Nobody Can Win the 2008 GOP Presidential Nomination

GottaLaff: So if none of the Repugs can win, will they sneak in a last-minute contender, like, Jeb Bush?

That's right, nobody. There will be no Republican winner. Okay, there will be somehow, but check this out:

* First, Huckabee:

o So the latest polls have Mike Huckabee up an implausible nineteen points in Iowa and four points nationally. But he can't win, right? I mean, he's vulnerable on practically every non-social issue, he has a variety of skeletons in his closet, his policy team seems more or less nonexistent, he still doesn't have any money, and he has most of the GOP establishment united against him. He doesn't have a prayer - or maybe that's all he has.

He goes on to say:

Except, of course, that none of his rivals can win either. If you look at the field, every candidate seems to have near-disqualifying weaknesses (a point Larison has been making for months, I believe), which helps explain why nobody seems capable of getting above 30-35 percent in any national or state-level poll.

* Next, McCain:

o McCain is still poison to a large chunk of the base and probably doesn't have enough money to capitalize even if he wins New Hampshire - and if he loses there, he's cooked.

* And Mitt?

o Mitt Romney is running on a record that would have made him a moderate Democrat in any state except hyper-liberal Massachussetts. [And there are those Mormon and Mitt-flop issues]

* How's about that Rudy?

o Rudy Giuliani is running on a record that would have made him a moderate Democrat in any place except hyper-liberal New York City. [And this stuff]

* Mustn't forget the would-be savior, Fredhorn Leghorn:

o Fred Thompson is more ideologically appropriate, but he's lived down to his lackluster record as a politician by running a remarkably lousy and (perhaps unremarkably) lazy campaign.

* Which leaves Ron Paul:

o Ron Paul is, well, Ron Paul.

Can't say as I agree with those "moderate Democrat" lines.

It's just that ideologically-speaking, none of the Republican contenders make nearly as much sense as candidates for the nomination of the present-day GOP as Obama, Clinton and Edwards do as candidates for the nomination of the present-day Democratic Party.

So if none of the Repugs can win, will they sneak in a last-minute contender, like, you should excuse the expression, Jeb Bush? ::shudder::

Newt says he's up for a veep slot. Would he go for the gold?

Looks like it's desperation time.

First it will be a round or two of late stealth wild possibility candidates, like this story. Then, when the GOP finally realizes they are NOT going to win this one, they start to scramble on how to settle up the VP.

That'll be an interesting power struggle to watch since Huckabee "has most of the GOP establishment united against him". Come on, we have to admit this is funny.

Yes, this article points out what the MSM refuses to say, and what most of us have known for months: that pack of sorry losers fielded by the GOP is the gift that keeps on giving to we Dems! No matter who they run, he won't have a snowball's chance in hell of beating the Democrat. Good times, good times. Let the wretched GOP wallow in the foul muck of what they've allowed BushCo to create. It's about time.

Hasn't that always been the plan? Jeb, the Ruthless, a Bush with his own brain!

I think Alternet should run a full story on the spector of a Jeb Bush Presidency, because I think that has always been George W's and Cheney's plan. George W. will announce "The American people are going to get a new President in 2009 just like they're supposed to. My brother Jeb has graciously agreed to take over the Presidency. Meanwhile Dick Cheney and I will keep doing what we're doing, overseeing the wars in Iraq and Iran." Perhaps if Alternet makes a big splash of this story early, it will keep it from happening.
