Muslimism: Questions of Obama’s Faith Are Really Motivated by Racism

According to an Associated Press story published today, Barack Obama has come out preaching about his Christian faith in the wake of a pesky Internet chain letter that tries to characterize him as definitely a Muslim and probably a terrorist in disguise. As the race in South Carolina heats up, Obama is waving his Bible -- not the Koran, mind you -- in response to nasty and false rumors:

"I've been to the same church -- the same Christian church -- for almost 20 years," Obama said, stressing the word Christian and drawing cheers from the faithful in reply. "I was sworn in with my hand on the family Bible. Whenever I'm in the United States Senate, I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. So if you get some silly e-mail ... send it back to whoever sent it and tell them this is all crazy. Educate."

Obama is referring to a debunked chain e-mail circulating widely on the Internet that suggests he is hiding his Islamic roots and may be a terrorist in disguise. It says he was sworn into the Senate on the Quran and turns his back on the flag during the pledge.

There are some truths in the e-mail's details. Obama's middle name is Hussein. His father and stepfather were Muslim. And he spent part of his childhood in Indonesia, a largely Muslim country. But he attended secular and Catholic schools, not a radical madrassa.

Both co-editor Trish and I have received the e-mail, and both from people who, as Trish says, "should know better." The letter is so mean, nasty and false that the motivation behind sending it can only be racism.

Sure, some would argue that the motivation is fear of terrorist attacks by Muslim extremists, but I would argue that it's a much older fear -- the fear of the black man, of the Other -- but in today's post-9/11 world it can masquerade as something else. I call it Muslimism.

Muslimism says it's OK to be wary of anyone in a turban or burka because they might be out to kill you, or better yet, kill all of us. They hate us and want to take over our country and convert or kill us -- every last one of us -- because that's what Islam teaches them. Muslimism provides a socially acceptable platform from which to launch an irresponsible smear campaign because the normal rules of engagement are off when it comes to people who are willing to blow themselves up to kill Americans.

So people who would never consider commenting on Obama's blackness are more than happy to criticize him and spread false rumors that he's -- gasp! -- a Muslim! And that's OK, according to the new rules of political engagement. An e-mail that, if the N-word were substituted for "Muslim," would shock the very people who so uncritically read this offensive letter and then sent it on to 10 more people.

And they could feel good about that because everyone should know that this uppity nig... uh, Illinoisan, running for president is actually a Muslim terrorist in a charcoal suit who can't wait to win the election and then turn our own nuclear weapons against us in the biggest suicide bombing imaginable.

Muslimism -- all it takes is that old familiar mixture of fear and hate.

they start circulating the story that he has fathered TWO BLACK babies?

What a loser! Instead of standing up to blatant bigotry he is acting defensive...

Somebody ought to tell him that if it is OK for him to be christian, than it is OK for others to be muslims.

race and religion

Questions about Obama's faith are no doubt connected to racism, the race issue that Americans are supposed to have gotten over. Although it’s not supposed to be about skin color but about character, race and religion still play major factors in American politics. Too bad. Because in an indirect way this issue makes Obama’s electability a question mark. Are the majority of people in America really ready for Obama? If polls say 90 per cent of Americans are religious it follows not only may they be swayed by questions about a candidate's religious beliefs when they vote but also by the color of their skin. It outrages reason, if this is true. But religion and racism and un-enlightenment have strolled hand in hand for centuries.

And it’s still irritating to see the continuing confusion over the use of the word madrassa in this article's quote, where it says "...he attended secular and Catholic schools, not a radical madrassa." Prefixing madrassa with "radical" assumes it's about Islamic radicalism when the word's traditional meaning is another word for school. So with that in mind it should be acceptable say some of the Republican contenders in this race attended far-right evangelical Christian madrassas. But that goes into the subject of multiculturalism in America, code for multi-racism.

Pointless

More out of fear than racism...

...but then again, what is racism? Fear of the unknown and ignorance, I would say.

But I think we need to ask ourselves: how did this fear come about?

There are many sources, but here's a couple of videos that I believe gives us a good idea as to where it came from recently...

McCain revealed as the real racist of this campaign

I would hope that everyone who receives that nasty chain email confront the person who sent it to you. I personally have received it 4 times already and have challenged the sender with the facts. Now I am an Edwards supporter, but IMO if you don't fight back against falsehood you are condoning the message.

It’s hard to believe that people would send on this obvious message of hate. It’s also hard to believe that people would send it on without checking the facts first. It’s hard to believe - but true - many people, even intelligent ones, seem quite ignorant.

Turban or Burka??

Kudos to you for using the exact same kind of inaccurate imagery to characterize Muslims as the people you criticize. As far as I know, a "burka" is the full body cover worn almost exclusively in Afghanistan, and when's the last time you saw a Muslim guy walking around an American city wearing a turban??

Not saying there is anything wrong with rocking traditional/religious inspired clothing (as long as it's their choice, and it almost always is, I'm fine with it) but those are the kind of "Clash of Civilization" code words people like the ones who created that Obama email use to alienate significant minority community in this country.

Also, FYI: If you do see a guy in a turban, he is almost certainly a Sikh, not a Muslim.

Hey, he is black, raised by 2 muslim men is now a member of the Trinty United Church Of Christ which deems itsself a BLACK church and has a "non negotchable commitment to AFRICA" (this is posted on THEIR web site) His mother was an atheist. And he was schooled in an indo.school between years 6-10. The public schools there do indoctrinate in the muslim religion and are allowed to do so.I don't know if he is a closet muslim or if he is a Christian. He says he is Christian (which should draw the anger of most who write into this sight)But I certainly have a problem voting for somebody who was raised by muslims, went to a muslim school for a few years, mother was atheist and now has membership in a church that is overtly black power (the current and long term pastor gave an award to ole franffenton;sp)and whose name just reeks with muslim. I would rather be safe than sorry. So label me a racist if you want, He WILL NOT GET THIS DEMS VOTE. E-V-E-R!
