Yesterday, The New York Times published an explosive report revealing that in 2005, the CIA destroyed tapes documenting harsh interrogation tactics against two al Qaeda operatives. For the past two years, the administration has hid the destruction of the tapes from the American public. Even when the tapes were still around, officials refused to hand them over to the 9/11 Commission.

Only after the Times informed the CIA that it was publishing its article did the agency finally admit that to destroying these tapes:

The New York Times informed the intelligence agency on Wednesday evening that it was preparing to publish an article about the destruction of the tapes. In his statement to employees on Thursday, General Hayden said that the agency had acted "in line with the law" and that he was informing C.I.A. employees "because the press has learned" about the matter.

Yet no act by the Bush administration is too small to go unrecognized by Time's Joe Klein, who saw it as "more candor":

CIA Director Hayden acknowledges that the public was going to find out about the CIA torture tapes anyway, but he still gets points for coming clean. [...]

[T]his represents yet another case where the intelligence community has released information that hammers the Bush Administration's credibility-and, more important, helps the prospects of the bill that Congress will soon produce mandating that all government agencies conform to the anti-torture provisions of the Army Field Manual.

The intelligence community did not release the information. As Hayden himself admitted, he is talking about the issue only "because the press has learned" about it. The only justification for destroying evidence that the CIA has "released" is a flimsy excuse.

So according to Klein, when the administration reveals any information that makes them look bad, it's "candor." It doesn't matter if the administration is forced to do so or has been trying to cover it up. What Klein is doing is rewarding government deception. It's fine to deceive the public, as long as you eventually fess up to it when the media forces your hand.

UPDATE: Atrios's take on Klein: "My God. Joe Klein now thinks destroying evidence and covering up war crimes is an example of 'candor' and 'coming clean.'"

You might recognize a pattern here... this wasn't even 911 material and they've been caught "destroying evidence".

Gee, I wonder what the Constitution says about government Officials destroying evidence?

... if only that "unidentified" FAA Official who Destroyed the 911 transcripts wasn't covered by this Carte' Bulshit cabal?

...if only Congress would Oversee this!

Only time and leaks will tell!

The destroyed tapes were training films! How many torturers have we trained, anyway?

Again you Libs never fail to disappoint. You guys have to make up your left leaning minds. Do you want to "out" Plame or "destroy" evidence that'll would have blown her identity? Hey folks, it will be grossly irresponsible to keep those tapes. So a few terrorists are coerced, big deal!!! Get a grip we are at war.

Joe Klein's "candor"

Anyone who is surprised that Joe Klein spins destroying evidence of a violation of the Geneva Conventions and the long established U.S.military policy banning torture into "candor" has bought into the "free press" myth. As the legandary I.F. Stone noted, "Freedom of the press belongs to those who own one." It has only gotten worse since the "Iron Triangle" takeover that Ike warned us about in his farewell speech in 1960. Not enough of us took him seriously then, and now it is too late--they won. We need a Plan B, like organizing ourselves around any group that has not been hopelessly compromised already, and then speaking our, marching, writing and calling Congress, and making noise in any way we can. The Fascists hate it when we organize because they know that their power depends on keeping us divided and frightened. They don't want us to remember that they cannot long survive People Power. There's a lot more to that riff, but it's a start, and we need to start ASAP.
