I wonder who Time's Person of the Year will be, Michael Vick?

Yes, yes, I understand the concept here. But still, putting the words "Gonzales" and "Lawyer of the Year" together makes me throw up a little in my mouth:

Negative news coverage may have cost former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales his job, but it won him a dubious honor Wednesday from a magazine published by the American Bar Association: Lawyer of the Year.

I wonder if he'll recall getting it.

The monthly magazine gave the awards to lawyers who made the most news, said editor and publisher Edward A. Adams.

"Think about Time magazine's Person of the Year," Adams said in an interview. "In years past they've named people like Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin. So we're not suggesting by these awards that these are the best lawyers in any sense of the word. We are saying they are the most newsworthy -- and perhaps also the best."

Comparing our former Attorney General to Hitler and Stalin is so reassuring. How proud we should be! On the upside, Gonzo probably won't recognize those names and will continue his restful stay in Hotel Oblivion.

Other high-profile lawyers that were nominated for the distinction included Goodling, the Justice Department's liaison to the White House who quit in April amid the political firestorm; I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff who was convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice in the investigation into the leaked identity of former CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson; and U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, the top prosecutor in Chicago who won the case against Libby.

It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game. Or is it, how you game the system?

I wonder who Time's Person of the Year will be, Michael Vick?

Around the time that the US and Great Britain invaded Iraq they were briefly considered for nomination, the assumption being that the people of Iraq would be liberated. Turns out that was not the plan.It was a news item for a short time. It seemed absurd to me then. The plan turned out to be for occupation which is not usually about 'peace'. Thanks, ANNA

I think the ABA meant to say that Alberto Gonzales is LOSER of the Year

It's an inverted contest.

Considering what the population thinks of attorneys, I doubt that "Lawyer of the Year" is an award; it may very well be closer to an acknowledgement of which previously over-hyped personality occupies the bottom of the list.

I know these sort of stories are great fun, but my Weird-Shit-O-Meter just over-loaded and caught fire!

Lawyer of the freakin' year???!!!???? You said the phrase "Lawyer of the year"? And included it with the name "Alberto Gonzales" in the same sentence without a negative adverb? Drag your proofreader out into the street, and shoot him!

Holy SHIT!!!! Naming Alberto Gonzales "Lawyer of the Year" is like the NAACP giving a "Man of the Year" award to George Wallace! YOU CAN'T DO SHIT LIKE THAT!!!!! It throws the whole space-time continuum thing off, and all sorts of weird shit starts to happen! And I grew up in the sixties, I've seen some WEIRD SHIT, and know it when I see it!*sigh*

Well! Guess there's nothing else for it! Go to go down to the cave in the holler,, and pick me some of those mushrooms! The fun little white ones that made the lawn furniture run away! Yes, I think the little white ones will do nicely!

I dropped out of the Nashville Songwriters Association when a song with a hi-jacked melody won "Song of the Year" honors by vote of the membership. Seems the voting rules were to vote for the most successful song of the year. Financially it was a huge success - but the plagiarising composer disappeared into song writing history without another hit. "You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma," borrowed its melody from "Rocky Top" without permission. Another qualifier for the award was "Vote for the song you wish you had written." I guess they all wished they had stolen that melody?
