If there's one thing that can be said about Blackwater Worldwide, the Bush administration's favorite mercenary company, it is no stranger to blood -- its operatives have caused a lot of it to be spilled in Iraq. Last September, Blackwater forces gunned down 17 Iraqi civilians in Baghdad's Nisour Square and wounded more than 20 others. It was reportedly one of 10 such deadly incidents involving the company in Iraq since June 2005. After all the carnage and death, Blackwater is now giving back. Not in Iraq, but right here at home.

This week, the company received an award from the American Red Cross -- not for its skill at making Iraqis bleed, but for Blackwater's recent blood drive, where company employees reportedly gave 264 units of blood. "That means that well over 600 lives have been saved in this region," said Georgia Donaldson of the Mid Atlantic region Red Cross.

The group presented Blackwater's owner, Erik Prince with a plaque, honoring the company. "I'm proud of the folks we have here. We have a great team, they constantly go above and beyond the call of duty, they give back and they're giving to their local community here," said Prince. But here's the money quote: Blackwater "saw a need for the community to receive more blood, so we made it available and our folks answered the call." Sort of like what they do in Iraq for Bush. Oh, and this blood must be mighty special. As Prince told Congress last year, his men "bleed red, white and blue."

This isn't the first time Blackwater and the Red Cross teamed up. After Hurricane Katrina, where Blackwater raked in over $70 million in federal "security" contracts, the company held a Red Cross fundraiser and pulled in $138,000 -- about $100,000 short of Blackwater's estimated daily take at the height of its Katrina operations. The keynote speaker at that event? L. Paul Bremer, the original head of the US occupation.

As for the recent blood drive, maybe the Red Cross should ship some of it over to Iraq for Blackwater's next victims.

Digg!

This country is filled with people who donate blood routinely and have for years. Other companies have similar programs in place for employees to donate. This is nothing new. It's a lame attempt to improve their image. ANNA

I know *I* wouldn't want any of their blood, which is probably infected with all kinds of evil, even if I needed it real bad. Hmmm.... Maybe whenever Cheney needs blood, this is where he gets it. This could explain the Dark Master's loathing for all that is good and humane.

As Anna said, this is nothing but a public relations move, which includes some twisted irony that is lost on the participants. Then again Blackwater is christian-right organization (check out the background on the founder of Blackwater), and much irony is lost on christians as they tend to not process information correctly.

they can't require Blackwater to give back as much blood as they have been responsible for spilling.

Their headquarters would be littered with empty corpses.

Now that would be justice.

If they were really serious about helping out someone with their blood donations instead of just collecting "PR quid Pro" they could have donated to one of the military blood programs in Georgia. Then at least, it would go to help the servicemen and women they are profiting from. You can find out about the program at www.militaryblood.dod.mil

Politically correct mercenaries.
Funny country !
Mainstream media entirely owned by corporate emporiums in an absolutely immoral conduct, who cry for freedom of speech, not agains those who have power, but specially against poor homeless people !
Corporate lobby firms (as such criminal conduct of active corruption was some kind of a respectable activity) registered and openly operating without their agents being put in prison.
And now this !
Mercenaries donating blood !
What will they do next ? Help old ladies cross the street, or take home the groceries bag ?
How can the Red Cross subject to such an infamy ?

Eric Prince, CEO of Blackwater, has just signed on for a book which he hopes will tell all about Blackwater and how nice they really are and how they're really not war profiteers. This should be a great work of fiction and I can barely wait for its publication. Maybe it will be a comedy.

Keep up the good work Jeremy! These gun-happy goons hate the limelight.

Want to know what pols really mean by privatizing everything? It's the only way to completely take away any citizen participation in the government.

Now it's the privatizing of the military, but later, it will be all public service sector employees including the Supreme Court that will be privately owned and operated. And that means they will have one ruler - the president AKA the King, Priest, or whatever the merchants of weapons and oil want to name him. We are already years into that not-so- secret process.
