Tim Russert Loses Democratic Debate

Posted by Attaturk, Firedoglake at 8:58 AM on February 27, 2008.

Russert figures that since Farrakhan is black and Obama ia black anything Farrakhan says must automatically be what Obama thinks.

In modern political discourse, per our punditry, a cult is defined as any sizable group of enthused supporters of a political candidate in a purported Democracy. But if we are going to be loose with definitions, then let us address the 'Cult of Russert'.

I admit, I didn't watch the debate, I had other priorities ("Work your magic Mangroomer") but many brave masochists did. And from their comments it appears that with the exception of one group -- television talking heads -- the clear loser was the man who enables Dick Cheney to control the message, Tim Russert. Held up by his feted peers as the "Ultimate in Bobbleheads".

After all, Louis Farrakhan is black -- Barack Obama is black -- therefore anything Farrakhan says must be automatically what Obama thinks because apparently to Tim Russert all black men have an intellectual osmosis that links them together*. Like in "The Matrix" which had Cornel West in it so it must have some form of factual basis (only in Tim Russert World would African-American intellectuals be saved by Keanu Reeves). And, of course, feckless and worthless talking point driven questions were also directed toward Hillary Clinton.

But it is in more than this that Timmah & Friends fail us. Digby sums it up perfectly -- having actually watched the debate:

The problem is Tim Russert and all his petty, shallow acolytes who spend all their time reading Drudge and breathlessly reporting every tabloid tidbit and sexy rumor and seeking out minor inconsistencies from years past in lieu of doing any real work.

Judging by their silly questions tonight, Russert and Williams obviously know nothing about health care policy, Iraq, Islamic terrorism, economics, global trade or any other subject that requires more than five minutes study to come up with some gotcha question or a stupid Jack Bauer fantasy. It's embarrassing.

These people guide the way citizens perceive politics even if the citizens don't know it. It's hard for me to see how anything can truly change until this is dealt with.

A-yup.

*May mean that Clarence Thomas is a killer, unquestioning, cyborg from the future...or not.

give little credit to their watchers. Russert should have dropped it after Obama's first answer. He (Russert) certainly makes himself look very stupid. Perhaps he belongs on Fox, where he would find watchers and moderators more similar in I.Q.

Tim Russert just completely wasted everyone's time with that worthless line of questioning. Did he not get the memo that those questions were ruled ridiculous several months ago?

Clinton could have scored a couple points though if she criticized the questions but she sort of sat back and let it go, then engaged in silly wordplay.

Whatever happened to issues?

Why is it not OK to use Obamas middle name? If it has some secret meaning shouldn't we be given the info. I see nothing wrong with, nor do i think McCain should have apoligized. This is the idiocy of Political Correctness.

Obama should be as fair game as any white person is during this campaign.

His reputation has been preceeding him for years now. He has a 'better than everyone else' air about him. Presidential debates are about the people running for office and the moderators are not the main attraction. He's there to ask questions on behalf of the American people, not to be clever and boost his own ratings. He should know his place. Thanks, ANNA

You should have watched, then you might have known what the question was. Farrakhan has endorsed Obama. Russert wanted to know Obama's reaction to the endorsement. If or when David Duke endorses McCain, I hope someone asks him the same question. Russert et al may deserve some criticism, but not for that.

but my friend last night said that Tim Russert looks like a testicle.

He's RIGHT! he DOES look like a testicle. i can't really prove this with reason, but it makes SENSE, doesn't it?

i wish that when Russert had asked Kucinich if he had ever seen a UFO, Kucinich would have replied, "You look like a testicle. I'm sick of you and this bullshit." and then walked off the stage with his middle finger up.

that might have dispelled some of the New-Agey stereotypes attached to him.

During the course of the debate you didn't see (although it is in the clip you show) Russert didn't follow up on his most provocative line of questioning concerning Farrakhan. Russert points out that Jeremiah Wright, Obama's minister at Trinity United Church, is a vocal supporter and associate of Farrakhan. In my book that is like being friends with a supporter of Hitler. This is the guy Obama looks to for inspiration? (He says he named one of his books for a sermon preached by Wright.) How can that be justified? This is very disturbing. I want to hear an answer, because that's enough for Obama to lose my vote. Why Russert didn't follow up on that one I don't understand. And why no one else is talking about it is a mystery to me as well.

Listen, just because you've been given this forum to comment on politics, doesn't mean that you should use it as space for a demented, semi-literate rant. Alternet readers are largely an intellectual bunch, and I should think they would feel insulted at having their time taken up by someone who didn't even bother to watch the debate he's complaining about.

This type of content isn't worth the digital space it takes up. Next time just buy yourself a journal, or perhaps actually watch the debate.

At one point it seemed that Tim thought he was running against Clinton when he was arguing with her about her NAFTA record.
I'm a supporter of Obama, but even at that point I'm thinking, please let her answer the question and then let Obama respond, don't interrupt her and repond for Obama.
Plus the frequent use of video clips I think detracted from the debate.
At the end it seemed the moderators wanted to kick up some dirt, baiting Obama and then Clinton to name something the other must demonstrate to prove they are worthy of the nomination. I liked how each of them instead focused on why they were the better candidate, not why the other one was worse.

Have we all lost the fact that Obama's mother was White, doesn't that make Obama Bi-racial? I am sick and tired of all this nonsence about how Black he is or isn't, the media needs to get a grip on the facts, as does the rest of the country. Or do we leave it up to the U. S. Census bureau to decide which child is which color. Digusted with all of the campaigning and the media coverage. What if they held a campaign and no one voted? Now that is some food for thought!

Clinton says "we can't let anyone, in any way, say these things...". Right -- so round them up and lock them away, and let's forget about freedom of speech if we find it offensive. What else should we let people say, in any way? Shows where Clinton is coming from!

I'm amazed that people are still paying them good money to watch this childish state propagandist garbage from idiots like Russert on the telescreen (in Orwell's '1984' it was the privilege of only the inner party to turn the screens off.)

It shows that at least five US Presidents had black ancestors and Thomas Jefferson 3rd US President was considered the first Black Pesident. The others are: Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge. one of the commenters made reference to AlterNet subscribers being intellectually sophisticated. you sure couldn't prove it by most of the petty, snotty, sarcastic, whining comments preceding mine.
as for the content, although I agree that there are times when Russert is not what we would want him to be, I think he was on target with the line of questioning re Wright and Farrakhan. in fact, he did not go far enough in holding Obama's feet to the fire. we all know what Farrakhan is, and it's deplorable. but Wright has been getting a free pass because the white establishment is afraid to challenge his anti-Israel and anti-white comments and actions. in this case, Hillary was right. she tried to push after Russert quit. and the commenter who said that we would jump all over it if David Duke embraced McCain was right on target. so, bleeding hearts, let's make this a level playing field.
p.s. I am a lifelong Progressive Democrat, and with Edwards out of the race, I voted for Obama. I just think intellectual honesty is far more important than knee-jerk support of the perceived nominee.

and -- now that I can't get the image out of my head -- he does put one in mind of a testicle. But what ABOUT Farrakhan? Do you really know anything about him other than what out-of-context references and soundbytes tell you? I think many of you would do well to learn more about Farrakhan and exactly what he has done and said, particularly the "statement" Russert alluded to last night. I think you may be surprised.

If there ever was a man less deserving of the reputation as a hard hitting, completely researched, and unbiased journalist, it is The Tim Man. The other turd in the punch bowl is the self important and irritating Chris Matthews. These two guys contribute nothing to this society other than a lot of carbon dioxide...prime movers in the human effect on global warming. MSNBC outa get out of the news business and take Russert and Matthews with them. Throw in Tucker, and you got a real dung heap.

He voted for some free trade deals that he is accusing Hillary of supporting. For instance, the Oman Free Trade Act in June of 2006. When other members of Congress said it was as bad as CAFTA (some feel it was much worse as it enable terroist it occupy our ports). In addition, it had no regulations to improve labor standards for the people it affected-the people of OMAN. So slave working conditions okay in this trade deal that he and I might add Kerry voted for too.
He voted "yes" on this bill after saying one year earlier that CAFTA undermined the working person and the economy here. He also states in the legislative session before CAFTA was voted on pushed through by him and few other "dim" Democrats and Republicans in congress at 12 midnight on June 30, 2005. He also stated that he couldn't vote FOR CAFTA as he had a boy from Illinois tell him it didn't do any good to buy a cheaper teeshirt if he didn't have a job.
So I guess one year later Obama forgot about the kid that needed a job!

McCain vs Obama

From the Democratic Party..."Nearly 24 years after voting against creating a holiday honoring Martin Luther King, John McCain is spending today at the inauguration of Alabama Governor Bob Riley who is a member of an organization that has been criticized for excluding African Americans. The "Grand Master" of the Grand Lodge of Alabama admits he knows of no African American members among the groups 30,000 plus membership. [AP, 9/30/2006] McCain's push to cozy up to far right extremists is not surprising, given his contradictions in the past. In the 2000 presidential campaign, McCain reversed himself on the confederate flag first calling it "a symbol of racism and slavery" but then pandering the very next day by calling it a "symbol of heritage." In past efforts to pander to a far right base that doesn’t trust him, McCain campaigned in Alabama for George Wallace Jr., a popular speaker at a white supremacist hate group, continues to employ a strategist who denounced the creation of a Federal holiday honoring Dr. King as "vicious" and "profane," and even hired the man responsible for the racist ads against Harold Ford in the Senate race in Tennessee in 2006. [New York Times, 4/20/00, San Diego Union Tribune, 1/18/00; Associated Press, 11/17/05, Southern Poverty Law Center, Intelligence Report, Summer 2005; AP, 6/6/05; New York Times, 10/27/06; New York Times, 10/26/06; Union Leader, 12/8/06]"

1983: McCain Voted Against Creating Martin Luther King Holiday.

McCain Flip Flopped On The Confederate Flag, First Calling It Offensive And Then Calling It A Symbol Of Heritage.

McCain Endorsed George Wallace Jr., Called Him A "Committed Conservative Reformer," Despite Speeches to Hate Group (CCC).

Racist Ad Against Harold Ford Approved By Terry Nelson, Senior McCain Strategist.

Richard Quinn, McCain's South Carolina Spokesman, Criticized the MLK Holiday as "Vitriolic and Profane.

Now, what's all the fuss about OBAMA?

The dumbest thing about Russert's line of questioning is that Minister Farrakhan didn't "endorse" Senator Obama. Those who listened to what Minister Farrakhan said about the Senator knows the Minister made it a point not to "endorse" because he knew these republicans would try to use him as a litmus test like they always have!

The Minister just stated he admired the Senator for what he is doing and felt he could be the one that could unite the country.

Typical republican/conservative tactic to make a black candidate denounce another one. It's unfortunate that the Senator fell for it.
