Swiftboaters for Hillary Clinton?

Posted by Steven Reynolds, The All Spin Zone at 7:12 AM on February 21, 2008.

So, are there any odds out there about whether some ugly rumor is going to pop up about Barack Obama?

Hillary Clinton's campaign failed when it went negative in Wisconsin, and here's a bet that each attempt at negative campaigning is going to fail in the future, even if those negative attacks come from the new 527 group formed to support Hillary Clinton.

As George Curry mentions today, andI mentioned one week ago today, negative campaigning by the Hillary Clinton camp is simply not going to work. Man, I'm thinking these folks should just get rid of the whole campaign staff and hire bloggers. They're clueless, and it appears they're now going to ratchet up the negatives rather than seek a strategy that has a prayer of working against Barack Obama. Some of Hillary Clinton's most well-heeled reporters are forming a 527 group to support her in Ohio and Texas. Here it is from the Philadelphia Inquirer:

Looking to boost Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's sagging fortunes, a group of Democratic political strategists has assembled an organization that will raise money from wealthy donors and run ads promoting her views in Texas and Ohio.

Called the American Leadership Project, the organization has been formed as a so-called 527 committee, which can raise unlimited amounts of money from some of Clinton's most deep-pocketed benefactors.

The group is targeting Texas and Ohio, the battleground states that hold primaries on March 4 and are considered Clinton's last best chance to keep her campaign alive against a surging Barack Obama. By law, the group cannot coordinate its activities with Clinton.

"We want to shine a light on issues that matter most to the nation's middle class , health care, freezing foreclosures, those sorts of things," Roger Salazar, the president of the new group, said in an interview. "Obviously Senator Clinton is a recognized champion on these issues."

The group, whose principals are mostly in California, has already prepared at least one ad to begin airing in Ohio. It does not mention Obama, but it echoes what has become Clinton's refrain that while Obama gives speeches, she offers solutions.

"If speeches could create jobs, we wouldn't be facing a recession," the ad's narrator says. "But it takes more. As senator, Hillary Clinton passed legislation to bring investment and jobs to struggling communities and worked to end tax breaks for corporations sending jobs overseas. Her economic blueprint is endorsed by (Ohio) Governor (Ted) Strickland. Tell Hillary to keep working on these solutions for the middle class."

Salazar said the group intends to keep its message positive.

I'm betting they go far beyond the positive advertising they claim will be their method. Indeed, this ad has some thinly veiled negatives within it. I'm betting the group goes far more negative as the Clinton campaign gets more and more desperate. The thing is, every single time the Clinton campaign goes negative, it is going to hurt them. Hey, that's probably why the 527 group was formed, so there can be a surrogate to take the heat for going negative. I'm here to say that won't work either, especially among Democrats and independents who plan on participating in the primaries. They'll see a 527 attack as one of the old school Republican-type attack.

The Hillary Clinton campaign is now bankrupt as concerns ideas that might turn around her fortunes. Officially bankrupt, though? I suppose that would only happen with the really disgusting kind of rumormongering Republicans are known for. So, are there any odds out there about whether some ugly rumor is going to pop up about Barack Obama? Are we really all that far away from such a situation?

Hillary Calling!

I don't know what magic Hillary Clinton proposes to use to capture all those votes in this State, but telephone calls at mealtime are just not going to do it. It may have been a little earlier in the evening when she called than when sophistocated New Yorkers sit down to dine, but this is not New York. This is Ohio.

Her taped call came while I was preparing the evening meal and was spoken in her best Hillary voice. She wasted no time, but launched immediately into her pitch.

Maybe I should have listened to what she had to say, but I think I have already heard enough from Hillary to know what she stands for. I've heard it for months now and I pretty much know it by heart. I know that she has voted for every funding bill that has come up for continuing financing the slaughter in Iraq and also that she is in thrall to ordinary American's worst enemies, the giant corporations that are destroying working Americans.

This is Ohio, a State that Dennis Kucinich calls home, so I know what a real democrat stands for. Hillary just doesn't pass muster. So I quietly hung up the phone and dished up the stew. I'll just have to find someone else to vote for.

As an Obama supporter, I did a lot of early research on him, in the process of choosing. Among other things, the Rezko affair has been plumbed to death by both the Sun-Times and Tribune (the 2nd to a much more limited effect). It's not been pretty coverage from what I've read of it over the last year.

Quite frankly, do you think considering the position the Clintons are in they would not get dirt out on Obama if it was out there?

They know the style, having been on the end of it for over a decade and a half, now.

He's not 100% perfect. He's done some things that weren't the best call. And yet, so have we all. As I said elsewhere, guys who have major skeletons don't work their butts off the get ethics legislation passed that makes their money trail easier to find, nor do they release their tax returns for public access.

BTW, why won't the Clinton's disclose THEIR tax returns? HillnBill admirers might want to be seriously wondering about that before they attempt trashing Obama.

VOTE OBAMA '08 FOR CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN

In the act of accusing Hillary of seeking to destroy Obama by way of illegitimate means, you become the very slimy character you wrongfully accuse Hillary of being. If the so called "negative campaigning" you're expecting Hillary to dump on Obama, "will not work," as you say, why the hell are you bothering to warn us against it? What kind of a simple-minded fool are you? You say that negative campaigning won't work, then why did you go to the trouble of making such a stink about it? If it won't work, just leave the issue alone, and the negative campaigning will hurt Hillary. The reality is, that your candidate is weak, and you're worried, that the brouhaha that has been made in media on Obama's behalf, and against Hillary, might not be quite enough. You're scared to death, man. Chances are, Hillary has lost this campaign, having had two opponents to fight against, Obama "and" media. The reality is, that you aren't worried about Hillary's negative campaigning, you're using this scam in an effort to further demean Hillary's campaign. If your candidate allows Hillary any leeway, she will probably win. That's what worries you, isn't it? You are simply part of a industry-wide media campaign seeing to it, that Hillary is defeated. You ought to go on network TV with your agenda. On network TV, no one has a chance to oppose the hate directed at Hillary. Here, they allow people to "politely" disapprove of your cowardice and treachery.
