Karl Rove’s Book Gets Marked Down--Before It’s Written

Bipartisan Concern About the Dangers of McPalin’s Hate-Mongering
Emptywheel Firedoglake

A few weeks ago, word surfaced that Karl Rove was shopping for a book publisher, and was poised to make a cool $3 million. He is, after all, Karl Rove. He's The Architect. As the greatest political mind of the decade, his book is bound to be awesome.

Or so the theory went. In reality, of course, Rove's not quite the legend he thinks he is, and interest in his book was tepid, at best. One recent report noted that Rove made the rounds with of publishers with a power lawyer at his side, and quickly found that there would be no bidding war. An executive at one of the houses said, "It's very, very slow."

Rove ended up with his deal yesterday, but it's not exactly a blockbuster.

GOP strategist Karl Rove has agreed to write about his years as an adviser to President Bush in a deal worth over $1.5 million with former colleague Mary Matalin's conservative imprint at Simon & Schuster, officials said Friday.

Rove, the architect of Bush's 2000 and 2004 presidential campaigns and one of the most influential political advisers of his time, signed the deal with Threshold Editions, the imprint's publisher and executive vice president Louise Burke said.

"All of us at Threshold are thrilled to publish the book from the man who had the president's ear for two terms," Burke said.

One publisher was particularly uncharitable, saying Rove "doesn't have the personality" to land a major deal.

That may very well be part of it, but I think there's a more realistic explanation for Rove's book deal getting marked down.

There's no doubt that Rove has been witness to some extraordinary events, but his book is bound to be a dud. I can think of at least four reasons.

First, he's tragically dishonest, and everyone, everywhere, knows it. In fact, I'm fairly confident I can summarize the book now: "Bush was extraordinary; his critics were awful; and the media was unfair." There, I just saved book buyers $29.95.

Second, Rove had all kinds of dirt he could dish, but publishers realize that he's far too loyal a sycophant to ever make his former boss look bad. He's the original "loyal Bushie"; the idea of him writing a juicy tell-all is absurd. The book is bound to be hagiographic.

Third, Rove's genius has been wildly exaggerated, and interest in his insights has waned in light of his failures. In 2000, he pulled out all the stops to help Bush win the New Hampshire GOP primary, where McCain won by double digits. On Election Day 2000, it was Rove's idea to keep his candidate in California in the waning days, instead of campaigning in key battleground states. Bush lost California by a wide margin, and Rove's strategy practically cost his candidate the election. More recently, Rove's single recent responsibility was overseeing the Republican Party's 2006 election strategy -- and Dems won back both chambers of Congress in a historic victory. If congressional Republicans stopped taking him seriously as a credible political strategist in 2007, who's going to take his book seriously in 2009?

And finally, there's severe Bush fatigue. I suspect the vast majority of the nation, and even a strong number of Republicans, are anxious to see the end of the reign of error known as the Bush presidency. The idea of a fomer White House deputy chief of staff reflecting, in a sycophantic style, on eight years that most of us will prefer to forget, doesn't exactly scream, "best seller."

That said, I open the floor to a little game: come up with a name for Karl Rove's book. The possibilities are almost endless.

All good points the author makes about why Rove has overrated his sell-ability. But still, I would LOVE to get 1.5 million dollars for any book I write. I guess, however, that is only a pittance for a Republican.

How the right wing a-holes end up on best seller lists.

Their publishers make a little secret deal with the big sellers (Barnes & Noble etc.) The publishers get prime shelf space and agree to take back any unsold books. But the number of books placed in the stores is what is reflected on the best seller lists. Even if nobody buys the books from the store, the figures show that the book store has ordered them and purchased them for sale. The stores have risked nothing as they don't really buy them, and the publishers get exposure and a false reporting of sales. THAT is how Ann Coultergeist and Bill O'Lielly and old Rover get on the best seller lists. Through LIES. So What Else is new? After all, they ARE Republicans.

To be truthful, I cannot believe that Karl Rove would get one penny for his thought!. Who the hell cares what the lying, miserable little creep has to say in the first place? We all know that none of it is going to be the truth anyway and since so much of his own policies are tied into Bush, do you honestly think he's going to be candid?

I would never buy any book that anyone in this administration would ever write and I'm so sick of all of them, I'm not even going to put my name on a library list! So there.

Should Rove's magnum opus be shelved under fiction or horror? Maybe with Satanism? Fascism?

I've always found her to be the thinking person's conservative. She's just Conservative, not a right-wing, self-serving, blathering asshole.

She must be a saint to offer Blunderboy that much money for what's going to be a loser and a stinker.

I've always wondered how Mary Matalin and James Caraville can exist in the same house let alone the same town with such divergent views!

Amazing.

I do know that he is a man of his word and conviction in love of his wife. I was watching a Sunday morning news show and someone made a snide remark about Mary Matalin. WOW! They almost needed security to standby for the rest of the show.

Of course his anger was demonstrated through is extraordinary linguistic flair, but, I wouldn't have wanted to be that person who made the remark in the green room when James had to "stretch."

The fact that this slime bucket can't get a book deal is the most heartening news I've heard in a long time.

If I'm going to be optimistic about the future, I gotta hear more stuff like this! The man who thought he was going to steal ALL of America's balls now can't get anyone to distribute his Orwellian tales. Tsk, tsk! Said balls are clinging by a thread, but perhaps that thread is stronger than I think.

Please Karl, no more lies and bullshit and manipulation of the masses with your devious, psychopathic schemes.

Even the gluttonous mass media no longer wants the bastard. Goody gumdrop. I'm celebrating America's good sense for a change.

As I remember, I stopped watching television years ago, but with a head scratching, it has dawned on me, that I may never be able to
escape the odious laugh-track situation comedy,
that pervades our culture.

Who would've thunk ... ? Rove, prevarications,
a book. Natch? Yep!! Yes, indeedy, $1.5 million
is a veritable slap in Rove's face, or at least, he would see it that way (but will cover that up,as he is wont to do, easily), for I have no doubt that he sees himself, as the Albert Speer, the modern day Grand Architect of the 1000 year Neoconservative Dynasty.

Problem is, he chose to build what he thought was to be a grand house; but being in reality,
that the "Royal Occupants" were indeed so far
removed from reality - in some parlance, meaning
psychotic - that what was required to be drawn up, were blueprints to a castle in the clouds.

Poor little Karl, he was swept up in this maelstrom, and virtually spit out as wretched saw dust, and when the time comes, his klein buch will be full of blame, blame directed outwards, on all the "enemies" of the state, the obstacles to his, and his masters' great, grand plans.

This tome is nothing more than an expected fast ball - which spin will prove to be of no significance in arguable merit - where, if one just sits on it - even a little leaguer - will be able to hit it out of sight, where it belongs, and will most
assuredly end.

"Much a do about nothing!"

He has a long list of failures but he did succeed in manipulating the press, who never dared speak his name except to praise it, for the first 6 years. I don't want to read more lies from the smarmy one, I want to read the expose of his dirty tricks during his White House squat.
