The Al-Qaeda Wing of the GOP: Ex-Rep Charged in Terror Plot

Posted by Steve Benen, The Carpetbagger Report at 6:32 AM on January 17, 2008.

If he were a Dem and Clinton had appointed him to serve in the United Nations. I suspect the response from the right would be quite boisterous.

Oh dear.

A former congressman and delegate to the United Nations was indicted Wednesday as part of a terrorist fundraising ring that allegedly sent more than $130,000 to an al-Qaida and Taliban supporter who has threatened U.S. and international troops in Afghanistan.

The former Republican congressman from Michigan, Mark Deli Siljander, was charged with money laundering, conspiracy and obstructing justice for allegedly lying about lobbying senators on behalf of an Islamic charity that authorities said was secretly sending funds to terrorists.

A 42-count indictment, unsealed in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Mo., accuses the Islamic American Relief Agency of paying Siljander $50,000 for the lobbying -- money that turned out to be stolen from the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Siljander, who served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, was appointed by President Reagan to serve as a U.S. delegate to the United Nations for one year in 1987.

When the AP first noted that a "former congressman" was "indicted as part of a terrorist fundraising ring," Michelle Malkin wrote, "Any bets on which political party and which state the former congressman belongs to?"

Of course, as it turns out, Siljander was a Republican. (Malkin responded, "Oops.") [My mistake; the "oops" was in reference to a different point. My apologies.]

Imagine, just for a moment, if he were a Dem and Clinton had appointed him to serve as a U.S. delegate to the United Nations. I suspect the response from the right would be quite boisterous.

Actually I saw this this morning on Fox News and they were ripping him apart. It doesn't make any difference what party he belongs to, the US doesn't seem to prosecute anyone for treason - which this definitely is. We just seem more concerned with the payoff!

To add to this story, this person is a hardcore Evangelical!!!!!

I love how when a republican does something she wants us to "Keep in mind–both parties have flirted with jihadis."

I read this story yesterday but in that article, he was identified as a Democrat. I've never heard of him before.

I remember seeing him on TV in the 80s. I think he chaired a subcomittee on Africa and spoke out against sanctions in favor of "constructive engagement." If the current charges are true, his taste in dance partners clearly hasn't improved.

to go to the Michelle Malkin link and read the comments being made by the Repubs over there. At first they are all positive he must be a Democrat and are salivating with joy -- then suddenly the news comes that oops, he's one of their own, and suddenly it doesn't matter in the least which party he's in! He's just one individual gone horribly wrong!

In addition to supporting a terrorist funding organization:

From Fox News:
The charges paint "a troubling picture of an American charity organization that engaged in transactions for the benefit of terrorists and conspired with a former United States congressman to convert stolen federal funds into payments for his advocacy," Assistant Attorney General Kenneth Wainstein said.......

Siljander was elected to Congress initially with the support of fundamentalist Christian groups, and said at the time he won because "God wanted me in."

In all, Siljander, IARA and five of its officers were charged with various counts of theft, money laundering, aiding terrorists and conspiracy.

Aiding Islamic terrorists ought to be considered treason!

Will he now go to Gitmo? Or will he at least be tortured, held in isolation, and literally driven mad like US citizen Jose Padilla?

He would have if he didn't have friends in high places in the US government.

Michelle Malkin is an angry, ill-informed, Ann Coulter wanna-be little twit. She is a Bill O'Reilly in skirts and has about as much credibility as he does.

Expect Fox Noise to lable this guy a Democrat

Fox Noise has a habit of mislabling misbehaving Republicans as Democrats (eg. Foley,Craig). Expect that trend to continue.
