Vermont Town Heavily Backs Proposal to Issue Arrest Warrants for Bush, Cheney

Posted by Adam Howard, AlterNet at 9:10 AM on February 6, 2008.

I have no idea if anything substantial will emerge from this but it's still a great story and a positive development.

Since Pelosi, Reid and the other Democratic leaders in Congress appear to be too afraid to hold Bush and Cheney responsible for their numerous crimes, the Vermont town of Brattleboro has taken matters into its own hands:

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. - The tone has changed in e-mails this Vermont town has been receiving on its proposal to issue warrants for the arrests of President Bush and Vice President Cheney. Now, more people are supporting the resolution.

Brattleboro's town offices have been flooded with 7,000 e-mails since its selectboard voted Jan. 25 to include the item on its Town Meeting Day agenda.

Some of the earliest messages received were so full of vitriol that town officials said they were worried for their safety. Some writers called Brattleboro a bastion of "liberal appeaser wimps" and "wackjobs" for even considering the warrants.

Really "liberal appeaser wimps"? That's your best line? Anyway...

Town Manager Barbara Sondag said any threatening emails are passed along to the police, although she said Tuesday that the nasty messages have subsided, replaced by ones supportive of the resolution.

Sondag's office is reviewing every e-mail received and the issue is taking up 60 percent of her workers' time.

I have no idea if anything substantial will emerge from this but it's still a great story and a positive development. Makes me even prouder that my girlfriend's from Vermont, the only state in America Bush has never visited. The arrest warrant measure says:

"Shall the Selectboard instruct the Town Attorney to draft indictments against President Bush and Vice President Cheney for crimes against our Constitution, and publish said indictment for consideration by other municipalities?"

Kurt Daims, 54, a retired machinist who's been a leader in this movement to arrest Bush and Cheney says:

"This petition is as radical as the Declaration of Independence, and it draws on that tradition in claiming a universal jurisdiction when governments fail to do what they're supposed to do."

Stay tuned to see what happens next.

I was reading about how Right-Wingers in emails had not only wished for terrorists to wipe the town and its citizens off the map, but claimed that the Right-Wingers would be canceling their vacations to Vermont.

Well, everybody. Buy Vermont!!

Maybe I will take a trip out there myself. Seems like my kind of people.

The moral deficiency of so many of those on the right is exposed for all to see when issues like this get national attention. Why do wingnuts hate our country so much??

Having lived all over the country and in other countries, there still is no place more beautiful and people more independent in their thinking than from this place where I was born and raised. I miss it terribly! Vermonters will never knuckle under to any oppressive style of government. The state will secede first and they could do it and survive very well. Pause for a question for wingers: which state in the nation has the most enlistees per capita now fighting in Iraq? Answer: the one that now has the most resolutions to impeach and arrest Bush and Cheney!

It’s such a shame and so frustrating that all you right-wing nuts can’t come up with any real, substantive kinds of debate. It’s all the same brainless name-calling, nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah!

But, to your points: Clearly, obviously, to anyone who doesn’t fit into the “there are none so blind as those who will not see” category, BY YOUR OWN WORDS, those Green Mountain Boys and Girls HAVE gotten something done: They’ve fed a good number of other left-wingers around the country. Lots of them, if the numbers are accurate, and you know, willy, that’s ALWAYS a good thing.

Many thanks to all you Vermonters for your clear expression of disgust and frustration regarding Stan and Ollie in the White House (apologies to the real Stan and Ollie whose idiocy was make-believe). Pelosi and Reid notwithstanding, arrest and impeachment would be sooooooo good for this country.

And willy, in reply to your flaming YES THESE ARE LEFT WING NUTS: YES, THERE ARE RIGHT WING NUTS also. But think about this if you can: "Righty tighty, lefty loosey." You see, when you turn a wing nut to the LEFT, it loosens. When you turn a wing nut to the right, it tightens. Which would you rather have done to YOUR nuts, willy?

They deserve alot of credit and the rest of us should join them. Complaining isn't enough. Most recently the 935 lies. That shoud be more than enough to get anyone arrested. ANNA

Outside those states whose majority of citizens' necks are red, none, methinks.

After all that has been learned about the cretins running your nation, those citizens with red necks or not still having faith in the present WH Admin need their heads read even more so than Dick and Dubia.

Hey Vermont how can we help to get impeachment to resolution? Many of us knew that once the 2000 elections came and went that we would be in a war, at some point. I think most all of us supported the Afganistan retaliation and started to cringe when the Bush Adm. and media started displaying the Arab world as incompetents who fought on horses. And then for no substantiated reason attacked Iraq.
As hysteria ran amok in this country, many of us believed the best course of action was to let the "chest thumping" "patriots" prove and test their theroies and beliefs. Well you got what you deserved: gas at $3.00 a gallon, an unending war, an economy that enriches the wealthy, lack of respect in the world and a very divided country. Congratulations to you all.
Now that more moderate type of folks realize the garbage trail that has been planned and strewn about has failed, our plan is complete.
Most of us have little tolerance for these lies and mistakes. The little group who still supports these policies no longer have any creditibility.People are no longer believing in your causes or your opinions. We just ignore them. Your views are important only to those who think like you, which is becomming less and less each day. If you need someone to listen to you, talk to each other. Most of us in America has no interest in your opinion. You have failed us and to those who are reasonable & moderate, welcome back back.

and tried to look into what products from this wonderful town I could order by mail, but did not find anything. I am not able to plan a trip there in the immediate future, but it is now a real possibility that spouse and I will visit there specifically to support these patriots in the future.
Could someone post some sites that sell Brattleboro products?? I am happy to buy cheese, jams, handicrafts..whatever.
Thanks!
PS I have written the town and their paper emails of support but always try to put my money where my mouth is.... hope someone can help me show my appreciation.

iN MY WORKING DAYS I TRAVELED THROUGH VT. FREQUENTLY FOR A FARM EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURER. I REALLY LIKED THE STATE AND MORE SO THE RESIDENTS.
I'M NOT A WING NUT, RIGHT OR LEFT, JUST AN REGISTERED INDEPENDENT MARYLANDER WHAT BRATTLEBORO WANTS TO DO IS FINE WITH ME. SITTING IN JAIL WOULD BE A FITTING ENDING FOR BOTH OF THEM (AND MAYBE A FEW OTHERS).

In another article today Daniel Ellsberg points out that more than just disgracing these two the proceedings would probably reveal alot about how these boys do business. It could be very educational, just like the last impeachment hearings where Americans got a lesson in the Constitution unlike any we ever got in school.

The President and Vice-President are NOT above the law, despite what they may claim or believe to be true. It's great to see a group of truly patriotic Americans stand up and call for justice to be served.
