Why I Called Fox News "Propaganda" While Live on Fox News

As most of you have seen, I ripped into Fox "News" while on a Fox "News" morning show this past Saturday. If you haven't seen it, the clip is to your right. I didn't say what I said in order to get attention. I figured that my statements would piss off a few hundred Fox viewers (or maybe help them question the "facts" they're getting from their sacred channel) and that I would show the clip to a few friends. As it turned out, within a day the clip had been viewed around 300,000 times on various sites, and I was getting interview requests from national radio shows. Apparently I struck a nerve.

I thought I'd answer a bunch of questions people had about the incident. Many have asked what happened before that moment to make me say those horrible things about such a lovely news network. (Isn't it sad that when someone speaks the truth on TV, we all ask "What caused it???") Well, nothing really happened in the interview - A right-wing comedian and I told some lame Huckabee jokes. The anchor, hard hitting journalist Clayton Morris, asked the necessary questions while seeming completely unaware that I was a fellow human being, and that was about it. But in a broader sense, what "happened" to make me call Fox "News" a "festival of ignorance" was the past twelve years of knowing this festering pile of propaganda coated with drivel and wrapped in the American flag has been spewing its poisonous eggs into the brains of average Americans. Now THAT's desecration of the flag - watching it flap back and forth behind a Fox "news" program.

What happened after they cut to a commercial? Clayton Morris was visibly furious but didn't say a word. Neither did anyone in the main studio. I got up, took my microphone off, and walked silently back to the greenroom, itching to the get the fuck out of that sixth circle of hell. Back in the greenroom I saw the female co-host, who was wearing her normal business skirt that is only half an inch away from illegal in 23 states. Even though there are three TV's back there showing nothing but Fox "News" (and we act like water boarding is torture?) she apparently had not watched the segment. She looked at me and said, "GREAT JOB!! We need more humor on the show. It's all so serious!" She did not get to the natural conclusion of her thought, "Now excuse me. I have to go interview strippers wearing Star Trek outfits designed for three-year-olds."

I then left the building without speaking to anyone. Following the break, intrepid newshound Clayton Morris pretended on-air as if he had thrown me out of the building. Here's the clip: He says something like, "I had to get rid of that guy!" The other anchor then says something like, "Well, it shows we have both sides of the issues here at Fox News." They then go on to interview the naked Star Trek chicks. So first of all, Fox "News" shows that it feels the solution to someone speaking their opinion is violence, but then they say it shows they have all viewpoints on their network. Within three seconds they stated that they accept all viewpoints and that they physically throw opposing viewpoints of the building. I'm impressed they're able to walk when they're that deeply drenched in hypocrisy.

Everyone has been amused with the irony that after I said my remarks respectable journalist Clayton Morris hit back with, "You can get all the news you can at Fox," and then sends it over to a story about Captain Kirk's lovers, which would not have been a news story even if it had been covered during Star Trek's actual run 38 years ago.

People have also asked whether I knew I was going to say that stuff or it just came out. My answer will make some like me more and some like me less. I knew I was going to say something, but I didn't exactly know what. When Fox called to ask me to be on, I knew that the only reason I said yes was to tear them down and give some truth to their viewers. (By the way, they clearly had not done their research. They knew I was a left-wing comic, but if they'd looked up my earlier work, they would have known I despise them.) If I wasn't there to speak my mind, I would have no justifiable reason to be on their network. Sure, I would like to be a regular comedian commentator on any network (it's good for my career), but I have no desire to support a propaganda machine that has facilitated the false election of George W. and the unwarranted invasion of Iraq. In all honesty, I thought saying this stuff would hurt my career, and maybe it still will, but I knew I didn't have a choice. Too many people have died for me to look the other way and tell asinine jokes on their couch. Until yesterday I had not seen Montel Williams's appearance on Fox "News," but apparently he also felt he could not sit there and talk about celebrity news while ignoring the truth. (Besides, asinine jokes are my day job. I take weekends off.)

This helps answer the last question - Wasn't my tirade a little rude and lacking in class? A few people who agree with what I said have asked this. My own mother said I should have warned the nice news people that I was going to trash them. My view of a lack of class is knowing that nearly a million civilians have died in Iraq and yet then reporting that 80,000 have. My view of unrefined is calling peace activists "anti-American." My view of barbaric is being aware that genocide goes on in Darfur but refusing to speak about it on-air because the people funding it are your corporate friends. My view of disrespectful is calling the first probable African American nominee for president "Muslim" in hopes that it will inspire enough racism in your viewers to defeat him in November. My idea of vulgar is creating false "news" stories that have some relation to naked women so that you can show clips of those women while you discuss it in a "professional" manner.

I realize I'm a comedian, and I realize my job is not to tell the truth. But in a situation like this, I feel it's a crime not to. Plus, all the best comedians have spoken the truth - Bruce, Carlin, Pryor, Hicks. So I don't give a fuck if people say "that's not funny." Furthermore, I don't consider myself special in any way because I feel all of you who support me would have done the same. And thank you for all the overwhelming support! I had no idea people would be so excited about this. Hopefully my statements and Montel's statements and countless others will continue to grow into an time of truth. Hopefully, if nothing else, we can all renew in people the desire to stop watching tripe, start reading, start forming their own opinions, and start speaking what they learned to the people around them.

I'd love to keep in touch with all of you. My sites are www.leecamp.net and www.YouTube.com/LeeCamp and my email is Camp337@hotmail.com.

Keep it up dude!

Fox is only one out of a bunch, the others are CNN, ABC, CBS, and NBC 'news' organizations. You can't even trust national newspapers.

Do just a little research and you'll find that they all have ties to the military industrial complex or global banks.

Turn off the damn TV!

Yoou're a true patriot! (Oh, I almost forgot... you're very funny, too!) Thanks for continuing on in the tradition of those you mentioned above.

He said:

"I realize I'm a comedian, and I realize my job is not to tell the truth."

Actually, comics are more likely to be the ultimate source of truth.

Lee, I love that you recognize that their is an ethical obligation to say true things in the face of massive propaganda-- and that comedy can be engaged, irreverent, and galvanizing while being entertaining. It's rare to find people who have both a sense of humor and an sense of justice. Please keep it up. Please.

Hey Alternet, i watched the O'Reilly Factor last night and Bill called Ariana Huffington a "nazi" and no different from the KKK because one of her million posters (hell maybe it was O'reilly himself) said that, in essence, the world would be a better place if Nancy Reagan would die.

As if there aren't nasty things said by conservatives in the world...

anyway, ya'll should post that clip. the guy is getting outrageous.

And I loved it!

I seriously doubt that it's gonna hurt your career - the people you POed ain't the ones with the sense of humor. Did you seriously think that was a possibility?

You cynically used that great icon of "virtue," "fairness" and "balance" to further your own career, IMO. And the problem is? When the courteous thing is to kiss Murdoch's wrinkled ass, color me rude.

What I guess I am saying is that I think you have used FOX to further your own career - cruelly exposing FOX viewers to something they prefer to remain completely shielded from - the truth! It's gonna give you the shot you've wanted - to get rich if you're good enough.

Good luck!

I'm glad somebody's sticking it to the Man, but there's no need to make a big speech about it. Is he suggesting he's the next Carlin or some revolutionary historical figure?

In this piece, he comes across like a high-school storyteller: "Dude, I totally told them off...and then I was talking to this chick in a mini-skirt...and I don't give a **** what they think of me, and..."

He had his Jim Morrison moment. He should let it speak for itself and move on.

This article is comical, which is fitting being written by a self proclaimed comedian. Irony... This article is propaganda, the very thing that the writer was complaining about. After decades of liberal stations like ABC, CBS and NBC, one station has surfaced that leans more conservative than liberal, Fox. In this great country, it is wonderful to have the choice to watch either of the stations which lean political bias. My suggestion to the comedian is to watch a station that is more consistent with his political aspirations, be a comedian, and not another movie star expert on government affairs...

Ah, but Sir: the job of the comedian [as it was of the Jester in Medieval Court] is to tell the truths no-one else is brave enough to tell. The trick is to tell those truths in such a way as people will listen against their will... and get away with it.

As such I truly hope someone in Fox was paying attention and gives your statement more than a passing milliseconds thought. Hell, maybe even the audience will take the hint and watch.... uhm...

Which one is the *good* News station?

I know I will get flamed royally. But, I have to say a few things. First of all Fox News does lean hard to the right, yet it is WAY, WAY more moderate than the extreme left lean of: CNN, TNT, ABC, CBS, NBC, The New York (gag) Times, The Boston Globe, PBS, BBC, Etc. etc. etc..... It is typical of the Liberal Religion to be intolerant of any view that does not fit within their religion (liberalism). Thus the disgust with the "Propaganda" reported by Fox. If one is to disagree with a Liberal he is immediately called childish names or worse. At least, if a Democrat gets in the White House, and things go well, I will be happy about it. In contrast, Liberals root for more deaths in Iraq, bash America (even if they are American), and express pure unrestrained glee if things go badly for non-liberal leaders.

A random comment as an example: Now that it has been shown scientifically that Global Warming is a myth, how long will it be before Liberals blame global cooling on greenhouse gases and Bush? How long until Liberals say they never believed in global warming, that it was all Republican propaganda to sell more solar cells for the benefit of the solar cell special interests? Ha ha ha

After this stunt you should be next in line for a comedy show when the old guys finally retire, I'm sure you'll be able to inject alot more humanity and things of actual interest in your show. I would even stay up late just to watch it! If I had a T.V.

You call ABC, NBC, CNN and the lot, liberal? Are you out of your mind or do you live in a fox built cave? THose stations lean to conservative views, and in many cases embrace the neocon propaganda. see glenn beck among many others. Saying Fox "leans" to the right is ridiculous - if they leaned any further they be in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on a cruise ship to hell with Rupie Murderoch, the captain of the Titanic. Questioning what we are doing in our political endeavors is the responsibility of journalists and Americans - scrutinize their every move and policy choice, hold their feet to the fire. Following along in a compliant, thoughless Laura Bush approach is the precept for tyranny. If you want state appproved media, perhaps you'd be happier in Syria. Tass News Agency seems right (wing-lunacy) up your alley. Let's reclaim America and encourage the free press to do its' job.

Who is Dan Rather and why did he step down shortly after the 2004 election? Who are the three CBS executives he took down with him? Who is Jayson Blair, formerly of the New York Times? Who is Katie Couric?

Your left eye is blind and your right one doesn't believe anything it sees.

I know propaganda appears on both sides, but Dan Rather (a former anchor! meaning he keeps the boat still in troubled waters) and Jayson Blair lied. They lied to the American people.

What you said was NEWS, the star trek uniforms on the other hand were masoginistic and typical of their network.

The absolutely most pathetic and sad thing about this whole event is the number of people who wrote you with concern. Trust me, you're the one who is okay

I was in my Wells Fargo Bank branch in Lincoln NE today just standing in line and minding my business. On the TV above us (wall unit above the counter) FOX news was blaring away. When I got to the front of the line, I complained. Everybody needs to complain! We have banked with WF for 30 years. I told the manager that if I saw that propaganda on in there again we were moving our business elsewhere. She changed the channel.

You just don't get it, do you Lee? You're on a WEEKEND MORNING SHOW. It's fluff. It's what all morning shows on all networks are. That's why Star Trek sex kittens were on. That's why YOU, no-name comedian, were on -- to tell, as you say, lame Huckabee jokes. You deride Clayton Morris with your sarcastic "hard-hitting journalist" comment. Well who the f*ck do you think you are? Henry Kissinger? The topic at hand was not the war in Iraq or genocide in Darfur, so why act suddenly like that was your mandate? You, like MANY other liberals (who've been far more effective in delivering measured, thoughtful discourse) were INVITED to appear on Fox. You chose to prove yourself the petulant, self-serving child you are, and thus will not be invited back. Clayton Morris, by the way, used to be on a show called the Daily Buzz on which he proved himself to be a true-blue liberal -- something which Fox must have known when they hired him. But it's all just "propaganda" and a "festival of ignorance," right Lee? Or could it be that it's simply a network that features commentators you disagree with? When this has died out next month, have fun with the rest of career, which is likely to be a Festival of Obscurity.

What truth?

There are certain spectacles that are best reserved for those times in life when one is caught unaware, as in sudden road accidents or, in this case, when a brash young comedian attempts to turn petulance into profundity.
In this case the profundity we are to entertain is “truth”, and lest I appear to be reading Mr. Camp incorrectly let’s use his own words; "Isn’t it sad that when someone speaks the truth on TV, we all ask “What caused it???". One is left to wonder what “truth” Mr. Camp can be referring to here? Again Mr. Camp provides an answer “the past twelve years of knowing…” followed by such scintillating facts as drivel coated propaganda wrapped in an American flag and placing poisonous eggs in “average” American minds!. How one knows what poisonous eggs enter or are retained by an American mind would, its seems to me, be something rather difficult to ascertain. Generally our “knowing” is limited to the “poisonous eggs” that get into our own minds.
If we are to take Mr. Camp’s implicit argument at face value we are lead to some important deductions. 1) That Lee Camp must watch a lot of Fox News. 2) That Lee Camp is immune to the affects of the “poisonous eggs” that Fox New spewed into his brain. 3) That the reason for this immunity is, ….well…., that can be found in Mr. Camp’s use of the term “average American”, that Lee Camp must not be an “average” American!
But then who is???
The explanation that Mr. Camp uses to justify his behavior plays out like a bad version of some super hero battling a criminal intent on bending the minds of average people to his will, using a mind control device connected to the mass media…oh wait, that’s almost the the plot from “Batman Forever”! Which, I suppose, puts Fox New in the role of the Riddler! Oh my!
The perennial problem one faces with all comedians is when to take them seriously. Was Mr. Camp being serious on Fox News? He certainly wasn’t up until he had his little outburst. After all, other than calling the news operation of the morning show a “festival of ignorance” and the bleating out a fanciful Iraqi death toll, he merely advises people to walk outside and hug their children, presumably, something the ‘average American” wasn’t doing enough of until Mr. Camp commandeered the mind control devices of Fox News. If you think about this it is quite a pity, since, Mr. Camp seems to have wasted the one opportunity he will ever get to really get some good done! He had direct access to the “average American” mind and could have deposited whatever efficacious egg he saw fit and the best he could come up with was some fresh air and hugs. I think I saw that recommendation in an old Readers Digest my grandmother had and while I enjoy both fresh air and hugs I don’t find them a panacea for anything.
But then Mr. Camp really isn’t interesting in doing good, if you read is small autobiography at LeeCamp.net, which is actually a redirect to News Corp’s Myspace site, can you say irony, you will find his philosophy on the subject in a nut shell; "Somewhere around age 23, while doing comedy, I realized our world is a mess. I find the best way to come to terms with just how f*cked things are is to make people laugh at it."
Seriously, what are we to make of this statement? Is the world actually more of a mess now than in some previous era? Are we all living in an age that is more fucked up than say the first half of the 20th Century, just to pick one? One presumes that had Mr. Camp been alive for WWI, the Depression, WWII and all of the Cold War that making people laugh would have allowed them to come to terms with these trivialities instead of doing something about them. How nice! But aren’t we all glad those people just didn’t come to terms with these things while enjoying a good chuckle, but actually did something about them?

I think I will go out on a limb and simply state that Mr. Camp wasn’t really doing any of the things he says he was, or doing them for the justifications he has described. I think Mr. Camp was just being rude, and that he knew he was being rude as read in his uncharacteristically stiff and embarrassed body language and his inability to really speak the truth or any part of an actual truth. I think it would be simpler to just come out and say I wanted to be rude on Fox News because its an inconvenient outlet opposed to my ideology and what I think people really ought to believe. At least that would have been honest if not really amusing!

I've occasionally watched Fox news way over here on the other side of the world and admittedly I cannot watch for to long,as the ringing of the "bullshit detector" inside my head becomes overwhelming

Well done Lee!

"Within three seconds they stated that they accept all viewpoints and that they physically throw opposing viewpoints of the building. I'm impressed they're able to walk when they're that deeply drenched in hypocrisy."

... frakin' brilliant! So well done. Great essay! And bravo to you my good man! :)

This story made me smile -- with relief and pleasure. If we're going to function as a democracy again, we are going to have to do an intervention on Fox "news" addicts, and this is a nice start.

I only wish that Hillary Clinton, in one of her many appearances on Faux News, had had the same clarity and courage. But she goes along with the game of Emperor's New Clothes, pretending every time that Fox is a neutral news channel. See? She WILL do anything to get elected! (That's the other half of the "monster" quote, not Ruandan genocide, BTW...)

Lee Camp was great on Fox. They are a fake news channel that lock steps behind Bush. Lee shocked the crap out of the anchor.
