California's "Green" Governor's Love Affair with His Private Jet

Sacramento's not such a bad place: The summer heat and lousy air quality are balanced by the outdoor recreational opportunities and an unpretentious, small-town feel. But if you're a international movie star used to the bright lights of Hollywood and you somehow get yourself elected governor of California, surely you can't be expected to actually live there.

The first governor to fit that description, Ronald Reagan, had nothing against Sacramento per se, but Nancy found the historic governor's mansion near the Capitol a dump. The state built a new residence in the suburbs that became a white elephant after Jerry Brown decided he preferred a mattress on the floor of a studio apartment.

Today we have Arnold Schwarzenegger, who at first toyed with the idea of buying a home and moving his family to Sacramento, then took up residence in a hotel penthouse across the street from his office. But he missed his kids in Brentwood, and he already had a private jet at his disposal, so of late he's been flying home at night and back in the morning. It's a three-hour round trip, not that extreme a commute in California today.

The governor pays for his jet-set commute from his own pocket -- more than half-a-million dollars a year. But wait? Isn't this the same Arnold Schwarzenegger who last year was featured on magazine covers as an environmental hero? The same one who flexed his muscles to lead California's fight against global warming? The one who must be aware of the vast amount of global-warming gases and air pollution his jet is spewing?

Yep, same guy. The Los Angeles Times' Evan Halper and Michael Rothfield broke the story last week:

The governor's Gulfstream jet does nearly as much damage to the environment in one hour as a small car does in a year, according to figures compiled by the Helium Report, an online publication for buyers of luxury items.

Administration officials say Schwarzenegger is well aware of this and makes amends by purchasing pollution credits for the carbon dioxide his jet releases. The credits fund efforts worldwide to reduce greenhouse gases, such as projects that harness energy from wind, landfill gas and farm waste, although they don't eliminate the pollution from Schwarzenegger's plane.

Flying the Gulfstream and other jets the governor uses costs as much as $10,000 an hour. Some conservationists say Schwarzenegger is essentially attempting to buy a clean conscience with the carbon offsets, which cost about $43 an hour.

He has been very bold on all these [environmental] initiatives, so it is sad to see him undercut that," said Denis Hayes, president of the Bullitt Foundation, a philanthropy that funds conservation efforts in Western states. "If you are going to be talking about an issue, you should be living the reality you are trying to embrace.

Don't get me started on pollution credits, but it's better than doing nothing. To be fair, Arnold shouldn't be singled out as the only climate hypocrite in government. Even the greenest members of Congress fly back to their home districts every weekend, and some members of the Legislature who live as far from Sacramento as the Bay Area drive back and forth every day, in state-supplied vehicles.

As someone who lived in the Big Tomato for a few years, back when it was hard to find an espresso, I know about the lure of I-80 or Southwest Airlines on Friday afternoon. If you've got your own jet, why not every day?

Here's why not: This governor has gone out on a limb to promote himself as a global warming warrior. It's a laudable stance that has genuinely helped move America toward a greener politics. This latest flap is a rare PR slipup for a master of the game, but it could make some Californians -- like, all of us who don't own a jet -- think twice about how well his walk matches his talk.

Repubies are known to be liars. More often than not they speak out of both sides of their mouths. This enables them to be for and against something at the same time.

Governator is no different than, say, bushwa. Being a repubie, he lies. How can one tell Governator's lying? Simple: when his mouth moves, he's lying.

He will show his green side, and at the same time he will fly his private jet, drive his private humvee, and god only knows (and he ain't telling) what else Governator does that is just the opposite of green.

Funny. I read this whole rant and no where did I see any reference to Al Gore flying around the world in his fuel guzzling, earth killing jet.

Oh, that's right, he bought "Carbon Credits!"

Talk about hypocritical.

They fly around, strutt around, kill and learn to kill... flying their polluting jets and other crafts every hour of the day and night over our cities. That is where your attention should go. Attack them, if you dare.
Your article is stupid and pointless.

Franked mail out of Washington Really Hurts the Environment

I haven't done a study on it, but every time I get a letter from my Congressman, I picture about 400 mail trucks taking mail as far as Alaska, and in a few cases, offshore.
In this 21st century, communications by wire (Email) is as green as it gets, and I think it ought to be the norm for M.O.C.s replying to Email inquiries.

2 or 3 Hummers that he claims are so fine tuned as to cause minimal pollution and sip very, very gently on petrol. But the scariest thing is that he harbors a secret or not so secret wish to be the first foreign born President of the USA. The jet is just another toy. How can Maria stand the duplicity?

Arnold is no bigger a hypocrite than 90% of Americans

O.K. So Governor Arnold is a hypocrite.

Big deal.

He sounds exactly like 90% of "Cowboy Mentality" lazy, complacent Americans who don't recycle, drive gas hog cars, ride airplanes, pop out a tribe of big kids and don't limit childbearing to 2 kids or less. Arnold sounds like every other American who eats supermarket/fast food/junk food which is grown with pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and genetically engineered GMO crops - trashing the environment.

When you point a finger at someone else, you are really pointing three fingers back at YOURSELF.

Take a look in the mirror and make a hard analysis of your own personal consumption of energy. What is YOUR carbon footprint?

I've been organizing peace in Iraq demonstrations for over 5 years. 95% of the peacenik attending these rallies drive to these rallies in their gas guzzling car. I've nearly been beaten up by enraged left wingers at peacenik demonstrations when I politely suggested they get rid of their 12 mpg SUV or 22 mpg sedan car - switch to bike riding, public transit, walking, carpooling.

I live in Sacramento which has LOUSY public transit. Bus service nearly shuts down after 6pm - major blvds have no bus service. Sure, Lite Rail runs till midnight - it's hard to find a bus line operating after 9pm. A 15 minute trip by car - takes over 2 hours by bus in Sacramento. Despite this, I got RID of my car right before the war in Iraq started. I ride my bike, walk and take public transit everywhere.

Is it inconvenient? Heck yeah - but just how "inconvenient" is it for Iraquis rotting in Guantanamo prison, how "inconvenient" is it for the 4 million Iraqui refugees who fled their country in terror - how "inconvenient" is it for the 100,000+ dead civilian Iraquis slaughtered by our govt?

We are fighting this war for oil and Americas lust for cheap consumer goods and our unyielding desire to be energy gluttons.

Then we FINGER POINT at phony politicians like Gov. Arnold - when in reality, the huge demand for oil is CONSUMER DRIVEN by you, me and Joe Six Pack America.

Americans are spoiled rotten and don't want to leave their "comfort zone." Americans don't want to change their energy consumption habits - but love to trash a hypocrite politician or phony Hollywood celebrities who yammer about the environment, then fly private jets, live in huge mansions and lead high energy consumption life styles.

By not driving a car 10,000 miles annually (low mileage) I no longer am creating 6 million tons of global warming gases every year. I'm not supporting crypto-fascist oil corporations - nor do I waste $1,200 a year on car insurance to Corporate Mafia insurance companies. Not owning a car saves me over $8,000 a year, and I lost 20 pounds from exercise!

If you really care about the environment quit eating supermarket crap/junk food/fast food and switch to 100% organic natural foods. I am a student on $12,000 a year income and my diet is 100% organic. Join a natural food coop, start an organic garden. If you don't have a backyard - join a community garden - or grow organic food in containers on your apt balcony. On a tiny apt balcony you can set up trellises for vine plants like tomatoes, berries. Start a "worm bin" to compost your kitchen waste. In Sacramento, it's legal for apt dwellers to put one bee hive on your balcony if you're on the 2nd story or higher. Grow a windowsill herb garden, sprouts in a glass jar in a window.

DO SOMETHING!

Recycle 100% of your trash, quit shopping in dept stores and malls - shop at thrift shops to recycle lightly used clothing. Get newspapers/magazines from the library and cancel your subsriptions to cut down on trees being chopped down.

DO SOMETHING!
