Jerry Falwell Jr. Gets Caught Breaking Federal Tax Law with Huckabee Endorsement

What's a little violation of tax laws for a guy like Jerry Falwell, Jr.? Oh, this isn't anything his father hadn't done in '86 or so. But I'm betting this time Liberty University will not be punished.

I was about to write "life father like son," but Jerry Falwell knew the line he had to skirt to keep his nonprofit status. He walked that line very carefully. Of course, he did so in an era when few politicians wanted to offend the religious right, and during a time when the IRS rarely challenged nonprofit status of any nonprofit for reasons of politicing. But this time there was a warning from the IRS a bare two weeks before Jerry, Jr. decided to back Mike Huckabee, publicly, and on Liberty University stationary. From BBSNews, which calls itself "your true conservative news source:

Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. violated federal tax law by using school resources to endorse Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, Americans United for Separation of Church and State told the Internal Revenue Service today.

In a complaint filed with the federal tax agency, Americans United noted that Falwell hosted the candidate at Liberty University and then sent an email message on Liberty University letterhead endorsing Huckabee.

In a "Liberty News Alert" dated Dec. 1, 2007, Falwell wrote, "Recently, Governor Mike Huckabee called to brief me on the progress of his campaign for the presidency. I invited the Governor to speak to the Liberty University students in Convocation on November 28. He graciously accepted. I was so impressed with the Governor's sincerity and his positions on the issues that are important to conservative Christians that I personally endorsed Governor Huckabee before he left Lynchburg."

Falwell goes on to say, "My father strongly supported Governor Huckabee when no one thought that he had any chance to succeed in the presidential race. I believe with all my heart that, if my father had witnessed Governor Huckabee's surge in the polls and his ascension to first place in the Iowa polls, he would have endorsed Governor Huckabee without hesitation."

The alert was accompanied by an article from a university-run online publication implying that Huckabee is God's candidate.

Americans United sent a letter to IRS officials today, asking them to investigate the matter. The letter notes that on Nov. 19, the IRS issued a press statement reminding charities and churches about the ban on politicking and asks the tax agency to back that up with enforcement in this case.

"Falwell surely knows that these types of political endorsements are illegal," remarked the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United. "Tax-exempt religious institutions may not be used to support or oppose candidates for public office."

Now, will anything really be done about this? Will FoxNews mount a "War on Liberty U" campaign to try to protect Falwell? Will some numbnut in the Administration that doesn't believe in the constitution send a little note to the IRS to make sure no investigation provides evidence of code violations? I'm guessing Falwell and Liberty U. will not be punished at all. They've got too much power in the Republican Party to get caught, even with an act so blatant.

Last time we were told that George W Bush was God's canidate and we see the disasters that has inflicted on this Nation . Quite Frankly we can't afford ANOTHER of that stripe .
There is a reason why there is a separation of Church and State in this country . I might add that I find it odd that God would TALK to the likes of Bush muchless endorse him.
Actually I believe there is a clause in the Constitution that PROHIBITS a relegious test for political office . I do find it troubling that many Evangelical Christians will NOT vote for Romney BECAUSE of his relegion . I can find many reasons not to vote for Mitt but
they have to do with his flip flopping and NOT on his relegion

these wingnut "Christians" want to impose their myths on everyone just as the Imams want Sharia in Muslim countries (and apparently the world). Religion in its many versions has caused more destruction, venom, death and horrendous deeds than any other institutional structure. Religion and the "state" do not mix and never should - Jefferson and the founding fathers knew what they were doing - follow the Constitution.

The Native Americans had settle this land long before the invasion of the christians who have for over 400 years tried to press their religion on all of the inhabitants of this continent. I am not a christian nor do I want to be lead by someone who wears and/or leads based on christian values. Let examine some of those values; racist; intolerance; violent; destructive; bias; etc., etc.. Christian values; they are worse than the Greek and Roman values of ancient history. Lead me based on the constitution and all of it guaranteed protections and I will be okay.

until the Christian Right (wrong) took over. Everything is now upside down. Thou shalt not kill means start wars, shock and awe, kill, kill kill. Take care of the least among us means take care of the very richest. Don't bear false witness means LIE, LIE, LIE about everything (even when you don't need too.) Then there's clean air, no child left behind and on and on...Did we all fall down the rabbit hole?

And this proves that "God" is an idiot and an asshole. But we already knew that.

Falwell and the Moonies

From Wikipedia we get a smidgeon about Falwell's Liberty college being bailed out by Syung Myung Moon, the cultist, Jesus second coming, who owns the Washington Times and best buddies with the Bush family. For the best information see consortiumnews.com the part titled, The Dark Side of Rev. Moon, Buying the Right

"1994 Debt Buy-out
Sun Myung Moon, founder of the Unification Church and owner of the Washington Times, helped to financially stabilize the (Jerry Falwell's Liberty) University through two of his organizations, News World Communications, which provided a $400,000 loan to the University and the Reber-Thomas Christian Heritage Foundation which contributed over $3.5 million toward the school's debt.[30] Liberty University spokesman Mark DeMoss said the school was not aware of News World's connection to Moon when it obtained the loan through a broker. "I'm not going to be pious and tell you we would have turned it down," DeMoss said. "Because it was a business transaction, we probably would have moved forward even if Dr. Falwell or somebody in the organization knew who News World Communications was." [30] Liberty University founder Jerry Falwell stated that the source of the funds does not influence his ministry, Stating: "If the American Atheists Society or Saddam Hussein himself ever sent an unrestricted gift to any of my ministries, be assured I will operate on Billy Sunday's philosophy: The Devil's had it long enough, and quickly cash the check." [31]
Ron Godwin, now Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer at Liberty University, was previously employed under Rev. Moon as Vice President of the Washington Times. [32] In a January 2, 1992 sermon at the World Mission Centerin New York, Rev. Moon stated the following concerning his relationship with Godwin and his connection with Falwell, "Father invited Ron Godwin to join in this great crusade not because he is such a great business man. He is, but more importantly Father is concerned about Jerry Falwell, who represents the great Southern Baptist Christian community. He is not fulfilling his responsibility, so Father would like to see if Ron Godwin can fulfill it. Unless he knows me now, Jerry Falwell is in the position of a foreign person." [33]

This story is just an example of religious doctrine taking a lower priority than politics with the TV preachers. No less than with the Mormon church the IRS has an obligation to tax all the openly politically active 'non-profit' neo-con false churches. 502C3 status of all churches that take political action and make endorsements of legislation and candidates (in violation of IRS rules) need to be revoked on a first offence basis. Absolutely Liberty U should lose its tax exempt status.
