Has Huckabee Been Lying About Having a Theology Degree?

Posted by Steve Benen, The Carpetbagger Report at 3:02 PM on December 14, 2007.

Isn't it a little odd for a preacher running on a religious-right platform to tout a theology degree that doesn't appear to exist?

About a month ago, Republican presidential candidates were trying to position themselves as the best suited to combat global terrorism. Giuliani pointed to 9/11, McCain pointed to his military service several decades ago, and Mike Huckabee pointed to his ministerial training.

"I think I'm stronger than most people because I truly understand the nature of the war that we are in with Islamo fascism," Huckabee told the Christian Broadcasting Network. "These are people that want to kill us. It's a theocratic war. And I don't know if anybody fully understands that. I'm the only guy on that stage with a theology degree. I think I understand it really well."

Now, on its face, it's a pretty unpersuasive pitch. After all, how much could Huckabee have learned at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in the 1970s about 21st-century fundamentalist Islam? Probably not much.

But as it turns out ,the theology-degree claim may be more than unconvincing; it may also be false. The New York Times Magazine article that's been getting lots of attention this week included this tidbit (thanks to J.N. for the tip):

If young Mike Huckabee was ever rebellious or difficult, there's no record of it. He preached his first sermon as a teenager, married his high-school sweetheart and went off to Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia. There he majored in speech and communications, worked at a radio station and earned his B.A. in a little more than two years. He spent a year at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Tex., before dropping out to work for the televangelist James Robison, who bought him his first decent wardrobe and showed him how to use television.

Huckabee's a seminary-school drop-out?

To be sure, I don't care about Huckabee's theological training. More to the point, I realize that people, even presidential candidates, tend to exaggerate their resumes a bit. But isn't it a little odd for a preacher running on a religious-right platform to tout a theology degree that doesn't appear to exist?

National Review's Jim Geraghty, who took Huckabee to task over his swipe at Mormons this week, heard from a Huckabee campaign about this. Here's the email Joe Carter, Huckabee's research director, sent Geraghty:

Jim,

Governor Huckabee doesn't have a theology degree. He only spent a year in seminary.

Also, it's not surprising that he doesn't know much about the specific beliefs of the LDS church. There aren't a lot of LDS members in Arkansas; they comprise just .007 percent of the population (about 20,000 out of 2,810,872 people). Most Southern evangelicals don't have much exposure to that particular religion. Even in seminary you're not likely to study the LDS faith unless you take a class on apologetics.

-Joe

Fine, "Huckabee doesn't have a theology degree." Why, then, did he tell TV preacher Pat Robertson's CBN, "I'm the only guy on that stage with a theology degree"?

There are, of course, plenty of more outrageous scandals surrounding Huckabee, but it seems like a curious issue. Maybe some enterprising campaign reporter could ask the former governor for a clarification.

Digg!

How can anyone understand "Islamo Fascism"? There is no such thing.

"Islamo Fascism" is an absurd phrase on its face. It is the product of the fabulous Karl Rove spin machine. When his fellas were being properly tagged as the new fascist vanguard, Karl set to coopting the term "fascism" by coupling it with "Islam." For the average American who is no more sure of what fascism is than they are socialism, it works. For anyone who has any grasp of the meaning of fascism, in which big business melds with government to serve it own ends without regard to the interests of the governed, it leaves one scratching one's head if not laughing out loud.

So, it appears Huckabee's whole statement was a lie. He does not have a theology degree and he does not, and cannot, understand the nonsensical concept that is "Islamo Fascism." Two lies in one breath. Sounds like a natural successor to George Bush, alright!

Religious People in Government

Most people are religious (unfortunately) but anyone who wants a position in U.S. government should do their damndest to conceal their religious beliefs. Public Servants work for all of the people, not just those who happen to share their religious beliefs. Government is quite simple to understand in it's lawful functions. The primary function of government is an adherence to the Constitution. We have laws that cover just about all of human endevour. These laws were enacted by senators and signed into existence by the president and enforced by the courts. Hopefully, all U.S. laws are written with the Constitution in mind. The Supreme Court should always be vigilant in making sure that our laws are Constitutional.

We (The People) need no religionists administering our nation according to their particular religious beliefs.

We've got a "Christian" president whose God has told him to invade Iraq. Either our current president is lying about being a Christian or his God was as ignorant as he was about WMDs in Iraq. In either case, religion has no place in executive decision making. All decisions should be made solely on Constitutional merit. To do otherwise makes us a nation of men and not laws. Ignorant, evil men, at that...

There is a web site that you can access to find out who you should vote for. Someone else isn't going to tell you who you should vote for. Not the media. Not the candidates. Not your friends or neighbors.

You're going to tell yourself who you should vote for!

The site lists two dozen of the current issues in society today, like waterboarding, gun control, immigration, abortion, health care, troop withdrawal. And the site has all the candidates and their stands on the 24 issues stored in its database – Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, Independents, etc.

It's called "www.vajoe.com/candidate_calculator"

Which 2008 presidential candidate agrees with you, and you with the candidate? Just answer the questions to find the 2008 presidential candidate that best aligns with your personal beliefs.

Mark the column for Yes if you support the issue and No if you oppose it. After that, select how important the topic is to you. If you are unsure or have no opinion on a topic, just mark the Unsure column. You will be scored based upon how well you match the current views of each of the 2008 presidential candidates. It's very easy.

The results will probably amaze and surprise you! It will certainly enlighten you.

Does Huckabee understand Christio-Fascism?

Certainly the Fascists in this administration are working hard to strap the label of Christianity to their unbridled power grab. Most of the Republican Presidential candidates come bearing plastic crosses as well, but none more than Huckabee.

Our government today resembles Fascist states of the thirties to a frightening degree, while declaring its Christianity and moral superiority at every turn. Even more frighteningly, the administration is still consolidating power by steamrolling a "Godless" Democratic majority in congress.

Does Huckabee give Christianity an exemption from collaboration with totalitarian regimes? If so, the history of the church must have been in the courses he missed after he dropped out.

This is just too perfect, they can't even get their corrections right:

" (Joe Carter, Huckabee's research director): There aren't a lot of LDS members in Arkansas; they comprise just .007 percent of the population (about 20,000 out of 2,810,872 people). "

If we do the math, we find out that it's actually just over 0.7 percent (not .007 percent). And this is his research director ? I guess the science and math standards in Arkansas aren't that high :)

If Huckaboob has a theology degree or not? He's a flake and completely unfit for ANY position of leadership, let alone the presidency.

The Clinton Connection
Posted by: angelofdeath on Dec 15, 2007 2:06 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
THE TORRES-VIGNALI CONNECTION is explored in detail in a congressional report that resulted from Pardongate, when revelations surfaced that President Clinton granted clemency for Carlos Vignali Jr. — convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to 15 years in federal prison in 1995 — along with other convicted criminals and one-time international fugitive Marc Rich. The granting of clemency occurred after payments were made to Clinton’s brother-in-law, Hugh Rodham, the brother of former first lady, New York state senator and 2008 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Released in March 2002 by the congressional Committee on Government Reform, “Justice Undone: Clemency Decisions in the Clinton White House” details Hugh Rodham’s involvement in the Vignali affair, as well as the long business history Vignali once shared with George Torres.

The report takes to task top L.A. elected officials, including county Supervisor Gloria Molina, then–state Senator Richard Polanco, then–state Assemblyman Antonio Villaraigosa and U.S. Representative Xavier Becerra, among others, for lobbying on behalf of Vignali Jr., in light of his drug conviction and the fact that DEA agents long suspected Vignali Sr. to be involved in drug trafficking — along with Torres. While a member of the California state Assembly, Villaraigosa wrote the first letter on Vignali’s behalf on May 24, 1996.

Saying Hillary Rodham Clinton was a leader who offered a new path, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa today formally endorsed the New York senator and former first lady in her race to become president of the United States.

Villaraigosa will also serve as one of the four national chairs of Clinton’s campaign for the Democratic nomination for president, it was announced.

At a televised news conference from the UCLA campus in Westwood, Villaraigosa praised Clinton’s approach to domestic issues, particularly education, and her pledge to help end the war in Iraq. The pair earlier toured the preschool at UCLA’s Krieger Center. — La Times

opportunistic fascists

A few thoughts:
1. The Republican party leadership has been attracting and developing opportunists for years and has reached critical mass. Opportunists are those whose talents are mostly socio-pathic: they will say whatever apears most helpful to achieve their ends. Their only interest in "truth" is the PR value of what can be accomplished with spin. Yes they are fascists.
2. Fascists are those who value the ends above the means - often without appropriate regard even for PR. They are extremely efficient at the expense of humanity's values. They may be materialists (corporate) or religionists. Why complicate or restrict it?

Please find a way to solve our national crisis. Please put your pet peeve issues on hold for our greater good?

Ever notice how small Hickabee's head is in proportion to the rest of his body? He looks like he was kidnapped and held for some time by an Aztec witch doctor who starting the head-shrinking thing but couldn't quite finish cause God snatched Hick away cause He had big plans for such a smart lad. Or maybe Mike just ate too many catfish from the pond right next to the chemical factory down there in Ozarkville or wherever. And by the way, why is it that politicians who say they don't believe in evolution all look like the Missing Link? Voila!!! We HAVE found the missing link and his name is Mike!

...a theology degree makes Huckabee an expert on the Middle East, when there are fewer Jews (about 2,000, according to the 1995 American Jewish Year Book.) than there are Mormons (20,000, according to Huckabee's aide), and you can't even find a statistic on Muslims in Arkansas? If he knows little about Mormons, he must know nothing about Jews or Muslims.

SCARY THOUGHT FOR THE DAY #42:
Huckabee and Guiliani have nothing for the economy compared with Romney's business and economic acumen. Will you still be complaining about Romney's faith when they lay you off and foreclose your home? Get real, and don't get me started about Huckabee as a foreign policy disaster. Huckabee and Ahmadinejad sitting across at a table???? That's classic, what a nightmare.

Take all of the t-shirts mocking Bush you see at the mall and insert Huckabee's face. That's what college kids may be wearing until 2012. Bush haters are going to LOVE Huckabee, what a goober...there's a good image for the Republican stigma. Are you kidding me??

Why don't we all vote for an inferior candidate merely because he's not LDS. Evangelicals are going to ruin this nation...Piss off!!
