Bill Shaheen’s "Drug Baiting" of Obama Hurts Wife’s Senate Campaign

Posted by Jane Hamsher, Firedoglake at 7:10 AM on December 27, 2007.

I think the political lesson here is also clear -- some campaign tactics are simply best left to Republicans.

It appears Bill Shaheen's attack on Barack Obama is hurting his wife's Jeanne's Senate chances. From the latest ARG poll:

Shaheen (D) 41

Sununu (R) 52

Undecided 7

The last Survey USA poll, taken in November, had Shaheen leading Sununu, 53% to 42%.

CQ Politics:

Though the singular poll hardly guarantees success for the one-term senator, it was a major bright spot after at least six months of abysmal poll numbers for Sununu. Even the American Research Group had Sununu trailing 28 points behind Shaheen in their June 2007 poll and behind by 5 points in September.

[]

Dick Bennett, president of American Research Group, told CQ Politics that he believes some poll respondents were influenced by the Shaheen flap because Democratic voters, especially those supporting Obama, may have negatively reacted to reminders that the Shaheen family has already signed on to Clinton's campaign.

"Democrats get touchy during presidential contests," Bennett said. "And if you look at the breakdown by party, it would be closer if Shaheen's support among Democrats equaled Sununu's support among Republicans."

A whopping 93 percent of Republicans said they supported Sununu while 79 percent of Democrats pledged their vote for Shaheen.

Bennett warned both campaigns that if voters leave a side, one can't be certain they'll return.

Jeanne Shaheen is Chuck Schumer's hand-picked candidate, and she certainly has name recognition in the state, but she's hardly the most progressive candidate (the advantage on that front would definitely go to Jay Buckey).

It may be as Bennett says a temporary aberration, but if the moral factors of the situation weren't enough, I think the political lesson here is also clear -- some campaign tactics are simply best left to Republicans.

What state is this in?

It is pretty sloppy reporting if you don't mention what state it is in. New Hampshire is tagged down below the article. Is that the state? How would we know?

No further proof exists of Hillary's basic unelectability. The Democratic Party would be committing suicide if she became candidate (although this hasn't stopped them before). However, even if she wins, it would be a gloomy day for America with her basic pro-corporate, pro-war, pro-empire policies.

In this regard, Obama has cross-party appeal, and at the very least holds out hope of a diplomatic deviation from the playground bully style of both the Clintons and the Bushes.

Edwards has spoken clearest about fighting corporate power (of course besides Kucinich and Gravel).

In other words, Hillary must be stopped and only the Democrats can do so.

If we get Ron Paul, we better have a good Congress.

This story is a depressing commentary on the cancer of corporatism metastasizing in the DNC and Democratic party. No state Dem party should settle for anyone who endorses Hillary Clinton. Ms. Shaheen's setback may have little to do with her husband's drug indiscretions, but is most certainly affected by her abiesance to the Democratic Hillary line, lapping at the corporate trough.

Is there hope for a cleansing of insincere candidates at primary time? Perhaps we all spend too much time obsessing over the Presidential campaign and should turn our sights toward the Congressional races. Certainly no good and progressive Presidentential Administration is possible with a crippled Senate and House.

Shaheen a Blue Dog?

We Progressive Democrats need to not reject Ron Paul out of hand. Think of the obvious compromises that are required in a multi-party system like the parliamentary governements of Western Europe to form a majority. We may have at hand the best chance for the establishment of a 3rd party that the US has ever had. So lets look beyond the quirkiness of Ron Paul long enough to see the fundamental issue that Progressives (vs Blue Dog Democrats) have in common with the Libertarians. Civil rights are the primary value for both. Let Hillary and Joe Liebermann lead the Blue Dog Dems formally into the Republican party. Let Paul's middle and working class constituents find their true self interest and vote it.

Example of needed strategy:

Reflect for a moment on the loss of the longest running democracy in world history, USA. It is gone despite the best efforts of J. Edgar Hoover, Rev. Haggard, Ken Mehlman, Glen Murphy Jr. (see: for the out of the closet Republican policy of using gay marriage to discredit the clueless Dems.), Mark Foley, Larry Craig, Bob Allen, etc., etc...

Democrats need to understand that Gays are not a constituency of the Democratic party. Sexual politics have little, except for distortion and propaganda to do with partisan politics and the Dems need to dump its ownership of this issue. They don't own it. The Progressives don't have to take on each and every specific issue of the general concern; only the spirit of expressing humanity and love of life and one another. We make ourselves vulnerable to the repressives of spirit by letting the red flag issues dominate the political soap box. Right now we have lost the Supreme Court for any meaningful checks and balances and for even fair election guarantees.

We simply don't have the luxury to emphasize the hot button issues, re; gay marriage; its nothing but an embarrassment and alienates untold numbers of pre-literate working class voters who are trying to figure out how to vote their own interests. (Clue-not Republican)

There has been a bloodless coup going on and we are at war. Our last chance for an electoral reversal is 2008. We must strategize and it is very difficult when we have the Blue Dog Dems with us being led by a woman, Hillary Clinton. Love your enemy but don't give away the farm.

Consider alliance with Ron Paul as has Kucinich. Could we win an election with Ron Paul as running mate with Edwards or Obama? Better yet, Ron Paul for Secretary of State and Defence! His foreign policy mind set is the equal of any Democratic candidate.
