Obama Ties Hillary Nationally, Leads by 20 in SC and Gets More Secret Service Too

Posted by Steven Reynolds, The All Spin Zone at 6:38 AM on January 8, 2008.

It's also a good day for Barack because Huckabee is still growing in strength too, and polls show Obama creams him in a head-to-head race.

Great news for Barack Obama this morning, and it's likely to be more good news when the New Hampshire results come in tonight. The national poll numbers took a big leap upward for him, and he's leading by a ton in South Carolina. Hey, and they've increased Secret Service protection for Obama, too.

Its still early. The only results we have in New Hampshire are from Dixville Notch, and that counts, but just a little bit. Barack Obama got 7 of the 10 votes there on the Democratic side (McCain won on the Republican side). Perhaps this says something about the entire New Hampshire vote, but I'm willing to wait until the end of the day for that. Still, the USA Today/Gallup poll, the first national one since Barack Obama's Iowa caucus vitory, shows better news. From the Guardian:

Barack Obama has erased Hillary Clinton's once-formidable nationwide advantage and the two Democrats now are tied for their party's lead, according to a USA Today/Gallup poll released today.

Obama and Clinton both won 33% in the national poll, which was conducted after the Illinois senator's decisive win in the Iowa caucus, while John Edwards took 20%. The poll also showed Mike Huckabee vaulting to the front of the Republican field on the strength of his Iowa win, with Mitt Romney dropping to single digits after his second-place finish there.

The formidable bounce for Obama, who trailed the former first lady by 18% in Gallup's mid-December national poll, mirrors a SurveyUSA poll released today that shows him taking 50% to Clinton's 30% in the South Carolina primary on January 26. The two were tied in a similar poll taken three weeks ago in the state, where Edwards won in 2004 but now takes only 17%.

The surge of national support for Obama comes at the worst possible time for Clinton, who has often touted her nationwide lead as proof that she is the most viable Democratic candidate in a general election. In addition, the poll's 5% national gain for Edwards offers some evidence that his strategy of aligning with Obama as "change" candidates-thus boxing out Clinton-has worked.

It's also Obama's day because Huckabee is still growing in strength, too. The dream opponent for any Democrat is Mike Huckabee, of course, and while Barack Obama is beating almost any Republican opponent in almost every state polled by Survey USA, he's absolutely creaming Huckabee. (Yeah, the Republican love affair with the Christian Right is coming home to roost with the support of Huckabee, support that, if it is successful, will lead to a Republican losxs bigger than any in a century.)

What's interesting to me is that this is the time chosen by the Secret Service to increase their protection detail for Barack Obama. No, I don't suspect that action is a sign of the strength of the Obama candidacy, but I'm wondering if it does mean something. Here's the Washington Times:

Secret Service presence has increased for Sen. Barack Obama since his dramatic win in Iowa, amid fears over the safety of the man seeking to become America's first black president.

The Illinois senator's security now rivals that of President Bush, with a dozen Secret Service agents wearing dark suits and earpieces leading bomb-sniffing dogs through event venues, sweeping all equipment brought by journalists and flanking the candidate as he plunges into crowds of supporters.

"For many black supporters, there is a lot of anxiety that he will be killed, and it is on people's minds," said Melissa Harris-Lacewell, a Princeton University professor of political science and contemporary black culture.

"You can't make a prediction like this -- like he has 'a 50 percent chance of getting shot.' But the greater his visibility and the greater his access to people, there is a danger," she said.

Another black presidential candidate, Jesse Jackson, drew Secret Service protection because of violent threats during his campaigns in the 1980s. And former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell ruled out a presidential run in part because his wife expressed fears he would be assassinated.

Mr. Obama, who reportedly resisted asking for Secret Service protection but personally requested a detail of agents after friends insisted, has been under federal watch since early last year. No one will say whether he has received an explicit death threat -- his campaign said yesterday only that "we don't comment on security" -- but officials have tracked racist chatter on white-supremacist Web sites.

The Telegraph leads with the assassination threat, including discussion of a couple recent scares that turned out innocent. I am resisting the urge to wonder whether Bill O'Reilly has anything to do with this, but I'm going to conclude that I have no evidence that Bill O'Reilly has any connection to White Supremacy groups.

Hmm, I guess the poll stuff is good news for Obama, but I'm not sure about that increased Secret Service presence. It sure says something bad about the state of our politics in this country, though. Obama seems the least scary of these candidates, at least in the sense that he's doing the least demonizing of the other side. Heck, some criticize him for being too much of a Kumbaya sort of guy, wanting to just "get along," as Rodney King might say.

UPDATE: Obama is expected to win the very coveted Culinary Workers Union endorsement in Nevada tomorrow.

OK, so Obama's not a scary man. Neither were Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King.

at Waynemadsenreport.com he is reporting that Obama has two neocons in his foreign policy team. They are Dennis Ross, who represents a group called WINEP, who hosted Dick Cheney in October of 2007 as the main speaker, and Dr. Susan Rice, whose history reveals that she has a strong history of supporting African dictators. Also one of his main supporters is Zbigniew Bresinski, who is a big proponent of the SPP, which is trying to eliminate America's independence from Mexico and Canada. These are his chosen policy people. I don't see where change is supposed to come from. These are the type of people I expect the Republicans to use to get foreign policy advice. We can't afford to overlook this just because we are excited to have a black contender in the race. Obama supports nuclear power and has received 250,000 from the nuclear lobby. How hard will he push for new energy? Probably not very. His healthcare plan doesn't cover everyone. That's what we have now. I just can't get excited about someone who appears to me to be a status quo candidate.

Interesting. I'm uncertain what to make of Obama in terms of his politics. I went to his web site and read his health care plan and was unimpressed. It's more standard Democratic party line ( "more insurance is better" ) I think insurance is the problem. It is an evil scam which is destroying America. You don't need "investors" to earn "dividends" in order to provide health care. It's no wonder our system costs twice what universal health care systems do in other countries.

I'd like Obama to assert "equal protection" as an argument for some level of health care for EVERY citizen, regardless of their income, age, employment status or any other arbitrary criteria used to deny health care. You shouldn't be required to PROVE you qualify for health care; you should only have to PROVE you are a citizen. Everyone deserves the SAME level of government-provided health care. Equal protection.

Still, Obama has brought out the young people and that's a good thing. Young people are mercurial and could easily change their vote if given reason to do so. He is creating unpredictability in the race and I like that too. Keep them guessing! He does seem pretty "status quo" to me although one could argue that a positive future-oriented President who respects the status quo is exactly what we need right now.

It'll be an interesting election season, I predict.

Obama and Hillary! Hillary and Obama!

I watched several news programs last night, and when they talked about Obama's rise and Hillary's near-collapse coming into New Hampshire, what NONE of them mentioned was how Edwards also bested Hillary in Iowa. In contrast, on the Republican side, talk was about McCain's comeback, and the contest between Huckabee and Romney, the TWO following candidates. All the talk about what happened to Democrats in Iowa, and what it might mean in New Hampshire, was about Hillary and Obama, with Edwards's name conspicuous in its complete absence. I'd bet that if John Edwards beat Hillary by a mile in New Hampshire, we'd barely hear about it – and if he beat Obama, we'd hear only about how Obama faltered, not how Edwards prevailed.

I read months ago that John Edwards is the candidate that scares the hell out of conservatives/Republicans (who own most of the mainstream media outlets thanks to deregulation), so their strategy is to freeze him out of the public eye. What I saw last night is further proof that this is true.

Righting a Substantial Wrong!

Aloha oukou,

I have been watching and listening to all the candidates as they advance themselves into the role of becoming president of the United States with great concerns. With the ever looming talk of war and economic chaos, I suspect that the United States will engage in a situation it can not win. Nations of the world are fed up with the deception and false words of the United States government as evident in the Iraq scenario. As we know, mass weapons of devastating power was not found, therefore, the invasion of the U.S. Military and it's allies was false. The History of lies, fraud and deception runs deep within the U.S. Government and I suspect it Will continue to be so hence this letter.

The Kingdom Of Hawai'i has never surrendered it's government indefinitely to the United States of America as evident in the numerous documents sent across the globe of how, then Queen Liliuokalani of ancient Hawai'i, yielded her authority, until such time as the United States Congress and President set things right. The Kingdom was stolen yet, the unlawful occupiers - the United States of America continues to dictate and force its unlawful laws upon us the Kanaka Maoli of these sacred lands.

We have a King who is a good King. He has the genealogy, courage, education, leadership skills, charisma, dedication and love for all throughout Hawai'i nei to make things right from the substantial wrongs created by the United States Government. He stands for all that is good and serves not only the people but the very land and seas as well. He has stated, "Hawai'i shall be a light unto the world" and I, like thousands more throughout Hawai'i trust his words to be good.

Therefore, I support the Restoration of the Kingdom Of Hawai'i and our King. I further encourage the United States Government to sit with our King who does speak for us all and make honest preparation to return the Kingdom Of Hawai'i back to it's natural place amongst the Nations of the World.

To all the Candidates especially O'bama who continues to say "We, Us, Together," can make a new America where the voices of the people are heard... then to you I say, remember what you say and keep your promise. The Kingdom of Hawai'i is a sovereign nation and not a part of the United States. It never was. Nor will it ever be. I continue to say... support our King. Look into his eyes, hear his words and know without doubt that, he is a man of God.

Respectfully submitted,

Pi'ilani

Stealth Republican Hillary last; Plutionium Obama next to last

Hillary is a Christian Zionist corporatist; Obama is pro-Nuke Shill

Edwards is the only logical choice who is electable. he is best in polls against all Republican contenders.

There is absolutely no long term comparison between Nuclear and any other polluting source of energy. Why? The new Nuclear proponents are only short term thinkers. Can Asteroid miner and Nuke shill Comby take responsibility for the 146,000 year half life of the most virulently carcinogenic, Plutonium? Can the US government, the longest living Republic government in history (only 230 years) that has now come to an end, make any guarantees? They are absurd to ignore the fact that all waste and toxins of radionucleides are absolutely and unavoidably cumulative. They will raise the background radiation levels worldwide. Review the research of epidemiologist, Rosalie Bertells, MD, on effects of low level radiation. Death.

The solution mainly is a social one. Mankind must take responsibility for not confusing wants with needs. Energy use must first be reduced. There simply

As exciting as it would be to have a black president, my fear is that Obama is a man of his word. He will compromise everything away just like Hillary. John Edwards sounds like he means business. Particularly when it comes to American workers and quality jobs. The multinationals that control the media, and are in the midst of trying to break the Writers Guild, are only interested in profit. John Edwards, a seriously pro union, pro worker candidate, is being marginalized for this reason. But you get Hillary out of the way, and he could catch fire. Go Edwards!
