Hypocrisy Alert: Bush Condemns Leaders Who Pose for Photos With "Tyrants"

Posted by Amanda Terkel, Think Progress at 3:06 PM on February 29, 2008.

Perhaps Bush forgot all the times that he sat down and had his picture taken with leaders of questionable human rights credentials.

In yesterday's news conference, President Bush sharply attacked Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) argument that the president "should never fear to negotiate" with America's enemies. Bush told reporters:

It will send a discouraging message to those who wonder whether America will continue to work for the freedom of prisoners. It will give great status to those who have suppressed human rights and human dignity. [...]
Sitting down at the table, having your picture taken with a tyrant such as Raul Castro, for example, lends the status of the office and the status of our country to him. He gains a lot from it by saying, look at me, I'm now recognized by the President of the United States.

A Picture Tells More Words Than Bush Has Ever Spoken Correctly

There is the picture of Bush HOLDING-HANDS with the Saudi head tyrant. ("Raped? Then off with their vaginas!")
There is that famous picture of Rumpy shaking hands with Sad-damn.
And then there are probably countless pictures of Bush with the darkest of tyrannical dark lords ever, Dick Cheney.

Yeah, I do smell hypocrisy coming from the White House. Who would have ever thought THAT!?

only following in the steps of the presidents who preceded him and made it their business to prop up dictatorships wherever they were needed for American purposes.
Bush is only despicable because he lacks the finesse of a Teddy Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, Ronald Reagan, and the rest of the rogues who were better suited to a post office wall.
The Shah of Iran, the House of Saud, Duvaliers, Somozas, Fulgencio Batista, Rafael Trujillo, Agusto Pinochet, etc., etc., etc.

...is the biggest tyrant that the world has known since Adolf Hitler. And for eight long years, we Americans have become "the 'good' Germans".

Hugo Chavez was right when he made the sign of the cross in the UN, following Bush. "I smell brimstone", he said. Chavez may be a dictator--but he knew his superior (in dictatorship), when he saw him.

they don't "play along" with this administration. They're only "dictators" if they don't practice Bush's brand of "freedom."

In BushSpeak, Freedom means... do as we say, not as we do. If you can go along with that, then you're a "freedom-loving democratic leader."
