Huckabee Thinks Women Should "Graciously Submit" to Their Husbands

You've already probably got a long list of reasons why you think Mike Huckabee is way too scary to vote for, but just in case you need another one:

"In August of 1998, Huckabee was one of 131 signatories to a full page USA Today Ad which declared: "I affirm the statement on the family issued by the 1998 Southern Baptist Convention." What was in the family statement from the SBC? "A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ."

The ad wasn't just a blanket, "we support the SBC statement," but rather highlighted details. The ad Huckabee signed specifically said of the SBC family statement: "You are right because you called wives to graciously submit to their husband's sacrificial leadership."

UPDATE via GottaLaff: Huckabee Trails All Leading Democrats

Huck's in the muck and outta luck:

Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee has gone from being a virtual unknown to being in a virtual tie with Rudy Giuliani in recent poll results.

Despite Huckabee's surge to the front of the GOP pack, a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll released Tuesday shows that Huckabee would lose in a head-to-head match up with Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, or John Edwards.

I guess people just won't fall in line with someone who wants to isolate AIDS patients, thinks abortion is on par with the Holocaust, is unaware of blockbuster intel, and believes in faith-based parole of convicted rapists.

He also thinks that women who become pregnant through rape and/or incest shouldn't be able to get an abortion. That says it all--

Anyone who believes that others should submit to them should find themselves beholden to others. Then let's see how fair they think it is. This guy should be taken out behind the tool shed and...(given a stern lecture??).

Are you sure this Mike Huckabee, 2007 and not another Mike who lived 4000 years ago in 2007 BC or perhaps a cannibal headhunter wearing war paint and dancing around a bonfire at midnight worshipping the moon?

It's important to note also that as Governor, Mike Huckabee has been a very major advocate of "Covenant Marriages," whose goal is to make it extraordinarily difficult for people to get divorces.

and next, he'll have all women dressing "modestly" in black burkas. That and , if allowed outside at all, women will walk ten paces behind their spouses and other male kin, heads down so their eyes don't provoke lustful thoughts in other men, resulting in severe whipping of offensive women, or better, stoning to death.

An Overlooked Point...

I remember when this statement was issued seven years ago, and a lot of people got their undies in a bunch about it. Southern Baptists are only around 5% of the population, and it seemed to me at the time that most of the people with twisted knickers weren't part of that 5%. This means that if you're not a Southern Baptist, it doesn't apply to you!. It does apply to Mike Huckaberry Hound, who accepts it as doctrine, but I'd like to see him try to make this part of public policy. He'd be laughed out of the White House so fast he'd have scorch marks on his butt. Nobody with the title "Reverend", "minister" or "father" will ever get my vote, nor should such a one ever get within arm's length of the presidency.

Oh, yes - another part of that same statement defines marriage as "one man, and one woman, for life". Well, guess which religious denomination has the highest divorce rate in the country? If you answered anything but "Southern Baptists" you'd be wrong. And atheists, as a group, are among those with the lowest divorce rates.

Huckabee will probably be our next president. Why? Not only does he have a charming (ie funny) name, but God (ka-boom!) Himself wants Huckabee to win. Hey, I am not saying that Huck is in it good with Goodness. I am just saying that, IF there is a God, how do we know that He (It) is in any way good? Maybe God has an evil plan to force a 1000 Year Reich on us all of fundie president/dictators. Just sayin'.

Recent surveys indicate that the least likely category of person to be elected to public office is an atheist.

As an atheist running for public office, I see this as a sickening and tragic expose of the public psyche.

I don't care what Huckabee has said in the past 'cause I'm not going to vote for him anyway but I would rather see him get the Republican votes than that piece of walking, racist, adulterist garbage Giuliani.

Anyone who votes for either Romney or Julie Annie is a closet racist.

Every couple's personal dynamic is different and what they decide as a couple is therefore very personal to themselves. I'm sure just to be pragmatic, some couples split the final say on the basis of who has the most experience in the area being decided. To say that only one ie: the husband should have the final say is ridiculous.

It's a good thing Huckabee's not a wrestler; if he were he'd make women submit to his ideals, something not every woman (and some men like msyelf) would not allow to happen. That's control.
Do all Southern Baptists believe in this? We say the same thing about some tenets of Islam. Women are to obey (submit) to most edicts laid down by men.
Women ought to have a say in this, don't you think, Huckabee? What would you do, Huckabee, if you met someone who resisted you? Sorry, you're wrong. Women are major players in the world. Germany is led by a lady and other countries as well.
Anyway, Mike, try listening to women for a change. You could learn something.

How "Submission" works (the over-simplified version)
The Husband is required to be Self Sacrificing like Jesus. He puts her interests above his own. This means swallowing his ego. This means listening to his wife (especially with topics where she knows more than I do, and there are no shortage of those).

I could go on, but Hopefully I've made my point.

That photo makes me almost ashamed to admit that I used to play bass. Low frequency sounds speak directly to the heart. Does he know that? Probably not, but if he does, it's dangerous.

On the other hand, it could be good: if he can woo a lot of megachurch going republicans to split the vote, the 21st century might just recover from its terrible start.

It just so happens that yesterday, as background reading for a paper on an international comparison of childbirth and midwifery, I was reading Barbara Ehrenreich's excellent book, "For Her Own Good", and one of her many quotes is particularly apt. This is from an early 19th century American minister's counsel to new brides:
"Bear always in mind your true situation and have the words of the apostle perpetually engraven on your heaert. Your duty is submission - "Submission and obedience are the lessons of your life and peace and happiness will be your reward." Your husband is, by the laws of God and of man, your superior; do not ever give him cause to remind you of it".
