Romney Parses the Words ‘Saw,’ ‘March,’ and ‘With’

Mitt says, “I’m an English literature major. When we say I saw the Patriots win the World Series, it doesn’t necessarily mean you were there.”

I had no intention of returning to Mitt Romney's Martin Luther King story yet again, but the former governor is just making this too easy. The last thing any presidential candidate needs, worse yet one with a history of dissembling, two weeks before the Iowa caucuses, is a flap that leads to embarrassing word-parsing, but that's exactly what Romney has here.

Mitt Romney acknowledged yesterday that he never saw his father march with Martin Luther King Jr. as he asserted in a nationally televised speech this month, and historical evidence shows that Michigan's Governor George Romney and the civil rights leader never did march together.

Romney said his father had told him he had marched with King and that he had been using the word "saw" in a "figurative sense."

"If you look at the literature, if you look at the dictionary, the term 'saw' includes being aware of in the sense I've described," Romney told reporters in Iowa. "It's a figure of speech and very familiar, and it's very common. And I saw my dad march with Martin Luther King. I did not see it with my own eyes, but I saw him in the sense of being aware of his participation in that great effort."

Oh my. Consider this nine-word sentence: "I saw my father march with Martin Luther King." As of now, Romney wants to parse the words, "saw," "march," and "with."

When the questions continued yesterday, Romney added, "I'm an English literature major. When we say I saw the Patriots win the World Series*, it doesn't necessarily mean you were there."

As Josh Marshall said, "[A]fter all I've said about his strengths in the GOP nomination race, I think Mitt owes me a little more than to make a fool of himself like this."

What's striking is how unnecessary all of this. Romney could have said, "I was a young man in the 1960s and it's possible my memory, four decades later, is hazy on some of the details. The important point to remember here is that my father was a champion of civil rights, and my values on the issue are very much in line with his."

But no, Romney chose a different direction -- one that includes debating the meaning of uncomplicated words.

It even came to this.

A spokesperson for Mitt Romney now tells the Boston Phoenix that George W. Romney and Martin Luther King Jr. marched together in June, 1963 -- although possibly not on the same day or in the same city.

Romney, according to one piece of written source material provided by the campaign, made a "surprise" appearance at a small march in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, in late June -- several days after King led a much larger march in Detroit. Romney spokesperson Eric Fehrnstrom suggests that these two were part of the same "series" of events, co-sponsored by King and the NAACP, and is thus consistent with Romney's claim that "I saw my father march with Martin Luther King."

"The record is convincing and clear - George Romney marched with Martin Luther King and other civil rights demonstrators," Fehrnstrom wrote in an email.

Yes, we're now down to debating the meaning of the word "with."

Romney and his campaign really aren't doing themselves any favors here.

*EDITOR'S NOTE: Romney is also very misinformed about local sports by the way, even though he was Governor of Massachusetts he talks about the Patriots (a football team) winning the World Series (which is for baseball). But that's just a side note.

Digg!

Mitt's back-peddling "in the sense of" being hilariously clueless

Did Mitt really claim that "I did not see it with my own eyes, but I saw him in the sense of being aware of his participation in that great effort"?
This made me laugh out loud. God, even Bill Clinton (who was one of our best presidents, by the way, despite his troubles) was more believable with his "'is' is" and his "I didn't inhale".
Mitt, YOU have got to quit all that inhaling you are doing there.

Well, not only is Mitt as handsome as Bill he seems to have the same word waffling as Bill.
I wonder if he shares any of Bill's other "habits".

Now that Romney has completely outdone Clinton in word parsing, I don't think we'll be hearing "what is is" isms from the Right anymore.

Thanks Mitt!!!

Let's all realize that today under the draconian dictatorial presidential decrees and other assaults upon Our Constitution and The Bill of Rights especially the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Bill passed by these ass-holes in Congress 404-6 and now in conference in our equally suspect United States Senate DR King would be a "Terrorist"..held without access to an attorney, with any Habeas Corpus rights or right to trial or even formal charges to address..

This just for as this stupid dangerous Bill states for calling for Social change..!

If Romney that two faced ass-hole hypocrite had one once of American blood in his veins and honored anything at all Dr. King, Martin stood for he would decry and condemn this dangerous treasonous Bill the douche bags in the Senate could pass at any time changing America forever..

Of course the same goes for Edwards, Hillary and Obamarama...

Don't vote you rights away America they've never been in great jeopardy in our history what with Presidential Edicts NSPD-51 HSPD-20, Executive Order 14348, The Military Commissions Act, FISA, Data Mining and now this complete betrayal of all this country ever stood for The Violent Radicalization Homegrown Terrorism Bill S.1959 in the U.S. Senate now..

Happy Holidays..

but thanks to the alternet video provided, i heard what you said, and i understand your explanation about grammar, but my instinct tells me from watching the video that you meant it literally--it was almost as if you knew it wasn't true. don't all politicians lie? but it makes me skin crawl when i see evidence of the transparency (one reason i can't stand to hear bush speak). this is the same shit that al gore would have taken heat for and did when he exaggerated his story, which many people do--that's not the same thing. i'm not looking forward to watching the republican candidates over the next year--how much crap can we take?

Mitt wasn't in MI 1965-1968

Mitt graduated a Bloomfield Hills country day school -- now Cranbrook Kingswood School -- then just Cranbrook School -- in 1965. His claimed memories of his dad are from his Sophomore and Junior years.

He got into Stanford, so we know he must have been studying hard in high school. I think he just got confused remembering his past. After all, he would have seen pictures of his dad at MLK's funeral -- on TV in France where he was a Mormon missionary in 1968.

Why hasn't the Right attacked Mitt for being fluent in French, like they did John Kerry?

Mr. English Approximately

Garrison Keilor is an English major also. He has many unusual things to say about that great fraternity. What is better than an English major? A whole nest of them.

After Senator Mitt becomes President Mitt, will he say, "We will not invade Iran and Syria or Jordan." And then might he be an authoritative English major, invade all three countries, and then say, "Well, No has many meanings and after all, Mandarin has no equivalent word so we also use this word metaphorically. Perhaps I also used it as a similie, such as in, 'No is like yes.' So this does not meet the academic test for prevarication so it is not, meaning not in the ancient Greek sense of 'really not Ari'. So we are modern English which is Republican English as dictated by the expanded Presidential powers of our glorious Mitt Administration."

Our dear candidate now has not the authority to tell us all to "go to Hell, I'm the one who tells the Justice Dept. what is legal", like George W. Bush; but just wait till January 2009. As with the Teflon Republicans in office since Ronald Reagan, the truth is found 180 degrees from the recited sound bites.

Stupid article

I'm no fan of the man but:

I can't believe this crap. Using the word saw in the way he did was perfectly legitimate.

If a reporter says that during the Bush administration Americans have seen their civil liberties destroyed and their real wages decreased, will you then argue that.

Some Americans are blind and therefore couldn't have seen anything.

That most americans might see the results of such actions but most did not see the legislation actually signed.

That many Americans are unemployed and therefore did not see their real wages decline - or similarly that some Americans are rich and experienced rising incomes.

My god, what a lying bastard of a reporter that would be!

Get real - this article is trash.

Talking about a football team in the World Series however IS pretty moronic, but he's a politician so what do you really expect.

Romney is fluent in French? I've not heard that. If it's true, then the GOP is making sure YOU and ME don't know it.

Romney is a Mormon? The GOP is making sure that the details of that religion are never discussed on pundit shows or in public.

Romney is parsing words like Clinton's 'IS'? It's irrelevant. This will disappear faster than a rat with a light shone on it.

Notice how incredibly accurate George Lakoff is. The GOP is capable of framing issues in such a way as to WIN EVERY TIME.

It's not okay that Kerry is a polyglot. But no one will ever know that Mitt Romney speaks conversational French.

No one is allowed to hold a candidate to a test of their religion. But all you have to do is scratch the surface of Mormonism's history to learn that it is COMPLETELY MADE UP. But no one's talking about it.

Finally, Mitt's flip flopping on issues is irrelevant, his parsing of words is irrelevant, and if you or me discuss this issue in a public forum we're the idiots, not the candidate.

George Lakoff is a genius.
