Members of the Westboro Baptist Church, a Christianist hate group whose members are mostly members of the family of Fred Phelps, a disbarred attorney, are at it again, feeding off the misery of innocent, grieving families:

Westboro Baptist Church, a group known for protesting and picketing funerals and memorials of fallen soldiers, is planning to picket at the Sunday afternoon funeral of 18-year-old Auburn freshman Lauren Burk, according to the group's Web site. Burk was killed Tuesday night. Police are investigating her death as a murder...

The group is also planning to picket the funeral of Eve Carson, UNC student body president who was killed Wednesday morning.

Both funerals are listed on the WBC site's online picket schedule for Sunday.

Eve Carson, 22, of Athens, Ga., was murdered on March 5:

[She] was found Wednesday morning lying on a street about a mile from campus. She had been shot several times, including once in the right temple. Her sport utility vehicle was discovered Thursday, a few hours after the police positively identified her as the victim.

The shooting appears to be random, [Chapel Hill Police Chief Brian] Curran said.

Police have reported a break in the case:

Detectives are searching for a man photographed using [Carson's] A.T.M. card.

[Chief Curran] released two surveillance photos of the suspect taken at an automated teller machine, but he declined to say when or where in town the photos were taken. The police also released a photo of a baseball cap the suspect appears to be wearing in both of the surveillance pictures.

Lauren Burk was shot and killed a few miles from the campus of Auburn University in Alabama. Police have arrested a suspect in her killing:

According to police Courtney Lockhart, 23, had been stopped for a driving violation in Phenix City, AL on Friday evening. Police in the Alabama-Georgia border town then contacted Auburn police who identified Lockhart as their prime suspect.

Police focused their investigation on Lockhart earlier in the week after a photograph was obtained that led them to believe he was involved...

Lockhart is now facing capital murder charges, which carries the death penalty. He is also being charged with kidnapping, robbery and attempted rape.

On March 30, activists are planning a protest called the "Million Fags March," near the Phelps' "church" (which is said to be a private home) in Witchita.

the point of protesting at these funerals? What're they hoping to accomplish?

This group has been demonstrating at the funerals of fallen servicemen to promote their view that dead soldiers are God's punishment on America for tolerating gays. (As if no American ever died in a war before the gay rights movement.) They make no claim that the deceased was gay, just that God will keep arranging the deaths of American soldiers until this country clamps down on homosexuals. They actually stand outside the churches and funeral homes waving signs that read "God Hates Faggots" and similar messages in the faces of mourners.

It appears they have now expanded their agenda to include not just soldiers' funerals, but any high-profile death. They are the lowest form of life on earth.

Here in Maryland, the father of one soldier whose funeral was picketed successfully sued the Phelpses and their church and won a multi-million dollar judgment, which may or may not stand on appeal. There are free speech issues competing with privacy issues, obviously. More than 30 states have passed or are considering laws to prohibit demonstrations and pickets of any kind within a certain distance from a funeral. Those laws have been prompted by the activities of Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church.

Christian hate group? From Jesus' point of view, surely a contradiction in terms?

This speech might not be 1st Amendment protected as it's likely to incite violence.

Does anyone know if this was argued in the civil trial?

If these disgusting, ignorant pigs showed up at my loved one's funeral there would be violence; I think this would be the case for most people.

The GOOD thing about Phelps and his clan is that he unites almost everyone else in opposition to him -- gays, straights, liberals, conservatives, anti-war peacenics, soldiers and their families, motorcycle riders, etc.
Phelps hates not only homosexuals, but he hates YOU too, whomever you are. Let us not forget that.

Fred and his weird, incestuous little band of rabid, hate-spewing lunatics illustrate the reason why in-breeding is generally outlawed.

It just occurred to me why Phelps and his merry clan do their evil thing.
They hope to be appointed by President Bush to run the civil-rights division of the Justice Dept! (They just might get that position too -- in the new McCain administration if they fail to get the position during the current regime.)

Are those others Bush appoints any better qualified to do what they are supposed to??

1st Amendment Question

It would be hard to suppress Phelps's odious activities on the grounds that they mght incite violence for the simple reason that to date they have not. A few shouting and shoving matches, perhaps, but nothing really violent. In every case where the Phelpses have been sued, they have defended themselves on 1st Amendment grounds, and in almost every case their claims have been upheld and the cases against them have been dismissed. The Maryland case was an exception--one of the few where the judge permitted the lawsuit to go forward, but even so, he admonished the jury in his instructions that the Constitution guarantees the right to say and do hateful, disgusting things that the community despises. It is very hard to outlaw Phelps's speech without starting down a slipper slope of censorship. The better solution is for states to pass laws, as they have been doing, prohibiting picketing or demonstrations of ANY sort within a certain proximity to funerals. That would stop Phelps from waving a sign reading "God Hates Faggots" in a mourner's face, but it would also prohibit a group from holding up signs reading, "Thank you for your sacrifice," or "God Bless Our Brave Soldiers."

Phelps is SO anti-gay,

it makes me wonder what he's hiding in himself. He reminds me of the neighbor in 'American Beauty' who beat up his son for suspecting he was gay, then later tried to kiss Kevin Spacey. Phelps is probably fighting the pseudo-sin of being attracted to men on a constant basis. Why else would he be so obsessed with pointing the finger like he does? Pointing your finger at people makes three of your fingers point right back at yourself. I'll bet it comes out sooner or later that he's gay himself. Me thinks he doth protest too much.

It also irritates the crap out of me when assholes like Phelps use Jesus, one of the most unconditionally loving deities on the planet, to spread hatred and violence. It just doesn't compute.

anti-hate legislation is not...

...anti-free speech legislation!

but just the thought of anti-hate laws in the US makes people there cringe and I always wonder... why?

suppressing hate isn't the same thing as suppressing freedom of speech... as in all things... moderation with empathy and compassion will take us much further then the current stalemates, divisions and separations any day!

Morons In Chapel Hill: Fred Phelps Group to Protest at Eve Carlson Memorial On UNC Campus
Posted by: MoMoMo on Mar 16, 2008 5:23 AM

From http://moronsinchapelhill.com/

Not content in the quest of destroying the lives of families who have lost their children to AIDS or causing anguish to the parents and families of fallen soldiers, the "God Hates Fags" Church (sic) is coming to town to protest at the Eve Carlson Memorial and they will do it on the UNC campus while the memorial is being held. The question Mo has for the students of UNC and the citizens of Chapel Hill and Orange County is this: are you going to do what veterans have begun doing when Fred and his crew show up by surrounding them in a cloister like fashion with motorcycles and humans shielding the grieving families from these scumbags or are you simply doing to sit around with your thumbs up your anuses and act like the candy ass pussy boys the rest of the Tar Heel State thinks you people are?

From the Westboro "Church" Homepage:

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Smith Center 300 Skipper Bowles Drive This is for the memorial service for Eve Carson. Although her death was reportedly described as "a random crime," we know that this is nothing less than the Wrath of God upon the children of Disobediance. You have taught your children to cater to every lust and false religous system and to reject the Word of God. It does not matter that she was the student body president of the University of North Carolina. What matters here is that God did not slay YOU today and you have an opportunity to repent of your crimes against God. However, this is nothing less than the Quarrel of the Covenant. Like Esau, you have sold your birthright, america, and chosen to live as a whore. You have been cast out with no blessings, and now you are irreversibly headed for Hell. Now, "Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation." (Judges 10:14) "I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear. This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice. The wind shall eat up all thy pastors, and thy lovers shall go into captivity: surely then shalt thou be ashamed and confounded for all thy wickedness." (Jeremiah 22:21-22) America is Doomed. Amen.
