Bush Appointed Judge Resigns After Cross Dressing DUI Arrest

And where, you might ask, was the judge going that night dressed that way?

That I find this story so hilarious probably says more about me than the cross-dressing federal judge in question, but as they say these days, it is what it is. The punch line is probably the best part.

Somma worked in private practice for years in Boston before he was appointed to the bench by President Bush in December 2004.

Yes, the fact that Bush appointed him as a federal bankruptcy judge does crack me up, but let's start at the beginning.

Somma's Mercedes-Benz E320 sedan hit a pick-up truck from behind about 11:29 p.m. on Feb. 6, the police report said. No one was hurt.

Somma, who lives in Newbury, Mass., fumbled in his purse for his driver's license before handing it to the officer who later arrested him, the police report shows.

"He had a difficult time locating his license in his purse. He passed over it multiple times before removing it," officer Paul J. Thompson wrote in his report.

The officer offered no other details with regard to the judge's attire or accessories. Nor would representatives of the Manchester Police Department or the city solicitor's office, which worked out the negotiated plea agreement with Somma's lawyer...

But lots of other people did offer those details, of which Audrey Hepburn would have been proud.

When authorities removed him from the vehicle, they said he wore a black women's cocktail dress, fishnet stockings and high heels.

But in his mug shot, the judge appears to be wearing blue eye shadow. Way to wreck a really chic look, Robert.

And where, you might ask, was the judge going that night dressed that way?

Somma told police he had been at the Breezeway Pub where he had one gin and tonic about two hours earlier, the police report reveals. He later said he drank two gin and tonics.

The Breezeway Pub, at 14 Pearl St., bills itself as "New Hampshire's favorite gay and alternative bar," according to its web site.

The arresting officer reported Somma smelled of alcohol, slurred his speech and fell backwards against the door frame while getting out of his car.

The Boston-based judge chose the bar in question, according to local rumor, because his wife, Wendy, was out of town and no one knew him in New Hampshire. Sounds like Wendy is pretty cool, though.

"I suspect that he will not be interested in talking to anyone from the newspaper, and I'm his wife," said a woman who answered the telephone at the judge's home yesterday. She referred media calls to Gary H. Wente, chief administrative officer for the First Circuit Courts.

Somma showed his sense of style to the end. He phoned in his resignation from a vacation spot in the Caribbean. If I were him, I think I'd just stay there.

What is it with these Republicans. Yesterday Robert McKee, the Republican delegate from Western Maryland with two computers full of child pornography and today this guy. Are ALL Republicans hypocrites. What has happened to the good ol' party of Family Values? I guess the watch word will become "If you see a Republican coming, hide your children".

Here in New Hampshire, that was a lead story on all the local stations. Funny thing is, none of them said anything about his attire.

I bet the arresting office said to himself "that's the ugliest woman I have ever seen. And fishnet stockings are just so slutty. I really don't care about the sexual fantasies of consenting adults, but dammit don't set yourself up as a moralist and condemn others for doing the same as yourselves.

this poor shmuck has made for himself. Maybe the cops should be watching Dubya more closely, for drinking and driving (rumored to be back on the bottle again). The hypocrisy of this Administration and the Right is hideous. But, then maybe Dubya would resign just like Nixon. Oh happy day!

As each Bush appointment meets it's own appointment with destiny, we as observers are definitely smiling. Every bit of hypocrisy, may it come back to haunt Bush for all his days. May the karma of Bushies come soon and hard!

Then he could have been himself. Instead he chose to pretend to a phony "morality" that claims righteously that the minimum wage is bad for workers, tax cuts for the rich benefit us all, regulating business is unnecessary, protections like the Bill of Rights are quaint and outmoded - decent folks don't need em, illegal immigration is a terrible threat - arrest em all! (Except for my gardener, maid, nanny and the cheap labor at the businesses I have a piece of.) Drugs are a terrible scourge - and everything in my medicine cabinet is legal. "Can I buy you a drink, pretty boy?" "God hates FAGS!!!" (Unless their wives are out of town - and BTW, I'm drivin.)

Hope the bastard gets prison time for the DUI - and I giggle my ass off every time one of these hypocritical a-holes, um, goes down. Eff him and (as we say in Texas) the horse he rode in on.

So I don't know what his attitude is on gay issues, and frankly it doesn't matter.

I just know he should be treated the same as I would want my gay friends and family treated--with full understanding that his preference, if it harms no one, is irrelevant.

Transphobic article

Is there any evidence that this judge is homo/bi/transphobic in belief or actions? And thus that s/he is being hypocritical? Not all Republicans agree with the party line.

The article obviously mocks the cross dressing. Transgender folks get enough bashing without having pieces on Alternet add to their abuse.

Nothing in this piece directly enlightens us as to this man's public, or even courtroom, attitude to gays, cross dressers or any other unconventional combination of traits. So the weasel sophistry used to justify attacking him for his private life is just that, and self-serving too. Does anyone know or care if he regularly sounds of about sexual matters? Neocons regularly make lazy and malevolent assumptions - progressives should know better.

No mention is made of the judges attire as to if it was colour coordinated or not. Did he had just rummaged through his wardrobe and throw on what came to hand or was thought put into his selection. Mention is made of his mascara but was he without lipstick. Now that would be something to write home about.
Reminds me of the good old days of Rowan and Martins laugh in. Here comes the judge!

Hypocrisy

What also seems hypocritical to me is the bait-and-switch approach that much of the left has taken on sex scandals when they involve someone on the right. It seems that in front of the mainstream media in these cases there’s been an eagerness for them to be perceived as conservative on sexual matters - having traditional values - in order to gain political points. In those outlets, you might hear talk of “it’s not the sex, it’s the hypocrisy,” but the liberal side is clearly eager to capitalize on both in the scandal. On the other hand, the political left and liberal pundits have also not viewed right-wing sex scandals as “teachable moments” to put forward, for example, San Francisco’s Folsom Street Fair as the “healthy alternative” to traditional values and as representative of the values that guide their lives. They also didn’t see the Foley scandal as a great opportunity to clarify what the liberal view is of “adult-child sex.” Liberals weren't, for example, going to the media and saying anything like, “first, let’s get this straight. This is not really a problem of an adult wanting sexual relations with minors…,” and then using the occasion to speak out in defense of the Rind study or write a column on “Harmful to Minors” which might seek to “help” the public understand that the actual issue should be learning to distinguish between when such sex is “okay” and when it isn’t. Instead, the left was content in the Foley scandal to act like such views never existed. So Jane Fonda might use foul language, but liberal politicians aren’t going to rush in to defend her and try to change public opinion about it, because they also aren’t eager to “educate” the public on where they actually stand.

George W. Bush as well as Ronald Reagan were weenie cheerleaders. Latency makes for overweening judgementalism. Sexual repression makes perverts and the fundys are great at it. So they have their share, one can say. What is the incidence of Democratic drag queens and toe tappers in relation to Republican? Are they both at the 2% mark or have Republicans far out-stripped the Dems? Are Condo Rice, Ann Coulter and Phyllis Schlafly closet lesbians? Oh, we of little faith.
