Imus Returns and Dodd, McCain Try to Legitimize Him

Melissa McEwan: Chris Dodd should fire whoever told him that was a good idea, because it really, really wasn't.

Imus is back on the air this morning, after an 8-month vacation. Makes a big bluster about how the Rutgers team realized he "wasn't some vicious racist," and naturally makes no comment about his misogyny. Promises "I will never say anything in my lifetime that will make any of these young women at Rutgers regret or feel foolish that they accepted my apology and forgave me. And no one else will say anything on my program that will make anyone else think that I didn't deserve a second chance."

Two minutes later: "Not much has changed. Dick Cheney is still a war criminal, Hillary Clinton is still Satan and I'm back on the radio!"

For the dim-witted among us, let me explain why that is not equivalent: A valid legal argument can be made that Dick Cheney is a war criminal. There is no valid argument to be made that Hillary is Satan. (No matter how many times Chris Matthews makes it.) And there is a very specific history of (literally) demonizing women by casting them as Satan, "she-devils," or tools of the devil that goes all the way back to Eve. It is meant to suggest the intrinsic evil of womanhood. But I'm sure Imus didn't mean it that way, just like he didn't mean the Rutgers team were prostitutes when he called them hos.

Like every other modern bigot, he just wants to employ the negative associations of terms like "Satan" and "ho," without the literalism--as if it's the literalism that's the problem.

Conferring legitimacy on this racist, misogynist douchebag's return to the airwaves: presidential contenders and Senators John McCain and Chris Dodd.

Chris Dodd should fire whoever told him that was a good idea, because it really, really wasn't.

Actually there is no legal position that Cheney is a war criminal, unless you are a far left looney..

Neither is there a position the Hillary is Satan, although many do think so..but both are just opinions and both are from far left/right nut cases.

Why Imus is even a topic to be discussed is just as crazy.. There HAS to be something else more important than what some nut said about Rutgers Basketball team!

No more articles about Imus please. He's a funny guy, he screwed up and paid his dues. It's getting boring. No one would dare go on for months about Rush. Thanks, ANNA

I don't really see the point of trying a comeback with all the pressure to censor himself.

He probably should have retired years ago and exited with more class. He could have still done special projects, become more involved in his charity stuff, etc.

Inevitably, he's going to commit another faux pas, and political interests will be waiting to knock him down again and capitalize on it--this article being a case in point. Kind of a pathetic way for a career to fizzle out.

The only human more filled with vile racism, moronic judgement, and phony platitudes than Imus is his long time sidekick, Bernard McJerk...and of course Imus brought McSlimeball back with him............However,
Imus' replacement at the hideously unwatchable MSNBC (sans Olbermann) is on balance even worse. The smarmy, smirky, insufferable Joe Scarborough, and his spoiled brat children of wealth: "church lady" Mika, airhead Willy, perky "China Cheerleader" Erin actually provoke a sordid kind of relief Imus is back to bring us some alternative to the deadly boredom of morning media. At least Imus does present two gifts to comic commentary; Rob Bartlett and Larry Kinney and an occassional sublimely talented entertainer such as Martina McBride.

Now I am a monotheist so don't believe in any Satan, but please search U Tube by keying in "Hillary Clinton AIPAC" for her speech advocating nuclear bombing of Iran to make the world safe for Israel. Democrats are insane to contemplate the candidacy of Ms. Clinton, the apologist for the Bush Administration. Look at her perfect Bush agenda voting record; Iraq war authorization votes, Patriot Act (twice), tax cut bills for the rich, Homeland Security Act and others. This woman is a stealth Republican and corporatist. The Republican owned media will proceed to brand all other Democratic contenders as un-electable as they did for their most pro-Wall Street choice, Kerry, in 2004. Hillary needs to be discredited now as the hawk and AIPAC agent she is.

We should be interested why Imus thinks ill of Hillary, rational or not.
