket and OUT of the democratic party!

WOMEN FOR BARACK, YES WE CAN!

Race and Gender

To expect to eliminate consideration of race or gender in this nomination process is indeed the greatest of denials. How we consider them is a reflection of ourselves and experiances. To pretend this is not so is to exclude reality. I will proudly vote for eather Hillary or Obama as I believe others will in the privacy of the voting both. A secreat ballot is an underlying principle of our democracy for this very same reason. I hope people stop feeding the bonfires of the vanities and rejoyce in the fact that we have such good democratic candidates.

Sing it. Reeks of jealousy and white bias contempt. Basketball Legend Isaih Thomas once said the same of Larry Bird (in reverse). Something to the effect of if he was a blackman, he'd not get so much attention. Recall "Whitemen Can't Jump." In Larry's case, he didn't really ever need to break any high jump records. Back to Geraldine. Reminds me of conversations with Geasers...like grandma. Racist comments just slip out. Its weird. You'd think Geraldine would be a little more enlightened, and so would Hillary. But, in the end it is really all about Hillary. Ask her. Hillary at any cost. Decades of humiliation at Bill's side. Doesn't she and Geraldine deserve more. I mean, can you think of it. A black man standing in their way. Geraldine for Hillary's V.P. And we think we have economic problems.

Did Geraldine Ferraro Vote For Shirley, Jesse, Or Al?

Because Obama isn't the first Black to run for president. If she has never voted for a Black presidential candidate are we to assume that no Black has or ever will be qualified to lead? Why don't the talking heads ask her if she voted for Shirley Chisholm, she obviously thinks gender matters. Of course she is racist, because I guarantee she has never found a reason to support or vote for a Black presidential candidate. The problem is no matter how some Whites try to frame it, Blacks have always supported White candidates. My aunt has been in politics all her life. She supported Mondale early during his campaign because they approached her, she told me last night Ferraro didn't engage her, and she didn't care for Ferraro. My aunt was the president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors at the time. As a Black woman my aunt supported a ticket Mondale/Ferraro when there was a Black candidate in the race. I would like to know if Gerry Ferraro can say the same thing?
