McCain's Lobbying Scandal Defense Falls Apart a Little More

Since the NYT story about John McCain and Vicki Iseman broke on Wednesday, there have been two angles to the controversy, one of which clearly looked stronger than the other: 1) McCain's alleged romance with this telecom lobbyist; and 2) McCain's professional efforts to help the lobbyist's client. The senator and his campaign have rejected both points.

The evidence pointing to the alleged adultery is still elusive, but the evidence that McCain has lied about his efforts on behalf of Iseman's client keeps piling up.

On Wednesday, the McCain campaign said, in writing, that "no representative of Paxson or Alcalde & Fay personally asked Senator McCain to send a letter" to the FCC on its behalf. Yesterday, Newsweek reported that McCain gave a deposition in 2002 in which he contradicted his own claim. Today, the WaPo makes matters worse for McCain.

Broadcaster Lowell "Bud" Paxson yesterday contradicted statements from Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign that the senator did not meet with Paxson or his lobbyist before sending two controversial letters to the Federal Communications Commission on Paxson's behalf.

Paxson said he talked with McCain in his Washington office several weeks before the Arizona Republican wrote the letters in 1999 to the FCC urging a rapid decision on Paxson's quest to acquire a Pittsburgh television station.

Paxson also recalled that his lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, likely attended the meeting in McCain's office and that Iseman helped arrange the meeting. "Was Vicki there? Probably," Paxson said in an interview with The Washington Post yesterday. "The woman was a professional. She was good. She could get us meetings."

I think it's safe to say this is going to get worse for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

Let's step back briefly and set the stage -- during his first presidential campaign, McCain took four trips aboard Paxson's corporate jet to campaign events. Paxson company executives -- the ones urging McCain to intervene on their behalf with federal regulators -- had just ponied up $20,000 in campaign contributions. Shortly thereafter, wouldn't you know it, McCain pressed the FCC to give those nice Paxson folks the break they've been looking for.

And then, years later, with the pressure on, McCain lied about his efforts. And got caught.

I think there's a perception in many circles that the NYT story was a dud because the paper hadn't nailed down the adultery angle. Maybe so. But the article has nevertheless created quite a headache for McCain, for reasons that have nothing to do with any inappropriate relationships.

The appearance of corruption certainly isn't helpful -- especially given the perception of integrity McCain has worked so hard to sell -- but reporters seem to be waking up to the fact that the senator and his campaign have tried to deceive people. As a rule, journalists a) don't care for that; and b) perceive this as a sign of trouble, causing them to dig deeper.

HE has always struck me as a a senator who reputation supercedes his actual political sleeziness. I am thankful to how brave and courageous he was during his POW status. But he never has been given a pass from me for his dirty dealings, easily swayed political nature and his sanctimonious
attitude about any question of his honesty.
Now it comes out that the "straight talk express" is ONE BIG
PROPAGANDA train that he created after being embarrassed by the Keating/Savings and loan debacle.

It sounds as if McCain has over the years fallen into the pattern of Republicans taking money for favors. So what is new and different about this situation. He lied, would you buy a used car from McCain? And especially from a man who is to old and fidgety, think about who he is going to choose for his running mate if he wins the nomination, would you buy a Pig in a Poke?

McCain has been on the Sunday talk shows non-stop since his campaign started. This NYT article is not new news. How is it he has gotten a pass from the hosts of these show as he touts his anti-lobbyist rhetoric with his tainted past? Does anyone think he'll be confronted by Tim or George or Bob or Chris?

Even though the NYT might have blown it in their presentation of this story, I welcome any effort at transparency involving ANY politician and ANY lobbiest.
The fact that McCain has opined often about the corruption in the lobbying system just makes this story all the more juicy. However, let's not delude ourselves into thinking that other politicians don't participate. They're all in it up to their necks, and we pay the price over and over again.
For that very reason I applaud this story, and hope it succeeds in shining a light on every politician, Democrat OR Republican, showing just exactly how sleezy lobbying has become!

I think the above is so untrue it deserves a separate item and not a buried response to

the constitution is clear when it says:

No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty five years, and been fourteen Years a resident within the United States.

since the requirement is to be a citizen and a resident for 14 years it is clear one can be a resident born outside the US.

When you quoted this, ( "What you missed is the "at the time of the adoption of this Constitution." It worked for Andrew Jackson (b. Jamaica) but it doesn't work for McCain. As far as I know he wasn't around at the signing. (Unless of course he's one of those lizard people I keep hearing about)."
------------------------------------------------
To understand these provisions, you have to be thinking in terms of back then, as in the days when our Fore Fathers were writing and signing signing our United States Consitution.

What it says is that any person running for President would need to be;

-a natural born citizen ( born within the boundries of this new country ).

- OR -

-"a citizen of the United States" - which specifies a person who is a U.S. citizen, who could have been born in another country, but has given up his/her birthright country to become a U.S. citizen.

-"at the time of the adoption of this Constitution"
( So BOTH of the above provisions would have had to be true "At the time of this adoption". Which was the signing of our Constitution.

This provision kept the British Royalty, and any other Royalty, from trying to become our first U.S. President - right during the time of the Revolutionary War - as we were breaking away from Britain, since said British royalty would have had to have been born here or already been a U.S. citizen before the Constitution was being signed. )

-and has been a U.S. resident for at least 14 years. ( Again, likely to keep the British Royalty from 'claiming' that they'd become a 'U.S. citizen' just the day before the signing, thus effectively keeping them out of the elections :)

Of course, we were in the middle of a War with them to begin with in vying for our right to be recognized as a new, independent country called the United States. And there were huge worries about spies, and being out-gamed during this time, as we were breaking away from British rule. The Revolutionary War had been officially going on for over a year already by the time of the signing of our Constitution, and longer than that un-officially. And yes, the political "games" were going on in full force, with spies, even back then. The English were masters at political games even then, with centuries of experience at it under their belts. And our fore-fathers were rightly worried about being out gamed as they put our country down on paper.

-and be at least 35 years of age.
This provision may have had someone in particular in mind to be kept from running for our first President, yet it also allows us, in these days, to only have someone of some experience and maturity able to run for this office. 35 years of age back then was middle aged, one was lucky to live to see 60 in those times.

So, unfortunately, McCain can constitutionally run for president, he does meet the requirements set forth in this part of our Constitution.
What remains to be seen is if he gets away with hiding his corruption, or, if that corruption is exposed, will he be booed and hissed out of contention. Our government relies on our short memories to get by with this crap.

Funny!

I remember when we were trying to get our embassy people back from Saddam in 1993 ( think it was 1992 or 3, that was the first good look we ever had of him.

When he talked he blinked his eyes CONSTANTLY, and I thought, "he is lying, that is why".

McPain has been doing exactly that the past few days.

When speaking neither Hillary or McCain have learned how important REAL eye contact. Their eyes move back and forth, roaming, without making eye contact. It leaves their eyes empty of any emotion, vacant.

Of the two, Hill and Pain, Hillary is DEFINATELY a better public speaker, McPain is hopeless in that way. However Hillary is no match for Barack Obama, FEW can match Barack's oratory abilities, and there is alot more about him than that.

The more she tries to mimic Barack, mistaking anger for passion, or diminish him, words and speeches don't matter, the worse she sounds. Today she was downright SHRILL!

Please, please give us back the gracious DIGNIFIED Hillary of the last debate! I found new respect for her, it gave me hope, that was what public debates and discourse SHOULD BE.

Anger, shrill accusations are unnecessary and ONLY TURN VOTERS OFF and AWAY, AND *DO NOT ADDRESS THE IMPORTANT ISSUES FACING OUR COUNTRY, OR THE DIFFERENCES IN THE CANDIDATES*.

WHY THE HELL IS HILLARY ASSAULTING BARACK'S INTEGRITY and CREDIBILITY?

That is NOT going to WIN HER VOTES!!!! It only proves she is pathetic desperate and she has NOTHING else left to offer voters! We have all seen politicians do this at the end of a losing campaign. They figure what the hell, they have nothing else to lose anyway, they have INVESTED MILLIONS OF THEIR OWN UNTOLD WEALTH. Might as well throw some shit around and see what sticks.

REALLY PATHETIC OLD DIVERSION TACTIC USED AT EVERY LEVEL BY BOTH PARTIES WHEN LOSING AN ELECTION!

SHAME ON YOU HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON!!! SHAME ON YOU BILL CLINTON!

Alternet and the media/press need to do their homework and delve into how the trauma resulting from McCain's imprisonment and torture are affecting him now. Voters will need this info so we can consider how his having endured torture could affect McCain, if he becomes president and faces the intense pressure of numerous international crises going on at once.

Americans need this background info so we can make informed choices when we vote. We will want to consider the pattern of behaviors that make up McCain's repetoire.

To me, he appears radically unhealed from the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from when he was tortured in a North Korean prison camp. (How ironic, or maybe not ironic, that the subject of torture fills out our newspaper headlines, then).

The effects of his untreated and unhealed PTSD are all-too-plain to see when one knows even a little about this condition. Look at his outbursts of rage and foul language. McCain endured rage and shame-producing experiences that were profoundly damaging to him. Even today we know soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are struggling to get the treatment they need. How much less enlightened were they after McCain came back from war wounded in body, mind, and spirit.

After the last 3 decades of near-total Republican misrule and misdemeanors, many of us feel our own rage and shame at our impotence when we see our nation decline into incivility. Let's have some clarity on how PTSD, shame, and rage operates in the human psyche and go from there.

Why should lobbyist-politician sleaze redux,
be considered startling new, news?

McCain was caught and released in '89 for
less than stellar moral behavior, with his involvement in the Keating Savings and Loan fiasco. At the time, he wasn't considered a
keeper, so he was allowed to return to his school of slick sharks, and grow fatter and smarter, and not in a moralistic sense.

OK, so the New York Time's article may have
lost it's hot sex angle (usually, just an ad revenue increase gimmick, anyway) but it's rather obvious, don't you think, that this man has been sleeping with lobbyists, figuratively, for an additional 19 more years.

And, now he LIES about it! Forget this cad, his history is going to fall far short, of Oval Office immoratality and of course, that so often reached destination of late, immorality.

Good bye, Dubya. Goodbye, John, and good riddance!!

Whether or not the lobbying and/or sexual misadventures allegations are true or not, they're insignificant alongside the fact that McCain is a bushie stooge and a NUT.

Anyone who is interested on more background re: McCain's status as a"ladies man" or his involvement with the now (seemingly forgotten) Keating 5, (remember the savings & loan sandal?)need only to read The Arizona Republic's series on him from June 2000.

I highly recommend it! Among other revelations,he not only committed adultery on wife #1, a former model, who had been in a horrific car accident and was on crutches AND had gained weight; but met and courted darling Cindy, aged 25 to his 43 and married her in a year, one month after his divorce was final.

What a hero!

Obama is a mouthpiece for the CFR. Like so many, most likely caught up in the crossfire of all this massive, bureaucractic nightmare that is the US government/media/corporations today. Many, (NOT all), of our politicians can and are bought routinely bought out for special interests. Obama says "change" allot thus proving his inexperience or will to tackle some of Americas REAL problems. He is no different than the other rich, elitist, fake leaders that do not care about the American people, or the US Consitution.

Realize this fact too
Coke Bush

The revolution is on. Wake up to what has been and is still going on with our American mainstream media and their ability to keep us all uninformed, brainwashed, and shopping.

These globalist, neocon-type media faces and leaders like O'Rielly, Hannity, Kristol, and yes even Obama are all in bed with AIPAC, the U.N., overthrowing governements with the CIA, etc. and pretty much dominate American TV. They are all being mislead themselves or are part of it now aren't they?
