Fundamentalist Christian Uses Colorado Shootings for Political Gain

People like Tony Perkins may actually develop a sense of morality someday, but I'm betting he'll go to the rapture begging to be forgiven for this.

Tony Perkins takes off on secular media again, this time blaming the secular media for the tragic shootings in Colorado. Nevermind that the shooter was protected all his life from the secular media by being homeschooled in a "very, very religious" household. No, Tony doesn't like the facts much here, he's more after political gain.

First, let me direct you to Daniel DeRito's excellent piece on Matthew Murray, the shooter in the Colorado tragedies last week. Daniel's piece does not explain or excuse the tragedy, and it does not exploit the tragedy either. It is merely an illumination of the mind of Matthew Murray through his own writings. As such, the piece is intriguing and leads us towards, though certainly not all the way there, understanding the mind of this very troubled young man.

Tony Perkins does not have the kind of integrity as does Daniel DeRito. Tony has taken this horrible tragedy of shooting deaths in Colorado churches and run with it for political advantage, blaming secular culture. Yeah, it's the liberals according to Perkins who caused this young man to go over the edge and start shooting. As The Carpetbagger notes, it is disgusting to see this knee-jerk reaction on the part of Tony Perkins, to immediately exploit a tragedy for political gain. It is also not surprising, as The Carpetbagger also mentions:

I'm not sure what's more twisted -- Perkins seeking to exploit a tragedy to advance his religio-political agenda, or his bizarre belief that the "secular media" is responsible for fomenting hostility towards evangelicals.

In both instances, Perkins, a prominent religious right leader, has the story backwards. Murray, who was obviously suffering from severe mental illnesses, wasn't immersed in the "secular media," he was home-schooled in "a deeply religious Christian household."

Also, it's frustrating to see how predictable far-right activists have become. It seems whenever there's a tragedy involving a young person with a gun, right-wing voices step up to blame the American culture.

People like Tony Perkins may actually develop a sense of morality someday, but I'm betting he'll go to the rapture begging to be forgiven for this and many other sins.

Just as an aside, Matthew Murray was homeschooled, and Conwebwatch notes that WorldNetDaily has left that out of their reporting, what seems a clear act of bias -- excising facts when those facts make WND's readers uncomfortable.

and take a look a the xtian response to daniel's post - repulsive again.

i've said it before and i'll say it again:

come on you decent christians. it is YOUR JOB AND YOURS ALONE to right the wrongs done in your name by extremists. until you become louder than the people who hijacked your religion you are complicit, and no better than your sick self-righteous brethren.

Yes it is amazing to me that whenever this happens and we are treated to the spectacle of Relegious Leaders blaming the Secular/Liberal Society we NEVER hear them comment on the idea of how easy it is for these lunatics to GET guns . That would involve CRITICIZING the NRA . Seems rather strange bedfellows : those who believe in Thou Shalt NOT Kill and Those who woship at the alter of the device whose sole purpose is to KILL .

"Secular" media? When I heard the story about Perkins it almost made me laugh, or would have if the overall topic wasn't so depressing. I am waiting for there to be criticism from the Religious Right, as a result of these shootings, aimed at the "terrorist atheists" who would kill Christians (and steal Christmas). I guess the Christian Right can't really spin this incident in the form that Murray was an atheist, since he was raised a full-blown fundie Christian. So they blame the "secular media" instead. Funny.

The most important thing I surmized from reading about this tragedy was the ease with which the perpetrator found a gun.

This poor man was severely abused by his Christian "family." I'm not defending his actions, but it sheds light on the situation much more than the one-sided positioning from mainstream media.

The Secular Media Didn't Cripple this Boy - We Did

I am part of the Christian community that Matthew Murray ended up hating so much, and I can tell you that the secular media had nothing to do with it. The secular media isn't who raised him, it was his Christian family and church.

So many of my fellow Christians have this so twistedly wrong, and they're pushing people away from Christ in droves. And since these are the "Christians" who make good copy, they are the ones you always hear about.

Until Christians, and the people who they look to, learn that the first thing is ALWAYS love - not rules, not judgment or condemnation, not even "winning people over to Christ" - is first, without love as our first and most important directive, things like the Colorado church shootings, warped governments, wars, and bigotry will only increase.

And whose fault will it be? No one but ours.

Anything they won't do for political gain? The scarier part is there are sheep masquerading as people who, despite the facts, will believe him.

Tony Perkins?! Didn't he die of AIDS? I saw some of his early movies. He was kinda cute. From his photo, it looks like he dyed his hair a kind of strawberry blonde. Is he still making movies? I liked him in Psycho, the Hitchcock movie. He was great in that one. He played a kind of serial killer who dresses in drag and makes himself up as an old woman, then kills women who are on the lam and private eyes trying to find them. What on earth is this actor, who appears to have been gay, going out and bashing homosexuals. No kidding, check out his organization's web site. They're just obsessed with homosexuality. Makes you think they're all "projecting" (in the Freudian sense of the word) and that maybe they are the real homos, cause they're finding all those homos under everyone's refrigerator. That Tony Perkins guy must be a real hypocrite. How can he be a homo himself (one biography says he had a long-running affair with Tab Hunter) and participate in such gay bashing? He should be ashamed.

This is classic Rove - applying marketing science tactics to protect your boys. The applicable principle here is, after your guys screw up, and hopefully before word leaks out, immediately, loudly, angrily and with everything you've got, proclaim the exact opposite of what is true, or blame the other side for doing it.

It is called "inoculating" oneself from public perception of a particular event or truth. It is pure Machiavellian tactics and it works - the RepubliThugs have used it almost daily these past few years and the American people, you know the ones who we keep hearing are "smart enough to figure things out", just never figure it out.

peace,
Paul

and state that the finger-pointing is long overdue at every man and woman who while professing their belief in Christianity has allowed their faith to be hijacked by these snake charmers.
Since the topic is about Christians, I'm not going to mention other religions; it's a Christian hijacker making political hay around a tragedy created by Christian intolerance.
So, Christians; when are you personally going to question the credentials of your leaders!?!? You profess one thing, yet you let these characters lead you by the nose, knowing full well that your faith doesn't want you to behave the way that these men and women do!
When are you going to take responsibility for your faith and purge yourselves of these con artists!?

Tony Perkins wants to blame the secular media, and some posters here want to blame Christian religion. Maybe both Perkins and posters should get over it.

Having read the comments this poor young man made it seems that he did have an awful experience. However, it certainly isn't clear that his claims are accurate. Someone with his obvious psychiatric problem doesn't necessarily relate events accurately. We simply don't know what happened in truth.

That said, if he was abused, it wasn't because he was raised in a Pentecostal church. Unfortunately child abuse and sexual abuse are world-wide problems that effect people of all creeds and non-creeds.

(I'm probably responding in part to some comments on Daniel DeRito's blog as well as to one's on AlterNet.)

Tony Perkins is a jerk. He was a jerk before he tried to gain political capital from this tragedy, and he remains one.

Perkins not exploiting this tragedy

I don’t believe that Tony Perkins is exploiting this tragedy whatsoever. I think there were a lot of things that went on to produce this tragedy, but him giving his viewpoint on something he believes is a cause simply is that. And anytime anything happens that can have significance beyond the individuals directly affected, people with strong views, whether religious, political, social or what have you, think of and voice those opinions. It can certainly rise to the level of exploitation, but I can’t see how a very short comment addressed to those who view the world similarly to how he does is exploitation. I don’t believe, from reading the comment, that he doesn’t think there was other causes. What he thinks is a chief factor on the social level, though, is the media in this case.

And, for the record, WorldNetDaily mentioned in a story yesterday that Hawkins was home schooled. I have no problem with them not doing so until then. Previous stories talked more about the events and didn’t go into much detail on anything about Hawkins’ background except, I believe, that he’d been with Youth With a Mission. And WND often links to mainstream news media, and I’d imagine it’s likely they did in this case, so a story with that information might well have been available. And, WND is more of a primary news source for news one otherwise wouldn’t come across in the mainstream. I certainly disagree with quite a few of the opinions there, but I know they’re a credible source nonetheless. When Bush issued the “National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive" in May, WorldNetDaily was apparently the first news site to cover it. After reading WND‘s story, I googled the directive and came up with no news sources reporting on it except
WND and a handful of blogs, none of them high profile.
Alternet’s reporting on it came more than a week later.
