If you're elderly or have no credit? Bundle up baby!!!

For perhaps as many as 27 million American adults, keeping warm this winter will mean borrowing money and 20 million will use credit cards to be able to afford their heating bills, according to a CreditCards.com poll.

Nearly 12 percent of Americans say they will need to borrow money to pay winter heating bills; 9 percent will need to use credit cards to be able to afford their heating bills. The poll, commissioned by CreditCards.com and conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media, surveyed 1,004 randomly selected American adults by telephone Dec. 7-9, 2007 to gauge their attitudes about energy costs in 2008. A majority say they expect oil and gasoline prices to get worse in 2008.

You could always buy your relatives a heating bill gift certificate!!! Nothing says "Merry Christmas" like keeping Granny from freezing to death.

This is absolutely an outrageous tragedy. Congress just approved 70 billion dollars for the stinking Iraqi and Afghanistan wars. Not one dollar to help out these Americans. How do they sleep at night? And I blame George and Dick for all of this crap. They are free spending when it comes to their wars, but won't spend a dime on the poor in this country. The day of reckoning is coming for them, and hell will not be a sanctuary for them.

Most folks I know literally can't shell out anymore for food, energy, health insurance, and housing/taxes. They are completely tapped out. Frighteningly, the situation is about to get much worse.

Look at the facts: the price for a bushel of wheat is double what it was a year ago. The price of corn and corn syrup is up a great deal too. You can thank the government's short-sighted pursuit of ethanol on this (and since they've just passed the new energy bill pledging billions more in ethanol production, it's all but a sure thing that food prices are only going to get worse). Dairy prices are up for a myriad of reasons. A barrel of oil is almost $100. By next winter it may be $200. The cost of natural gas and electricity is up roughly 30% over the past 5 years. We all know the deal with health insurance premiums. When will it stop? The more apt question is, what if it doesn't?

All I can say is start thinking NOW about what you're going to do to stay alive and not go broke. Many challenging years await us.

Well, this time progressives may not be as lucky.
With right-wing pundits brain-washing the white male population, US&A will turn into a fascist state!

Big box stores sell oil filled electric heaters for about 37 dollars (12 gallons oil).
I have not needed a delivery since filling my 275 gal. tank mid October. November was cold, so has been December. The heaters been running every day. Turn the thermostat down to 60 at night and turn off the electric heaters. Turn on one heater in bedroom (low setting). Power bill was only 10 dollars more recently covering mid Nov - mid Dec. At this rate I will not need a minimum delivery until mid January. I am way ahead of consumption last year.

3 years ago I was paying less than $1 gallon for propane and now its $2.50 (New Mexico). Closer to 150%. I have option of going to wood and that cuts price in half.
