Right Wing Furious Over Snub of Radio Host Who Called African-Americans 'Savages'

On Wednesday, radio industry magazine Radio & Records Inc. withdrew its 2008 Lifetime Industry Achievement Award to controversial right-wing radio host Bob Grant. In a statement, R&R said that it did not want the award "to imply our endorsement of past comments by him that contradict our values and the respect we have for all members of our community."

Grant is one of the godfathers of incendiary right-wing talk radio and has been an inspiration for figures such as Sean Hannity and Mark Levin. Glenn Beck often uses one of Grant's catchphrases -- "Get off my phone!" -- as a tribute.

The right wing is furious at R&R's revocation. Levin has written a protest letter to the publication, and Hannity is trying to organize a boycott against R&R's upcoming convention.

In 1996, Grant was fired for his on-air comments wishing the death of Commerce Secretary Ron Brown. But that remark was only the tip of his offensive, racist speech during his 60 years in broadcasting. A sampling:

Stating that he had been praying for the death of basketball star Magic Johnson, Grant implored, "Why is it taking so long for the HIV to go into full-blown AIDS?" [10/1/92]
"Minorities are the Big Apple's majority, you don't need the papers to tell you that, walk around and you know it. To me, that's a bad thing. I'm a white person." [Newsday, 6/2/92]

Referring to black churchgoers, Grant said, "I can't take these screaming savages, whether they're in that A.M.E. Church, the African Methodist church, or in the street, burning, robbing, looting." [4/30/93]
Grant onced claimed that the United States has "millions of sub-humanoids, savages, who really would feel more at home careening along the sands of the Kalahari or the dry deserts of eastern Kenya-people who, for whatever reason, have not become civilized." [1/6/92]
"I'd like to get every environmentalist, put them up against a wall and shoot them." [New York Times, 4/18/96]
Grant said that he hoped that President Clinton would "exchange bodily fluids" with an HIV-positive immigrant. [New York Times, 4/18/96]
Grant referred to former New York Mayor David N. Dinkins, an African-American man, as a "washroom attendant." [New York Times, 4/18/96]
Ironically, Grant praised the firing of Don Imus, calling his comments "idiotic and hate filled things." He still claimed, however, that Imus's remarks weren't as bad as what some "hip-hop guys" say, and worried about how "racial hucksters like Jackson and Sharpton" would be emboldened after the incident. Sharpton will be speaking at the R&R conference, which the right wing has blasted as hypocritical.

Radio Equalizer is indignant over the silence of many non-radio right-wing bloggers. "Conservative bloggers sit out controversy," notes the site. "Why?" Perhaps even they find it difficult to justify Grant's history of racist, homophobic rhetoric.

Digg!

Gee, there's just not much to say about this creepy guy; he's said (and saying) it himself.

I agree wholeheartedly. How can you 'improve' on that?

I was once riding with a friend down Commonwealth Avenue in Boston.

It was in March. Quite cold still. It had rained for about 3 days solid, and the drains were all still quite frozen. Maybe not frozen, but quite clogged. Anyway, I digress.

We approached a rather massive puddle, driving at about 35 miles per hour. Standing just adjacent to the puddle, was a young National Guard recruit, in his full dress uniform, with his back to us.

The traffic was heavy, a city bus came up beside us, and prevented us from switching lanes. a lorry was lumbering up behind, preventing any sort of fast braking.

(why do I affect this European spelling????it's almost as bad as my affectation of Canadian mannerisms, eh?)

Anyway, the driver of our vehicle, a very gentle and conscientious soul, began honking the horn, to warn the Guardsman of the impending disaster. Said action only served to get his attention, and make him turn around to "see what the fuss was".

Just in time to receive the full force of the spray from our vehicle hitting the six inch deep puddle at 35 miles per hour. I saw his look of disbelief, as the raging fountain of water soaked him utterly to the skin, a cruel and undeserved perq for his time in Boston.

To this day, I feel remorse and sadness about that.

I wish that THAT guy had been this bonehead Right-wing talk radio racist asshole, instead.

Where are the sanctimonious, self-righteous "heads" such as Al Sharpton on this guy? To tell you the truth I live in a very limited telecommunication world. I cannot stand anything and I mean anything even remotely right wing. Hence no faux news, no Hannity, Limbaugh, Malkin, Ingram or Coulter. Sorry to be so limited, but I just can't stand them. Now this guy I have to tell you I've never heard of. But back to my question, Imus made an uncalled for inappropriate remark which he apologized for and this guy has been ranting and wishing for the deaths and debasement of environmentalists, non-whites,women and anyone who doesn't agree with him for years, and no one and I mean no one has attempted to nail him.

Please someone enlighten me and I promise I will try and listen to other opinions than my deeply entrenched democratic, liberal, progressive views.

Like Shaun Hannity and Don Imus, Bob Grant is basically just a wierd-@ss freak. He is a person who for whatever deep seated pathology can't function normally in society and feels compelled to spew out his racist rants sitting in a room by himself speaking to a lone microphone. Like his followers he lacks the courage to actually speak to real people like he does on radio. Basically, he’s just a gutless freak.

Some of Grant's comments quoted above look like threats to me? He has threatened everyone from environmentalists to Bill Clinton. Why is this sub-humanoid still walking around free?

One reason, QQOblivion, might be because our outrage stops at this thread. If we practiced what we preached, we'd be gathering signatures for a boycott, giving his advertisers lots of guff for aiding and abetting the hatred spewing out of his microbrain...I-I mean 'microphone'.

I'm including myself in this; I am just as complacent as everybody else.

Well, up until August, he was in a small pen.

He got canned from his syndicated ABC gig twelve years ago, and had just a local show on WOR in New York. He failed to get much interest when he tried to syndicate that show, and went back to local until August, 2007, when he, for some reason known only to the demons in the bowels of the programming rats over at ABC, was rehired.

We ought to send ABC an exorcist.

Grant's brand of crudeness sells, today more than ever. But don't worry--the old fucker has to be at least 85, and one day he's going to choke on his own acid. Hope he's on the air when he does it.

They are furious? Wow! They can dish it out well though…

“He (Bob Grant) is a person who for whatever deep seated pathology can't function normally in society…”

“Then why is he still on?”

It must be because our society doesn’t function normally either. We’re turning into a Banana Republic the way we run elections, we’ll end up like Columbia where it comes to class divisions, only rich and poor, no middle class, and economically Bush has ruined this country so bad it’ll take a generation to recover from it. Meanwhile cretins like Bob Grant will multiply.

Don't we have Hate Crime legislation now? Where is the accountability in the FCC?
This is so appalling.
