Pelosi Insists Justice Dept Should (Gasp!) Enforce the Law

Posted by Richard Blair, The All Spin Zone at 4:42 AM on February 29, 2008.

How can you ignore legally issued subpoenas, be cited for contempt of congress, yet still walk the streets with apparent immunity from prosecution?

I am quite floored by this. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi demanded that the Justice Department (gasp!) enforce the law:

Today, Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent the following letter to U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey, informing him of the referral letter sent to U.S. Attorney of the District of Columbia Jeffrey Taylor on contempt citations of former White House Counsel Harriet Miers and White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten. Taylor is required by law to bring the matter before a grand jury. However, Mukasey has indicated that the Justice Department intends to prevent Taylor from complying with the law...

In essence, Miers and Bolten refused to comply with congressional subpoenas to appear.

Let me ask a stupid question. Supposing that I was subpoenaed to appear in a local or county court for either a criminal or civil matter, however minor. And, let's suppose that I refused to appear. What would happen?

A local magistrate could (and would) issue a bench warrant for my arrest. My name would be entered into a police database such that if I were driving down the road, with a bench warrant on my head, if I were driving a car registered in my name an pulled over by the local Hooterville constabulary, I'd be cuffed and taken to the local lockup until I made an appearance before the judge.

So how is it that miscreants from the Bush administration can ignore legally issued congressional subpoenas, be cited for contempt of congress, yet still walk the streets with apparent immunity from prosecution (or arrest or detention) by the U.S. Justice Department?

Isn't that kind of making a mockery of the law for the rest of us? I'm just saying...

Digg!

I am not really surprised that the administration that has flaunted and disregarded the law for the last 7 years is continuing to do so.

Too bad the congress hasn't the guts to impeach the jerks - start with Dick !!

Too right you are! This criminal administration must be dealt with severely and immediately or the whole damn country is going to start imitating their lawlessness, with good reason. When those we make our leaders lead like lawless cowboys, they turn the entire country into a wild west sit-com, except, it ain't funny. Time to reap what you have sown, boys.

refused to uphold the law. He's not going to investigate this at all.

Appears it's "case closed." He's not interested in prosecuting.

It's about time for people to show up with torches and pitchforks on the White House lawn, I believe!!!!

American people should rise up against fascist government.

It would be nice if the American people would rise up and take to the streets in protest against this fascist government. I know that that’s not going to happen any time soon. Americans are too selfish and lazy. Just give them some cheap gas, a big car, lots of junk food and a television and all they will complain about is wanting cheaper gas, a bigger car, a lot more junk food and some more channels for the television so they can numb their minds and forget how unhappy they are.

...Pelosi's first words, upon assuming the rank of Speaker of the House, were: "Impeachment is off the table". The fix was in, and Bush went right on, knowing that he was safe, knowing that we would give him a pass on the basis of: "He's almost gone, only a couple of years left--what more harm can he do?"

Yeah, folks...what more harm?

Who lit a fire under your butt Pelosi? You're only a few years behind your responsibilities. Start using that gavel or hand it to someone with the spine to wield it.
Your and your cohort in the Senate, Reid "The Appeaser", are a disgrace to the process of government of and by the people.
We know that you're worried about banging your head against the wall because you don't have the votes for any meaningful change in the direction of this country you are suppose to be directing, but that's exactly what the majority of people want,,they want to see you and and many more, banging your head or whatever part of your body you want to use----yes, we think IT is that important! You should have been screaming bloody murder a long time ago. Congrats on leaving the comfortable shadows and wandering into the light of reality.
It must be that you're worried about your career, that's usually the only reason politicians undertake a courageous stand on anything.

I hope Cindy Sheehan takes your seat! At least she doesn't need a poll to know what to do.
