Italian Police Storm Hospital to Prevent a Late-Term Abortion

Is this what we're heading toward here in the U.S.? In Naples last week, police stormed into a hospital based on an anonymous tip that doctors there had performed an abortion later than 24 weeks (the latest date allowed under the country's 30-year-old abortion law). From the NY Times:

[P]olice officers entered the hospital and interrogated a Neapolitan woman, identified in the news media only by her first name, Silvana, immediately after the abortion and reportedly while she was still under the effects of anesthesia. They seized the aborted fetus.

Carmine Nappi, the chief of obstetrics at the hospital, likened the police intrusion to an anti-Mafia raid. “We’ve had countless complaints, we’re a hospital, but never a blitz like this,” he said by telephone on Thursday.

Nice one. Of course, tests proved that the fetus was 21 weeks gestational age, and that the woman had chosen to terminate the pregnancy based on tests that showed a serious fetal abnormality.

This "anti-mafia" style raid comes in the context of a new attack on the country's abortion law. With the parliament dissolved and elections looming, conservative leaders are using abortion as a tool to mobilize voters. To Americans familiar with the elections of 2000 and 2004, this is nothing new: the right here has for a while now made contentious social issues loom large in order to scare voters (particularly religious conservatives) to the polls.

Digg!

Is THIS what we want to happen to women in the United States? Some busybody sticks their nose into this woman's private business, makes an assumption and then calls the police to come in and harass the poor woman. An already horrible day in her life was made even worse by the IRRESPONSIBILITY of other people.

IS THIS WHAT WE WANT TO HAPPEN HERE?

Already we've seen the anti-abortion crowd use terrorists' tactics - bombings of women's health clinics, assassination of doctors and medical staff at clinics (and even at home!), harassing women who use the clinics, etc.

Leave women and their doctors alone and let them make the decisions that are necessary and best for the woman's health and well-being. Stop compounding an already difficult decision and a time in womens' lives by forcing your own religion and morality on them. If you believe abortion is a "sin", then DON'T HAVE ONE! But don't stand in the way of other women who believe differently or are in a situation that the simplistic black-white worldview of religious conservatives simply cannot handle.

This is bad news for Italians. Most are pro choice (even many practicing Catholics), but don't seem to realize how bad it is getting. Even conservative pro-lifers had a problem with the police storming into a hospital and harassing a woman who just had an intervention. A magistrate has opened an inquiry. Personally I think that whoever authorized the intervention should be sacked, but that is not going to happen. The silver lining is that Italian young women will hopefully open their eyes and see that a lot of rights they took for granted are not granted at all. There has been an increase in the number of women going abroad to get an abortion or having back-alley abortion because clinics are understaffed or filled with doctors who refuse to perform abortions. While the law is clear, it is obviously not enforced. Doctors in Italy can also refuse to give prescriptions for the contraceptive pill (it happened to me). So, young ladies, here and there, wake up and smell the coffee unless you want to go back with barefoot and pregnant.

If men could get pregnant, abortion would be free and legal

Sounds like a typical feminist strategy for rallying the vote troops. The construct of the article has all the elements including the oh and by the way the fetus was deformed, I am sure it was, as are most post abortion fetuses, nicely blended. First trimester with fully supported evidence, I could buy into this, third trimester you need to pull the other one.
