Harry Reid Betrays Dodd and Dem Party Base on FISA Bill

Fox News: 'McCain's TV Commercials Contain ... Out-Right Lies'
Steve Benen Washington Monthly

As Glennzilla says:

The summarized version is that there were two competing bills which Reid could have brought to the floor -- the Senate Intelligence Committee version engineered by Jay Rockefeller and Dick Cheney which gives the administration most of what it wants, and the Senate Judiciary Committee, which does not contain telecom amnesty and contains far more extensive oversight protections. Reid could have brought the bill to the floor using whatever process he wanted, and he has decided -- contrary to weeks of assurances -- that the SIC bill will serve as the "base" bill, meaning that improving it (by removing amnesty and increasing oversight) will require 60 votes, rendering such efforts virtually impossible. In doing so, Reid is brazenly ignoring the demands of 14 Senators -- including all of the Democratic presidential candidates -- to have the Judiciary Committee bill be the base bill.

Worse still, Reid is completely disregarding the "hold" placed by Chris Dodd on any amnesty bill -- simply refusing to honor it, even as he respectfully honors literally scores of "holds" from GOP Senators such as Tom Coburn. And while Dodd is interrupting his campaigning to fly to Washington to lead the filibuster he vowed, Reid has ensured with scheduling manuevers that the filibuster will take place only over the weekend -- when all of the members are away raising money anyway and journalists aren't paying attention -- with the intent to try to force cloture once everyone returns on Monday.

[snip]

Put another way, the issue isn't that they're failing to impose limits on the President. It's not even that they're failing to do everything they can to do so. The issue is that they are devoting their efforts and energies -- again -- to ensuring that the White House wins, its radicalism enabled and bolstered, and the people who support them thwarted in what they believe.

Harry Reid has been greasing the skids for the president while running roughshod over significant portions of his own caucus. Here's what's likely in play: Reid and Schumer twisted Leahy's arm to give them cover, or made a deal somewhere under the table with him. This is all about the '08 elections, the invisible hand of the Clinton political machine, the DSCC and the Village Donor$$$.

Meanwhile, Reid's office has undertaken a planned, careful strategy of deception through process dodges and contempt for base voters, not to mention the Constitution, consciously fogging the conversation with process talk, burying things on a weekend entering the Christmas break, while throwing up his hands in mock powerlessness and framing his corruption in a matter of "principle," that of Senate procedure and decorum.

Presidential hopefuls Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have all said they will "support" Dodd's filibuster. Let's hope that "support" is not of the phony "I support Ned Lamont" variety Clinton and Obama displayed. Tell them to put up or shut up here.

Otherwise, with all the unchecked and unreviewable domestic surveillance power Democrats are primed to grant to the executive branch, welcome to the Stasi State!

UPDATE: Digby points out another GOP hold Reid supported. It's a doozy:

"The bill would require the CIA to adhere to the Army's field manual on interrogation, which bans waterboarding, mock executions and other harsh interrogation methods.

[snip]

Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-S.C., placed a hold on the intelligence bill, preventing the Senate from voting on it while the challenge goes forward."

Lovely, lofty ideals you got there, Harry.

If Chris Dodd does not become president, he should be made Majority Leader. The only reason Daschle beat him out for caucus leadership years ago is because Ben Nighthorse Campbell voted the tiebreaker for Daschle, just before flipping allegiance to the GOP. Nice parting gift to the GOP, that.

Yeah, Harry Reid is a problem... in so many ways.
And as the "opposition" party AGAIN gives Bush everything he -- our master, the Fuehrer -- wants, the Dems will whine and cry about how the Republicans aren't playing fair. Yeah, the Republicans AREN'T playing fair. They never have. But the Dems got to understand that they are at least part of the problem.
And, yes, I like the idea of Dodd for majority leader too.

"Put another way, the issue isn't that they're failing to impose limits on the President. It's not even that they're failing to do everything they can to do so. How many more examples of this do we need to see before people stop pretending that the Democratic Party is some sort of opposition to the Republicans rather than the corrupt, duplicitous, accommodating Republican-lite party it has proven itself to be, almost without fail, since regaining the majority in both houses? If you have any doubts about that, just reread the passage I quoted, above, until its clear meaning sinks in. It is not that the Democrats are unable to push through their progressive agenda without a slam dunk majority of 60 or more in the Senate, as so many apologists for the Republican-lite party have asserted, it is that the Republican-lite party is actively colluding with the genuine Republicans to further the Bush agenda.

Got it? Good!

Now, consider what that says about candidates who claim they are the voice and spirit of genuine change, yet remain loyal members of a corrupt party that claims to represent liberals and progressives yet somehow finds a way to undermine the left while serving the right, however secretive or disingenuous their methods. Would real reformers dedicated to restoring Constitutional rights and responsibilities, ending illegal wars, and occupations, and respecting the will of the people sully themselves by remaining tied to and functionaries of such a party or would they stand on principle and demonstrate their commitment to same by leaving the party in protest and start a new, genuine opposition party, join a credible third party that already exists, or simply remain non-aligned yet true to what they say they are fighting for?

It's said that people get the government they deserve. People who continue to believe that the Republican-lite party is a vehicle for advancing progressive and liberal causes are proving that adage true, with devastating consequences for all, this year.

Harry Reid is my friend.

Remember Dodd's last promised filibuster?

It was the Mukasey nomination. Despite promises to the contrary, Reid hastily scheduled a vote when Dodd and the other candidates were out of town. Then even the final vote - 53 for, 40 against - was not enough to break a filibuster, not one Dem present had the wit or the balls to stand up and say NAY when Reid asked for unanimous consent to end debate.

When the rethugs threaten a filibuster, a bill is dead. When a rethug puts a hold, it is honored. I gave Reid every chance. He screwed us all.

I am so sick of the whiney, handwringing little wimp, I could PUKE!

It is time to face the facts: This government of ,for and by the people IS NOT. There are few {if any} who are nnot in there fro their own good.
Dodd i s in the pockets of the banking industry...remember, the "Sub-Prime" loans that were sold by bthe banks to private interests. The Banking Industry has pumped tens of billions of dollars into the system to keeping the stock mrket from going ka-booooom.
Self-interest is the order of the day.
So go INDEPENDENT and make a change.
Make a REAL commentary in the VOTING BOOTH.

i have written him and phoned his office repeatedly on numerous issues over the past two years... while i have always received a reply, they are generally boilerplate responses, employing lofty phrases of support for the foundations of our democratic republic with no commitment to action...

in response to my plea that he oppose retroactive immunity for the telecom companies, this is what he said: "I appreciate hearing from you, and I have noted your opposition to granting retroactive immunity to telecom companies"... i immediately responded that position was unacceptable, and now, today, the action begins in earnest...

And, yes, I DO take it personally

If the Democrats really care about this (or apparently any other) issue, why don't they simply remove Reid from his position as majority leader and put a Democrat in the office? Could it be that, with the exception of the lone Socialist Sanders, we have a one-party government like most tyrannies? Greens are now the most likely way to return to multi-party government.

if you are really concerned about government hijinx: gp.org. There you will find people who are COMMITTED to Grassroots democracy, non-violence, social justice, and ecological wisdom, not just talking about these.

Hopefully, Dems will come to their senses and vote Green. The GP needs Dems to support our candidates.

I have put a lot of my life's time and energy into this one Bush period. That bastard has this country so screwed up, the threads are stipped and the head has broken off!

Our country is so full of these type of Bullshit two faced lying politicians I don't see (not feel) any hope of a peacefully abiding country here is completely non existent. Safety and security in and by this nation is gone. Our own government chooses not home land security but corporate Empire security at our expense.

GIVE ME ONE REASON WHY WE SUPPORT THIS COUNTRY ANY LONGER? It's been over thrown. It certainly isn't America land of the free and home of the brave.
More like land of the dumb and home of the consummers.

Remember that ass hole Bush saying he's "...the compassionate President"? I want his head on a block!

Reid, Pelosi, Feinstein, Lieberman, Bush, Cheney, Rummy, Wolfowitz, Rice....God the list is long (and thick).

Man, line'm all up against the wall......They all have to be mentally deranged. Where is their humnaity?

There are over 50 scandals and counting, not to mention the 911 cover up and massive mismanagement of every facet in the Iraqi invasion debacle. Billions, yes billions of dollars are lost and unaccountable for in the war. Over a million dead from innocent children on up to those that are maimed for life, suicides, mentally ill...ALL BECAUSE OF THE BUSH REGIME, and not one person seems to be able to do one thing about it.

The economic model the US has pushed on the world has us in an unfathomable pit that our country is spiralling into, an unsavible situation. Today Bush is giving a BS speech on the economy, ha! Think the truth of our situation will come out?

As I write this Diane Feinstein has endorsed giving immunity to telcoms for spying. Only 10 senators where opposed.

I mean how much evidence do people need to realize this country is F. U. *. K.ed?

The whole damn nation is ion some kind of unconscious denial.
We need a miracle. But don't pray to God. He doesn't give a damn.

Let's just hope a rouge meteor decimates humanity from the face of the earth. Then Mother nature will take this eden back into her womb.

Why in hell do people want to live this way is beyond comprehension.
ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!

His efforts were successful (at least for now). I totally appreciate Senator Dodd's hard work on this and I support those in the Senate who stood with him. It makes me hopeful we might get America back???
