Fox News' Faux Feminist Attacks Women on the Left Over Muhammad Teddy Bear

One of the most super cool things about being a feminist is that you get blamed for pretty much everything. Tammy Bruce's adorable little diatribe on Fox News condemning feminism because neither NOW or the Feminist Majority have issued statements about the teacher in Sudan who was incarcerated for naming a teddy bear Muhammed is a fine example of this toxic genre. According to Ms. Bruce (who refers to herself as an "authentic" feminist, so we assume she goes by Ms.),

"This is how depraved the American left has become. A little Muslim boy in Sudan shows more courage and conviction for a woman under fire than a bunch of women sitting in Washington, D.C., who preen themselves on being the premiere "advocates" for women.

It's been apparent for years that the American feminist establishment is nothing more than a shill for the shallow leftists in the Democrat party, wrapping themselves in the feminist label for convenience. Groups like NOW and Eleanor Smeal's Feminist Majority, also amazingly silent in the past five years about Islamic terrorism and violence against women, use women's issues as nothing more than slogans and chants in their efforts to gain political power."

Actually, numerous feminists around the world have indeed protested this outrage, but that isn't the point. It is not the responsibility of every feminist to protest every little misogynist thing-to suggest so is like asking us to plug the holes in the dam while a tsunami is hitting, not to mention if you want to work in an underfunded field, trust me this is it, we haven't even got close to the necessary resources. But far more importantly, the reality is that it is the responsibility of every person on earth to work to end this violence. (Gee, I could swear we covered this point last week relative to the Saudi gang rape case...)

Ms. Bruce goes on tothrow out this bit of ridiculously inaccurate spew,

"There have also been a few organizations since 2003 that have done astounding authentic feminist work for women and children around the world, and in Afghanistan and Iraq specifically. The American military, without even a passing "thank you" from so-called feminist leaders Smeal or Steinem or Gandy, have liberated over 53 million people in Afghanistan and Iraq, with a good 25 million of those being women and children."

Maybe it is just me, but when children, especially girl children, can't go to school because it is too dangerous, when large numbers of children are malnourished, when women get attacked for walking by themselves or with a man who is not a relative, when women are at risk of honor killings, sexual assault (including by U.S. military personnel), and when women are forced to flee their homes and have no choice but to prostitute themselves to feed their families, what liberation are we talking about??

Ms. Bruce, with what can only be described as truly the epitome of misogynist arrogance, ends her diatribe by presuming to blame feminism for the failure of American foreign policy:

"If the Marines were taking their orders from those so-called feminists ( editor's note: gee, can you tell she understands the concept of feminism), the same women who support and laud Hillary Clinton, those now free people would still be enslaved. The official position of America regarding the suffering of women around the world would be the equivalent of NOW's ubiquitous "no position" position. It is the last appalling betrayal, and one that should condemn them to the dust heap of exposed hypocrites, pretenders and failures."

While Ms. Bruce is trying to convince us that these 2 episodes illustrate the failure of both feminism and the left and justify what she considers the liberation of women in Iraq and Afghanistan, she completely ignores the pandemics of sexual violence that are taking place in Uganda, Sierra Leone, Guatemala and Somalia, all stories that have been covered on Feminist Peace Network website and I might add, without the formidable budget that Fox News has at its disposal.

Feminists must be very, very choosy about what grabs their attention. There's only so much outrage to go 'round.

So, like, situations in which women kill other women? No anger about that kind of thing whatsoever.

Situations in which mothers abuse the hell out of their daughters? Not much anger about that.

But luxury golf clubs that exclude women? Ah, then the anger comes-out. That's a truly important issue.

I get the NOW newsletter and they have plenty to say about how women are (mis)treated in places like Sudan. You're also right that these issues are about human rights and are the concern of everyone who cares about that phenomenon. It's not just the women for the women, men for men. It should be all of us with concern for human rights in every situation.

Both Marshall and Bruce are Dworkinites!

Wow, a civil war amidst followers of Andrea Dworkin?

Tammy Bruce calls herself an 'authentic' feminist because she has identified with the anti-porn, fundamentalist feminism of you-know-who. All Dworkinites consider themselves to be the 'true' feminists, whereas the sex-positive ones are deemed inauthentic.

She's an out lesbian who was once head of Los Angeles NOW. She was expelled because of racist comments she made about African-American men at the time of the OJ Simpson trial. So, of course, she's got an ax to grind against NOW.

In one of her recent books, she said that while she was in NOW, she voted for Ronald Reagan for President but did not appear to inform her NOW chapter of this.

In her embrace of the Right, she joins Dworkinite Laura Lederer (editor, "Take Back the Night"), who works for Bush allegedly combatting sex trafficking, and Dworkin herself, who dined with Christopher Hitchens, Maggie Gallagher and Bush speechwriter David Frum in supporting the Iraq War and denouncing the anti-war movement as apologists for Saddam Hussein.

Lucinda Marshall has written in support of Dworkinite porn-bashing, so she ought to be a bit more forthcoming about the ties she shares with Tammy Bruce. If she's embarrassed about Bruce's 'apostasy', well, too bad.

I didn't know there were any "authentic" leftists in the "Democrat Party."

The Oil Wars are coming.

Whose Issue Is It Anyway?

Why has the Right taken the teddybear issue as their own? If anything, those wanting the teacher punished or even executed are being ultra-conservative. This issue isn't even really a feminist issue, except that the teacher happened to be a woman. I think the feminists and especially the faux-feminists are getting this controversy mixed up with the Saudi rape-victim case, which definitely was about women's rights.

Woman Hating Man Hater

I am trying to figure out what this woman likes besides guns and the ideology of conservatism. She never speaks for woman except when feminist don't take out full pledge ads and or hold major news conferences in support of some injustice against women. I find it funny that she says we have saved all those woman in Iraq when honor killings, rape, and murder of woman in Iraq and Afghanistan have risen since our involvement. I would really like her to go live in either country; not in the comfort of a US base and see how long she lives. I would giver her a week at most. I she wants to kill people or at least her paranoia and lust for guns (which I believe may be tied to a sexual fantasy) leads me to believe she is on the verge of committing murder like Charlie Bronson in one of his classic vigilante movies. It will probably be some innocent victim that who will accuse of trying to rape her. But think about it, I don’t think there or many men around who find her attractive enough to even have consensual sex, let alone forcing her. I think we would all be better off if we ignored her like the rest of the right wing pundits; especially those who pretend to speak for women.

Why is everthing that directly or remotely concerns women become a "feminist" thing. It detracts from whatever the point is and the discussion is steered away from the subject because of the silly need to identify everything as 'feminist'. Most of the time it's not the case. It isn't necessary. I haven't even figured out whose to blame, men or women. I doesnt' matter. Thanks, ANNA

Her job is to shift the blame and energy away from the real culprit; George W. Bush.

That's what you need to be talking about.

Talk about why she wants so badly to shift our energy's away from the real criminals of humanity
