Big Media Fluff McCain, Stuff Edwards

Posted by Phoenix Woman, Firedoglake at 8:28 AM on February 2, 2008.

Why is McCain so strong in the general? Because, thanks to the media, too many liberals, moderates, and antiwar people think he's one of them

Finally, much too late to do anything about it, somebody else last week pointed out what I mentioned weeks ago:

... But the mainstream media, long determined to ignore Edwards and keep this a feisty, feuding two-person race, is not letting him show his stuff where it currently counts--against McCain.

Thursday night, Tim Russert was oohing over how close a McCain-Obama or McCain-Hillary race would be: the latest NBC/Wall Street Journal head-to-head match-up poll shows McCain beating Hillary by two points and tying with Obama; Obama and Hillary each clobbered Romney, Giuliani, and Huckabee. When I saw that Edwards wasn't part of the six-pol poll, my jaded jaw almost dropped.

Though I shouldn't have been surprised. CNN also disappeared the former North Carolina senator from its most recent (mid-January) head-to-head poll--even though Edwards was the only Dem to beat McCain in its previous (mid-December) match-up. At the time, CNN polling director Keating Holland wrote, "Edwards is the only Democrat who beats all four Republicans, and McCain is the only Republican who beats any of the three Democrats. Some might argue this shows that they are the most electable candidates in their respective parties."

Why wouldn't CNN include its own previous chart-topper? Don't know. CNN wouldn't return my calls.

Interestingly, Edwards (with twenty-six delegates per MyDD's delegate counter in the sidebar) had been doing much better on the Democratic side than the also-withdrawn media darlings Giuliani (with no delegates whatsoever) and Thompson (with eleven) have been on the Republican side -- which makes the press treatment of Edwards explainable only if you take into account the corporate media's pro-GOP and anti-populist bias.

The latest Rasmussen head-to-heads now show McCain beating Obama by six and Clinton by eight. Other polls show similar results. The latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, conducted about a week ago, has McCain beating Hillary Clinton by 2 points, 46%-44%. This is a three point improvement for McCain, and a 3 percent dip for Clinton. Obama ties McCain at 42%, after having led him by 6 in the previous poll. And in the latest USA Today/Gallup poll, conducted two weeks ago, McCain beats Clinton by 3, 50% to 47% -- even though Clinton had led him by 6 in the previous poll. Obama loses to McCain by 5, even though he had led by 3 in the previous poll.

The latest set of national h-2-h polls from RCP are, when averaged out, slightly kinder to the Dems as they include the Dem-friendly LAT and CNN polls, but still show McCain edging both Hillary and Obama.

The bottom line: DON'T BE COMPLACENT. This is NOT a guaranteed win for the Dems this year. McCain is the GOP's strongest guy in the general. Period. (It's the biggest reason why I backed Democrats in Michigan crossing over to vote for Mitt Romney: So he'd stay in the race and with luck eventually win the GOP nomination.)

Why is McCain so strong in the general? Because too many liberals, moderates, and antiwar people think he's one of them. Rasmussen's polling bears this out, showing that he does a better job of picking up swing voters than Hillary or Obama.

We HAVE to hammer McCain hard, and hammer him often, to keep him from winning the nomination, or at least soften him up for the general. The best way to do that is to constantly point out how he talks "tough" but always falls in line behind Bush, especially on Iraq and Iran. Otherwise we're going to be in for a very grim surprise come November.

Digg!

McCain may very likely be our next president. And what worries me is that he could tap Romney, or Huckabee, or Giuliani, or someone even worse, to be his running-mate or to the Supreme Court.
And as far as his running-mate is concerned, McCain could teeter any day now.

You thought Bush was bad!!!!! HA!!

Bow down before your new masters.
This could be only the beginning of the Thousand-Year Fascist Reich. Better get used to it.

It was absolutely appalling to watch the media "disappear" John Edwards in the last few weeks, it was like trying to grasp at a "man overboard" and watch him drown before our very eyes.

I hope to great god almighty that McCain's artificially-charged batteries wear out in time to give Dems a decisive victory. As Joshua Holland said today, the two dems are so much more "attractive" than McCain. Too bad no one thought to play the "pretty" card a long time ago, it would have been real easy on the eyes to watch this talented orator give 8 state of the union addresses.

Evidently I have to keep repeating one simple fact: the economy determine's presidential winners.

McCain has a monkey on his back by the name of George W. Bush. He can't excape that. The only election in the past 90 years that the economy didn't determine the outcome was 2000, and George W. and friends had to steal that one.

Proof that the GOP is headed for oblivion is that Goldman Sachs is backing Dems big time. Rats deserting a sinking ship. The fraudulent economic stats aside, the US has been in a recession for the past 6 months. Even the dumber than dirt "values" voter isn't going to excape that.

...To finally bring down the DLC corportists who have controlled the Defeatocrats since the '90's - then so be it. I will not vote for either Clinton or Obama. They are two of the candidates on both sides acceptable to the corportists who are really running the show. McCain, Romney, and Guiliani are the others. If any of them win, the corporate elite win - and the American People lose!

I will be voting Green this Fall, for the probable Green Party Presidential nominee, former GA Congresswoman, Cynthia McKinney. She was an early victim of the MSM media-bashing machine, being savaged over a trumped-up incident involving a Capitol Hill cop. Her real offense is being a no-BS, truth-seeking progressive.

If it takes losing the Presidency again to take control of the Party away from corporate interests once and for all, then that is what must happen. I promise you that either a Clinton or Obama Presidency will not bring about any real, structural change, they are both so bought and paid for it can't happen. You want real change, show how unhappy you are with the choice and vote Green - for a real change!

If you look back over the voting congressional records for all the candidates you will see that the 'front running' candidates all supported Bush in his quest for whatever he wanted at the moment, despite what they say now. Please I implore you to look at Ron Paul's votes on The Hill. Dr Paul and Kucinich were often the lone 'no' votes. Check it for yourself. Sure his domestic stance isn't 'liberal' in fact he's a true conservative, like Thomas Jefferson was.

The only reason he's not a 'front runner' is because the MSM says he's not. He won the Louisiana Primary, took second in Nevada and criminal elements described by Bev Harris of blackboxvoting.org are still recounting the New Hampshire Primary.

Ron Paul will bring the troops home ASAP, delete the Fed, the IRS, and go back to a gold backed Dollar. He'll institute a non-interventionist foreign policy. He'll probably give Kucinich that Dept of Peace cabinet post he and Liz will flourish in.

Don't believe anything you watch on TV or read in the newspapers, it's all propaganda and disinformation.

Unbelievable that McCain could be considered a front-runner. He's a Media Construct. What a scary thought to have this very, very, very loose cannon of a guy in the Oval Office. He'll have us in another war quicker than we can blink because he's another loudmouth yahoo bully who doesn't have a clue about the world and its peoples. Sad.

On the bright side, with all the time bombs Bush has programmed to explode during the next presidency, the next President whoever he/she is won't be there for more than 4 years, if that.
