A couple of weeks ago, when the Clinton campaign circled March 4 on its calendar, the thinking was that Texas and Ohio would save Hillary Clinton — they’d serve as firewall states that prevented Barack Obama from ending this contest once and for all. Big wins in these two states, where polls showed her with sizable leads, would deliver some much-needed delegates to Clinton’s effort.

With a couple of days to go, that scenario seems far less likely, but both of Tuesday’s key contests are almost certainly going to be the most competitive contests since Super Tuesday (Obama has won each of the 11 subsequent contests by large, double-digit margins.) So, who’s going to win? New Mason-Dixon/McClatchy polls suggest it’s anybody’s guess.

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are neck and neck heading into a pivotal primary showdown Tuesday in Ohio and Texas, two delegate-rich states where Clinton held leads just weeks ago, according to two new polls released Sunday.

Clinton leads in Ohio by 47-43 percent. Obama leads in Texas by 46-45 percent. Those standings are both within the polls’ 4 percentage point margin of error — meaning that either one could be ahead in each state. And nearly one in ten likely voters remains undecided in each state, more than enough to swing Tuesday’s results in either direction.

“They’re both close races,” said Brad Coker of Mason-Dixon. “Hillary has a little better shot in Ohio. She still has a little lead there. Texas is a tossup.”

Other polls show the races shaping up in similar ways.

Reuters released its numbers this morning.

Democrat Hillary Clinton narrowly trails rival Barack Obama in Texas and the two are virtually tied in Ohio ahead of critical contests that could decide the fate of her presidential bid, according to a Reuters/C-SPAN/Houston Chronicle poll released on Sunday. […]

Clinton, a New York senator and former first lady, has seen big poll leads disappear in both states over the last two weeks as Obama seized control of the Democratic race with his winning streak.

She now trails Obama in Texas by 4 points, 47 percent to 43 percent, up from a 2-point edge for Obama on Saturday. Obama’s strength in the state’s big cities and among men, young voters and blacks has offset her advantage with the state’s sizable bloc of Hispanics and older voters.

Clinton still holds leads in heavily Hispanic south Texas and conservative west Texas, but Obama has pulled virtually even among women voters, usually one of her strongest constituencies.

In Ohio, Clinton has a statistically insignificant 1-point edge on Obama, 47 percent to 46 percent, after the two were dead even on Saturday.

And what about those other March 4 states? The ones thinking, “What about us?”

It looks like Clinton’s best shot of a big win on Tuesday is in Rhode Island, where a new poll shows her leading, 49% to 40%.

And in my adopted home state of Vermont, it looks like Obama should have an equally easy victory. Polling is relatively scarce, but a poll a few days ago from the local CBS affiliate showed Obama leading Clinton, 53% to 39%.

It matters who you vote for now because McCain is self-destructing.

... and he will be the neocon nominee. That means who ever wins the dem nomination will be elected. I am not sure about congress since they betrayed a lot of independants like me, but its not clear who will replace them either, so its almost a given that it doesn't matter anymore anyway.

I don't like HIllary at all, but I guess I would vote for her against mcCain, however, if Obama wins, then we will globalize for sure and I won't vote for him due to the heavy handling of this man by the CFR and his wife who is also a member, and their globalization agenda.

If he wins the nomination then I will write someone in rather than caste a vote between the two parties and I will vote third party for congress. I am sick and tired of no choices. I wish Dennis or Edwards had stuck it out.

It always has. Iraq is just a symptom.

Agreed that both Dems are being bought by Goldman, but voter attitudes will be the primary driver. And voters know they're being screwed financially.

Anyone here thinks that the Repugs have a chance, why don't you "bet the farm"? It's easy. Short Gold! Buy bank stocks!

If the new people show up, Obama wins. If the new people don't show up. Hillary wins. So far, the new people are showing up. The new people are all ages but predominately under 30. They have cell phones and don't get polled. That is why it is nearly always a surprise to everyone when Obama wins. Not all are undecided until the last minute. They have been there. In Texas, the white males over 30 will go perdominately for Obama. That is because they don't like Hillary. It's a fact. Ask them why. My prediction? Obama by 7 points.

I continue to be astounded by the unsupported statements of (supposed) fact surfacing all over the internet and print media.
54% of the electorate are women, 6% of whom are black. We vote in numbers disproportionately larger than men, especially those of us who are older than 25. And as for men: I know many who are not threatened by Hillary and are voting for her. This will be a close race. Great. We are not near finished with the primary contest. Hold off, all of you detractors.

First of all the man is just a con man. Fortunately now he is starting to get scrutinized by the press as was Hillary for the past few months! His association with scumbags such as Rezco who was indicted today, his preacher and mentor along with Farrahkan who hates jews, whites, latinos and asians including gays, and worst one of all; William Aeryes a radical terrorist that bombed our pentegon, all these are friends and have contricuted to his campaign. Today he was also found out that what he is telling the people of Ohio regarding NAFTA, is just to get their vote. A chief advisor told the candaian government Obama was not intending to renegotiate the NARTA AGREEMENT!! So finally the questions are going to him... When asked he stmbled, studered and stmbled again and again. Now its time for the Media to stop giving Obama a Free pass. He will be a field day for the Republicans and I can not wait. At least Hillary is tough and can give it right back. All Obama can do is nice speeches and his rehetoric same old same old, I did not vote for the war. He did not even vote at all becasue he was not a senator at the time. Remember he is only been in the senate for 2 years and the war is almost 6-7 years old. He gave a speech and he thinks hop skip and a jump into the White House. Get informed people don't take this from me..Get informed//This man is a con artist whispering sweet nothing in the ears of our youth, when they find themselves not beeing able to afford the Lattes then they will realize what a BIG MISTAKE!! His Association with all these shady people is enough to dump the guy!

Well Her thesis apparently demonstrated racists tendencies..Is this why she for the firt time in her lif is proud of America becasue her hubby Obama got the white votes that he got? Check it out!

Its time to make the Obama's accountable, they have gotten a free pass from the press! He was asked today a few questions that obviously he was unconfortable answering and he studdred and looked very guilty...
Time to make Obama accountable!!! The American People need to know more about Obama. We are tiered of the same Rehetoric of change, hope and she voted for the war same old words.
We are tired of this and its time for all Americans to open up our eyes!!!
