Berkeley Protesters Battle Over Generals and Genitalia

In that seductively hot mid-February sunshine that is peculiar to Berkeley, phalanxes of teens from nearby Berkeley High School wearing bright-orange World Can't Wait bandannas faced off yesterday against supporters of the US military. On January 29, the Berkeley City Council passed a now-famous resolution declaring the Marine Corps "uninvited and unwelcome intruders" for establishing a downtown officer-recruiting center. Anticipating last night's subsequent council meeting, at which that issue was to be revisited (and where the resolution was, by night's end, rescinded), a crowd that the Berkeley Police Department estimates at 2,000 roiled in Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park across from City Hall, on whose front lawn Code Pink had pitched a tent city.

The homophobic Kansas-based Reverend Fred Phelps was expected to arrive, but did not show.

Tempers flared as "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," "The Star-Spangled Banner," and other tunes boomed from a powerful sound system controlled by the pro-Marines side, whose placards included "Freedom Isn't Free: Never Was and Never Will Be" and "Keep Your Burka, I'll Keep My Clitoris." Now and then someone from the antiwar side - whose placards included "Stop Bush's Death Pimps" and "War Isn't Healthy for Children and Other Living Things" - would pull the plug on the sound system and the music would halt abruptly, so that all you could hear were the chants and the shouts. Antiwar protesters sang "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine," while some of the youngest among them engaged in screaming matches with military supporters.

At one point, for example, a high-school girl asked an elderly vet, "Why don't you take your old ass over there and fight?"

As a Veteran of the USAF 75 - 77, I know those pig recruiters are vultures they entice and sell, great sales persons. I despise them, came thru my computer on My PERSONAL mail to steal my daughter at the age of 17. I told them in no uncertain terms, I would shoot her up with Morphine, hogtie her, throw her in the trunk of my car, take her to a country witout extradition before I allowed them to have her. I traced the Internet path, they got the info from my F'ing Congressperson, I am going to kill him. Be very careful they will F$$K you at every turn. Fight them, always fight them.

Marine Recruiters/Elected Officials

I read the article about the U. S. Marine Corps Recruiters being Uninvited to have an office in Berkeley. How utterly asinine is that gesture of protest, especially in the city known worldwide as the city of free thought and social action. The Marine Corps is in Berkeley because they have expressly earned that right by their actions over the last two hundred plus years. They are there because they are ordered to be there by higher authority, to seek out those Americans that feel a need to serve their country to preserve the rights of others, to protest and to live as a "Free" people.

If one feels the overpowering need to rid Berkeley of Marine Recruiters, there is a better way to do so, and that is by making elected officials accountable, Federal, State and local. The seat of power is not with the Marines trying to perform their jobs under very difficult conditions, but rather with those elected to serve the people. There is where one can seek change---there is where decisions are made every day that impact each and everyone of us. My advice is "not to kill the messenger", but let your elected officials know what your thoughts are for the majority of Americans.

RECRUITERS ARE AIDING AND ABETTING WAR CRIMES

Recruiting is wrong because the war is unlawful and those involved in it are committing war crimes. Sooner or later every one who has aided and abetted these crimes against humanity, crimes which the armed forces are commanded to commit, will be held to answer for violating their oaths to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution and the international laws and treaties that have been made a part thereof.

The United States has been fighting and is now fighting a war of aggression, not to protect our Country against a foreign aggressor but to achieve control of the Middle East and its resources. Our armed forces are being used as hit men for the industrial/military complex, the neocons, and the fanatical right wing heretics, all under the control of a self-styled elite, a claim buttressed by nothing more than obscene wealth however obtained.

The Marine Commandants of the past five or six decades have permitted the officers and enlisted men under their command to be used for missions that have violated the Constitution, international law, domestic law, and the consciences of the troops involved when they had the right to say no to power.

Once upon a time I was proud to say that I had been a Marine.

By not fully understanding the entire history of the Marine Corps. One should read,(War is a Racket) written by Major General Smedley ButlerU.S.M.C. Who also was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. For all of the summer soldiers out there. Use google to obtain a reading of his book available on line. Then apply what the General has to say about war, and also who really profits economically from conducting wars.

My nephew wanted to go to cooking school when he signed up with the Navy. They promised him that but they lied... he had to fight for over two years to finally get one of his superiors on to recommend him finally for that service. They Lie Lie Lie. Then he got injected with the anthrax vaccine which is tainted and got a disease none of their people even at Walter Reed could diagnose...and of course even though he wanted to stay in the Navy they threw his butt out after 11 years service and of course only gave him 50% disability and he had to fight for the other 50%. He has a terminal illness now that keeps him from working. I am happy someone will do something. Congratulations Berkeley!

it seems as if all the children of warkill are in the data base of the government. my 17 year old son has been sought after by every branch of the military, i think i might have mind crippled one of the first that called and not to sure about the others and am probably on some damn list but i do not give a shit about that, in no uncertain terms i told them just exactly where they could stick their war baby killing machine, my mother would have fainted, god rest her soul. but by god the unmitigated bulls##t coming from the mouths of those that have to know what they are doing being in the military and listening to their comrades coming home with pieces missing.
man i am pissed,i want to see the bodies on television,no matter what that puke bag bush says, in full living color, guts and blood and gore. put that in front of the proud mothers and fathers that just .....i can say no more.
